Visit The Museum At The Gateway Arch

Vote for St. Louis’ City Museum in USA Today’s ’10Best’

Gateway Arch

Though the ride to the top of the Gateway Arch does cost money, the Museum at the Gateway Arch , located underneath it, is free to visit.

The museum, which reopened in 2018 after a series of extensive renovations, showcases the history and culture of the Native Americans, as well as the colonists who later came to settle in the Midwest, celebrating America’s pioneers and the spirit of exploration that led to the country we know today. Learn about the role St. Louis played in all of this, with exhibits focusing on the city’s colonial past, riverfront era, the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the building of the Gateway Arch.

Do Not Stay Here During A Busy Game Weekend

Do not stay here during a busy game weekend. We arrived at 630pm and had to wait an hour because our room wasn’t clean yet. Others waited longer. Only one set of towels. No one answered housekeeping or front desk phone. People standing in line for towels and hide a bed sheets. Our hide a bed was broken. Reported it at 1030pm when realized it…at midnight after 2 trips to the front desk a rollaway arrived. They slammed the door when they left. Also my laptop was stolen. Heard not to leave anything in your vehicle also don’t leave in your room.Beautiful views.Lots of potential not enough staff. Parking lot was very smelly. Close to many sites. 6 elevator’s ensured you didn’t wait to go up or come down 29 floors. Each day they would take our dirty towels, but not leave clean ones until final day. Pool was super cold first 2 days, then warm 3rd day. Only day there was towels at pool was last day. WI-fi was on off. In all this hotel needs help.

St Louis City Museum: Is It Worth The Cost

The City Museum in St. Louis rendered me speechless. This may be acceptable as an experience, but makes writing a thorough review rather complicated. To break it down in the simplest form: should you find yourself in the St. Louis area, despite the cost, the City Museum is a place not to miss.

My attempt to encapsulate the City Museum

A year ago while our family was on a road trip from Idaho to Tennessee, we passed through the city of St. Louis. We were short on time and had a limited travel budget. We had to decide: do we visit the St. Louis arch or the City Museum? Both our time and budget constraints claimed the arch as the clear winner. We splurged and purchased tickets to ride to the top of the arch. Leaving St. Louis with satisfied awe, we vowed to visit the City Museum should we find ourselves in the area again.

Our moment of truth arrived a month ago. Once again we were back in the Gateway to the West. Equipped with long pants, flashlights, walkie-talkies and an adventurous spirit, we coughed up the seemingly ungodly admission fee for a family of 6 and braced for the onslaught of the unknown.

To say that creativity is king in this multi-story, multi-purpose maze of merriment would be an understatement. Upon entry, we were overwhelmed by the clever usage of recycled decor and thoughtful design. Everywhere you looked, mixed media art covered the walls, ceilings and floor. Everywhere you stepped, adventure awaited in the form of slides, caves and tunnels.

    Unstructured Play For Kids

St. Louis City Museum: Is it worth the cost?

We went here with some friends that had children . This place has architectural artifacts from around the area, but they are weaved into an imaginative hands-on explorative experience for kids — not so much for adults. It is a huge playground, but one where kids get explore their own way. It has many slides , a bus that hangs off the side of the building, huge ball pits, and an aquarium just to name a few. Well worth the cost and time for your child to explore, and adults you’re welcome to experience it too – but be willing to climb, slide, and swing.

Take An Architecture Tour At The St Louis Public Library

For a closer look at one of the best examples of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical architecture in the country, head to the St. Louis Public Library’s Central Library, located in the heart of Downtown St. Louis on Olive St. between 13th and 14th streets. Opened in 1912 and renovated in 2012, the library features a number of artistic designs based on Italian Renaissance styles you’d find in Vatican City, the Pantheon, and Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library.

Visit the welcome desk in the Great Hall for one of the St. Louis Public Library’s free one-hour architectural tours, which are offered Mondays and Saturdays on a walk-in basis and led by volunteer docents. Private groups of 10 or more people should book tours at least 30 days ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

This is a “must do” for families. Consider taking a flash light and knee pads- they aren’t kidding – there is so much to do and see, and you’ll really want to crawl around and climb on everything. It’s a non-traditional museum with the exhibits integrated into physical and entertainment experiences. Get there early, have a plan for hydration and food. Next time, we’ll split our visit into two days. No maps – really.
