Richard Gilder Graduate School

The AMNH offers a Master of Arts in Teaching in Earth Science and a PhD in Comparative Biology.

On October 23, 2006, the museum launched the Richard Gilder Graduate School, which offers a PhD in Comparative Biology, becoming the first American museum in the United States to award doctoral degrees in its own name. Accredited in 2009, in 2011 the graduate school had 11 students enrolled, who work closely with curators and they have access to the collections. The first seven graduates to complete the program were awarded their degrees on September 30, 2013. The dean of the graduate school is AMNH paleontologist John J. Flynn, and the namesake and major benefactor is Richard Gilder.

The MAT Earth Science Residency program was launched in 2012 to address a critical shortage of qualified science teachers in New York State, particularly in high-needs schools with diverse populations. In 2015, the MAT program officially joined the Richard Gilder Graduate School, with the NYS Board of Regents authorizing the Gilder School to grant the MAT degree. The program has about 16 graduates complete the program each year.

Whitney Memorial Hall Of Oceanic Birds

This particular hall has undergone a complicated history over the years since its founding in 1953. Frank Chapman and Leonard C. Sanford, originally museum volunteers, had gone forward with creation of a hall to feature birds of the Pacific islands. In the years up to its founding, the museum had engaged in various expeditions to Fiji, New Zealand, and the Marianas to collect birds for the exhibit. The hall was designed as a completely immersive collection of dioramas, including a circular display featuring birds-of-paradise. In 1998, The Butterfly Conservatory was installed inside the hall originally as a temporary exhibit, but as the popular demand of the exhibit increased, the Hall of Oceanic Birds has more or less remained closed by the museum.

This Is Our Ellis Island

The first stop on the walking tour, near the corner of Allen and Rivington Streets, a few blocks north of the museum, makes clear that people of African descent were part of New York City from the beginning.

In the 1640s, it was the site of the six-acre farm of Sebastiaen de Britto, one of a group of enslaved Africans who in 1647 successfully petitioned the Dutch East India company for partial freedom and land. His farm was part of a larger area, outside the official boundaries of New Amsterdam, known as Land of the Blacks.

That early Black presence has become better known since 1991, when the remnants of a colonial-era African burial ground were discovered in Lower Manhattan, prompting David Dinkins, the citys first Black mayor, to declare, This is our Ellis Island.

In the archives of the museum, OBrien discovered a letter from a woman named Gina Manuel from 1988, the year of its founding, urging the founders to include the story of Black Lower East Siders.

When you are planning the museum, I beg of you, please, please dont forget them, she wrote. Their spirit walks those halls, and their bones lay in the earth there, and we remember them.

In 2017, the museum opened a second building just up the block, which allowed it to add stories of a Chinese immigrant and a Puerto Rican family, and extend the time line into the 1980s. But researchers also found no clearly documented Black residents, either immigrant or native-born, in that building.

Millstein Hall Of Ocean Life

This multi-level hall was the brainchild of museum president Henry F. Osborn in 1910. He envisioned a large building to hold models and skeletons of whales in the southeast courtyard of the museums land. The hall has undergone several changes and renovations over the decades. It now concentrates on marine conservation, botany and marine biology.

Museum Of The City Of New York

The Museum of the City of New York is a history and art museum in Manhattan, New York City, New York. It was founded by Henry Collins Brown, in 1923 to preserve and present the history of New York City, and its people. It is located at 12201227 Fifth Avenue between East 103rd to 104th Streets, across from Central Park on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, at the northern end of the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

The red brick with marble trim museum was built in 192930 and was designed by Joseph H. Freedlander in the neo-Georgian style, with statues of Alexander Hamilton and DeWitt Clinton by sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman facing Central Park from niches in the facade.

The museum is a private non-profit organization which receives government support as a member of New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group, commonly known as “CIG”s. Its other sources of income are endowments, admission fees, and contributions.

The museum is hosting the “New York At Its Core” permanent exhibition, the first-ever museum presentation of New York City’s full history.

Sanford Hall Of North American Birds

American Museum of Natural History

The Sanford Hall of North American birds is a one-story hall on the third floor, between the Hall of Primates and Akeley Hall’s second level. There are over 20 dioramas depicting birds from across North America in their native habitats. At the far end of the hall are two large murals by ornithologist and artist Louis Agassiz Fuertes. The hall also has display cases devoted to large collections of warblers, owls, and raptors.

Conceived by museum ornithologist Frank Chapman, the Hall is named for Chapman’s friend and amateur ornithologist Leonard C. Sanford, who partially funded the hall and also donated the entirety of his own bird specimen collection to the museum. Construction began on the hall’s dioramas as early as 1902, and the dioramas opened in 1909. They were the first to be exhibited in the museum and are the oldest still on display. The hall was refurbished in 1962.

Although Chapman was not the first to create museum dioramas, he was the first to bring artists into the field with him in the hopes of capturing a specific location at a specific time. In contrast to the dramatic scenes that Akeley created for the African Hall, Chapman wanted his dioramas to evoke a scientific realism, ultimately serving as a historical record of habitats and species facing a high probability of extinction. Each of Chapman’s dioramas depicted a species, their nests, and 4 feet of the surrounding habitat in each direction.

Rose Center For Earth And Space

The Hayden Planetarium, connected to the museum, is now part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space on the north side of the museum. The original Hayden Planetarium was founded in 1933 with a donation by philanthropist Charles Hayden, and it opened in 1935. The AMNH announced the modern Rose Center for Earth and Space in early 1995, and demolition began the same year.

The Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space was completed in 2000 at a cost of $210 million. Designed by James Stewart Polshek, the new building consists of a six-story high glass cube enclosing an 87-foot illuminated sphere that appears to float, although it is actually supported by truss work. Polshek has referred to his work as a “cosmic cathedral”. The sphere is known as the Space Theater.

Founded in 1869, the AMNH Exhibitions Lab has since produced thousands of installations. The department is notable for its integration of new scientific research into immersive art and multimedia presentations. In addition to the famous dioramas at its home museum and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, the lab has also produced international exhibitions and software such as the Digital Universe Atlas.

Biden To Appoint First Native American Treasurer

Native Americans in Massachusetts are calling for a boycott of a popular living history museum featuring Colonial reenactors portraying life in Plymouth, the famous English settlement founded by the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower.

Members of the states Wampanoag community and their supporters say Plimoth Patuxet Museums has not lived up to its promise of creating a bi-cultural museum that equally tells the story of the European and Indigenous peoples that lived there.

They say the Historic Patuxet Homesite, the portion of the mostly outdoor museum focused on traditional Indigenous life, is inadequately small, in need of repairs and staffed by workers who arent from local tribes.

Were saying dont patronize them, dont work over there, said Camille Madison, a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe on Marthas Vineyard, who was among those recently venting their frustrations on social media. We dont want to engage with them until they can find a way to respect Indigenous knowledge and experience.

The concerns come just two years after the museum changed its name from Plimoth Plantation to Plimoth Patuxet as part of a yearlong celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower landing.

At the time, the museum declared the new, more balanced moniker reflected the importance of the Indigenous perspective to the 75-year-old institutions educational mission.
