Extension And Preservation Project

In 2002, after a two-year master planning process, the museum’s board of trustees determined that a new wing was necessary to preserve the historic building and to provide improved spaces for programs that continue Isabella Gardner’s legacy. In 2004, Pritzker Prizewinning architect Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop were selected to design the new wing. In 2009, the final approval for the expansion project was given, but there was much debate about the carriage house. The carriage house, originally built in 1907, was argued to be important for the intent of the first owners, yet the building was torn down in hopes of having the museum preserve the main building. In 2016, the new wing was praised for its appearance by the Boston Society of Architects and awarded a medal for its beauty. The design for the new wing is conceived as a respectful complement to the historic Museum building in scale, form, and materials.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Opens New Wing With Yo

This new wing fully realizes Gardners vision at last. With these words, Anne Hawley, director of the in Boston, helped kick off the January 12 press opening for the new wing, the first of a series of celebratory events that runs through Saturday.

The 70,000-square-foot wing, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, is an addition to the original palace-turned-museum. The new wing, which took three years to build, includes a performance hall, greenhouse, education studio, special exhibition gallery, visitor orientation room, gift shop, and cafe. The series of inaugural eventsdonor receptions on the evenings of January 12, 13, and 14 and the Bank of America-sponsored Community Opening Days Thursday through this Saturdaywere designed to showcase the new wings modernization of the museum as well as its continuity with the look and feel of the original structure.

The most challenging aspect of the planning process was selecting a design that truly complemented the modern aesthetics of the new wing without detracting from the building itself and also seamlessly transitioned into the historic palace and its timeless elegance, said Kim Rzemien, sales manager of venue rentals and events at the Gardner.

Welcome Winter With The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

TheIsabella Stewart Gardner Museumis welcoming winter with open arms on December 20. The theme of this months edition of Third Thursdays is Saturnalia, which pays tribute to how different cultures celebrate the winter solstice.

We had a wonderful time exploring different traditions and trying to imagine which would work best for our growing and young audiences, says Catherine Morris, the new manager of public programs at the Gardner Museum. Truth be told, we uncovered enough fascinating solstice traditions to fill a dozen events like this one.

Responsible for the programming and execution of engaging events at the Gardner, Morris helped brainstorm ideas for creative activities and performances focused on the solstice, which included Unsilent Night from composer Phil Kline.

Unsilent Night is a beautiful community work that celebrates the winter with the participation of the public, says Morris. Audience members are invited to bring their own portable MP3 players. Old school types can even bring boomboxesPhil will provide cassettes! Each audience member downloads and plays his or her own track, and the result is a gorgeous, mobile Soundcloud.

An international success played around the world, this will be the first Boston performance of Unsilent Night. Kline was happy to accept an invitation from the museums Abrams Curator of Music George Steelthe two share experiences at the Miller Theater in New York.

Because We All Know What A Great Book Does For The Beach Season

Going on the hunt for a good book is a sign of the summer season. Vacations, beaches, road trips they all crave page-turners to keep us company as we relax. Through September, book-and art-lovers alike come together at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to view rarely-seen works by renowned, yet very different, book artists.

The museum pays homage to a range of book illustrators through a summer-long set of exhibitions. The major viewing is the whimsical set designs of acclaimed childrens book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, complete with a reading nook and play stage. Drawing the Curtain: Maurice Sendaks Designs for Opera and Ballet explores another side of Sendak, who had a second career as a set and costume designer for opera and ballet. Other exhibits throughout the museum include the gleaming pages of a 500-year-old prayer book by Jean Bourdichon, painter to French kings, displayed in its entirety for the first time. There will also be a new commission, Universes, by picture book artist Oliver Jeffers.

To expand the family experience, the museums popular Open Studios art making has been expanded to take place every Saturday and Sunday over the summer.

Mentor Madonna Muse Seductress

Gardner lived a vibrant and to some extent scandalous, life cultivating relationships that deeply impacted both her and her husband. It remains unclear whether certain friendships with younger men, such as the novelist Francis Marion Crawford or the much younger artist Ralph Curtis, were romantic affairs that flourished and floundered while her husband looked the other way. It is known that Gardner led a very active social life among a diverse network of intellectual, artistic, and religious individuals. Through these relationships and given her considerable wealth, Gardner was not just a devoted friend but a well-regarded mentor and patron, also remembered as a muse, Madonna, and seductress.

While passing through London in 1886 on her way back to Boston after several months of travel abroad with her husband, Gardner commissioned a small portrait by the expatriate American artist James McNeill Whistler. Around this time, the American novelist Henry James, who was part of Gardners social circle, arranged for her to receive a letter of introduction from another expatriate artist, John Singer Sargent. Following the recent scandal surrounding the exhibition of his painting Madame X at the Paris Salon of 1884, Gardner was not only eager to meet Sargent in person but hoped to commission a portrait from him.

Five Great Female Art Patrons In History

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Netflix is streaming the four-part docuseries This Is a Robbery: The Worlds Biggest Art Heist about the notorious event that took place 30 years ago in the middle of the night on St. Patricks Day. 13 priceless works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, located in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston. The case remains unsolved and the whereabouts of over 500 million dollars worth of stolen art is still unknown. The Netflix series gives a detailed explanation of the various trails and theories that authorities and committed experts exhausted in their effort to recover the stolen works of art but no such luck.

Even though the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is the setting for this grim story, it remains in the background. Any art lover would agree that the Netflix retelling of this crime feels incomplete because insufficient airtime is given either to the history of this unique museum or the life of its enigmatic founder, Isabella Stewart Gardner. In the context of This Is a Robbery, the museum is a beautiful distraction. There is an even more interesting story that precedes the robbery it is that of Isabella Stewart Gardner and Fenway Court.
