The Museum Of Broadway Reveals The Show Behind The Show

A few years ago, Tony Award-winning producer Julie Boardman and Diane Nicoletti, who’s created fan experiences for Game of Thrones and Marvel, were chatting at an event. Boardman said that one of her investors asked why there wasn’t a Broadway museum.

“I just stopped in my tracks,” Nicoletti said. “I was like, ‘You’re right. Why isn’t there one? That’s brilliant!’ Like, let’s get on this!”

And so, they did. The pair got in touch with theatrical producers, organizations and theater owners to sponsor the for-profit museum. And after the pandemic hit, they took a lease on a closed Irish pub right off Times Square and filled three floors with exhibits, some interactive.

Now, after years of work, The Museum of Broadway is open, and it’s located just off Times Square and right next to the Lyceum Theater.

“We are a museum. We’re also an attraction,” said Nicoletti. She said, it’s supposed to be fun. “You know, they still see the artifacts and they get a great education. But it’s really something that they’re going to be really excited about, I hope.”

The museum itself has three parts: The Map Room, where there’s a short film that outlines the history of New York theater and a map of where each current theater is located, a Broadway timeline that stretches throughout most of the exhibit, and a special section called the Making of a Broadway Show.

Many of the exhibits have been created by Broadway set designers.

In one room, the corn is “as high as a elephant’s eye.”

Our flagship museum is the Pensacola Museum of History, which is housed in the three-story Mediterranean Revival architecture of the former Pensacola City Hall and was built in 1907. The Pensacola Museum of History, a highlight of the self-guided tour, is a general history museum with galleries dedicated to both permanent and changing exhibits. The first floor houses the Museum Store and ticket desk.

Art & History Museums of Maitland

Florida has been home to thriving indigenous populations well before it received statehood in 1845. In September, A& H will examine these important histories in the Maitland History Museums exhibition, Fumecheliga: A History of the First Peoples of Florida. Fumecheliga is Muscogee , which is one of the languages spoken by the Seminoles, and translates to muskmelon place. In this exhibition, guests will experience Floridas beginnings through the indigenous cultures that inhabited it.

From the indigenous Timucua, who lived among the tropical landscape well before it was known as La Florida, to the unconquered Seminole and Miccosukee who endured through the Seminole War era, this exhibition aims to examine the histories of these indigenous peoples and discuss the truths that history hasnt always acknowledged. The artwork of Black Seminole descendant Johnny Montgomery will also be featured.

Diving Injury: What Every Diver Needs To Know

Sun. December 4th at 2 pm

Understanding how decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism might occur is a key first step in recognizing their symptoms. In this talk, Dr. Charash will review what to look for and what steps must be taken to improve your dive safety. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions.

Dr. Charash is a physician who has cared for the diving community for over 30 years. He is board-certified in emergency medicine and hyperbaric medicine. He lectures locally, nationally and internationally on all aspects of dive medicine, dive safety and dive technology. He volunteers as a researcher with Divers Alert Network, and is currently involved in an ongoing investigation looking at the effects of diving and decompression sickness.

Dr. Charash will be presenting in-person at the Museum, with an option to view on Zoom as well.

An Evolving Community Resource

The Orange County Regional History Center is working to build an even better experience while we continue to recover from the pandemics considerable effects on our resources. Were deep in the exploration stages of fully renovating and updating our current exhibitions and seeking ways to expand the History Center.

Much has changed since the History Center opened more than two decades ago. We are honored by our national awards, Smithsonian Affiliation, and accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, and have spent the past several years researching and growing our collection to better reflect the experience of our entire Central Florida community.

We also continue to offer more diverse programming and special exhibitions on topics we plan to include in our future visitor experience. This work takes thoughtful time and care, and we go forward with dedication to building strong relationships across the community and engaging in meaningful conversations. Diving Injuries Topic Of Talk

Diving Injury: What Every Diver Needs to Know! will be the topic of the next History of Diving Museum lecture, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at Mile Marker 83, bayside, in Islamorada.

Dr. David Charash, physician and diving expert, will discuss decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, among other topics, during a History of Diving Museum lecture.

Dr. David Charash, physician and diving expert, will lead the discussion on hyperbaric medicine. Understanding how decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism might occur is a key first step in recognizing its symptoms. In this talk, Charash will review what things to look for and what steps must be taken to improve dive safety.

Charash is founder of Dive Medicine and Hyperbaric Consultants and host of the Fitness in Diving podcast on Spotify and Apple. He has tended to the diving community for more than 30 years as a board certified physician in emergency medicine and hyperbaric medicine. He is a NOAA dive medicine physician and a certified dive medical fitness examiner. He has received the Divers Alert Network/Rolex Diver of the Year Award for 2022 and is a DAN referral physician and DAN instructor.

The museum will be hosting the presentation on-site with limited seating in the Bauer Diving History Research Library as well as through a private Zoom meeting. Those interested in attending in person should email or call the museum at 305-664-9737.
