Rockefeller College Of Public Affairs And Policy
The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, created in 1981, was named for former U.S. vice president and governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller. It is home to UAlbany’s departments of Political Science and Public Administration and Policy.
While providing educational preparation for academic and public service careers, it undertakes research on public problems and issues, and assists in the continuing professional development of government executives. It offers assistance to the federal and New York State governments, as well as to foreign nations and international organizations, to meet the responsibilities of contemporary citizenship and governance. Such assistance includes special courses and conferences, research and consultation, and publications for the dissemination of information.
The college offers degree programs that range from bachelor’s level study in political science and public policy, to master’s programs in political science, public administration and public policy, to doctorates in political science and public administration. Research centers within the college include the Center for Legislative Development, the Center for Policy Research, the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society, the Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research, and the Center for International Development.
College Of Emergency Preparedness Homeland Security And Cybersecurity
The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity , created in 2015, offers interdisciplinary academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students in fields designed to protect against, respond to, and recover from a growing array of natural and man-made risks and threats in New York State and around the world.
Research will be conducted by CEHC faculty and also through faculty-student collaborations and cross-disciplinary research groups. Training programs will be offered to current homeland security and emergency preparedness professionals.
In 2017, the college participated in the New York Excelsior Challenge, a three-and-a half day training event. The Excelsior Challenge consists of training exercises designed to help first responders improve their response capabilities.
Museum Studies Minor Overview
Hartwick offers one of relatively few undergraduate Museum Studies programs in the country. The program is for students interested in understanding the ways museums are used as intellectual resources, preservers and presenters of the worlds cultures as well as gaining perspectives on how museums reflect positions of power and provide diverse educational opportunities by offering many different modes of learning. In addition, Hartwicks Yager Museum of Art and Culture is not only an outstanding college museum, but also an experiential learning classroom and lab.
Please note: Hartwick College focuses on offering fall, January, and spring term undergraduate courses in person, however circumstances may require us to offer a small number of courses in this department through distance education. In times of emergency, following regulatory guidelines, all classes may temporarily need to be delivered through distance education, including online. We also offer a slate of courses online in the summer to help our students make progress towards their degrees. With support from an academic advisor, students needing particular courses may have other online options as well. Differentiating Visual Arts Administration And Museum Studies Programs
On Tuesday, February 6 at 2pm we spoke with with Bruce J. Altshuler, Director and Professor of Museum Studies at New York University and Sandra Lang, Director and Professor of Visual Arts Administration at Laura Busby, Student in New York Universitys Visual Arts Administration program and Olivia Knauss, student in New York Universitys Museum Studies program.
Bruce Altshuler is Director of the Program in Museum Studies in the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University. He has held positions at the New-York Historical Society, Zabriskie Gallery, Christies Education, and as Director of the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum. He is the author of The Avant-Garde in Exhibition: New Art in the 20th Century, Isamu Noguchi, Salon to Biennial: Exhibitions that Made Art History, 1863-1959, Biennials and Beyond: Exhibitions that Made Art History, 1962-2002, editor of Collecting the New: Museums and Contemporary Art and co-editor of Isamu Noguchi: Essays and Conversations. Altshuler has published extensively and lectured internationally about exhibition and curatorial history, the history of museums, and modern and contemporary art. He has been a member of the graduate faculty of the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, and the Board of Directors of the International Association of Art Critics/United States Section .

A Practical Curriculum Link
The program is structured in a manner that enables you to develop an understanding of the relationship between practical experience and contemporary theory. Museums and galleries are our classrooms: within the University, the Syracuse University Art Museum, the Special Collections Research Center at Syracuse University Libraries, and the Sue & Leon Genet Gallery at Syracuse Universitys Nancy Cantor Warehouse provide professional settings for education and training. Our community collaborators include the Everson Museum of Art, The Erie Canal Museum, and the Seward House Museum, just to name a few. Additional valuable experience is acquired through independent professional internships. We believe that this combination of academic and professional training prepares you for your chosen field and sustains you throughout your career.
An important aspect of the program is the availability of courses in a wide variety of departments and colleges, including the Department of Art and Music Histories and Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences the School of Information Studies the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and VPAs School of Art and Department of Transmedia. A significant number of students pursue concurrent or sequential degrees in such fields as art history, anthropology, arts journalism, and information studies.

Master Of Arts In Museum Studies
The Master of Arts degree requires completion of 32 points, of which at least 24 must be within the Program in Museum Studies. Students must complete five core courses. Three core courses provide an understanding of the historical and theoretical ground of current museum practice, both nationally and internationally, History and Theory of Museums, MSMS-GA 1500 a focused introduction to the creation of exhibitions and the management of collections, Museum Collections and Exhibitions, MSMS-GA 1501 and a comprehensive account of the administrative, strategic, and financial aspects of museum management, Museum Management, MSMS-GA 1502. Students also enroll in the Museum Studies Research Seminar, MSMS-GA 3991 write an M.A. thesis and enroll in Internship, MSMS-GA 3990, a project-based, 200-hour internship in a museum or appropriate cultural institution. Students must successfully complete Internship, MSMS-GA 3990, with a grade of B or better to receive the degree.
In addition to this broad grounding, students take four electives related to their particular interests: at least two courses in museum studies, and, if the student so chooses, one or two courses within a discipline connected to the sort of museum in which the student intends to work . The M.A. program must be completed within five years of admission.

The College of Arts and Sciences, comprising 21 departments, forms the largest academic division at the university.
Departments of the College of Arts and Sciences include Africana Studies, Anthropology, Art and Art History, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Communication, East Asian Studies, Economics, English, Geography and Planning, History, Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino Studies, Mathematics and Statistics, Music and Theatre, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. School Of Criminal Justice
UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice offers programs in criminal justice on the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. The school was founded in 1966, and spurred what came to be called the Albany model for other Ph.D. programs in major universities across the nation and the world.
The school concentrates on crime and societal reactions to crime, including the political, economic and cultural patterns that influence policy choices on the response to crime. A focus of study is the social and personal forces that lead to criminal conduct and the analysis of the organization and operation of crime control systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the interactions among the many agencies which comprise criminal justice systems.

Core to the Museum Studies experience is the opportunity to study in other U.S. cities through extended programmatic trips and courses in New York City and Washington, D.C. where you visit significant museums, galleries, and contemporary artist studios to hear from prominent artists, curators, and gallery owners, many of whom are accomplished Syracuse University alumni. Faculty and staff organize field trips to museums and conferences in New York State and throughout the East Coast, as well as bring professionals to campus to work with students.
Past conferences have included the annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, the Museum Association of New York , and the Alliance of American Museums annual Museum Advocacy Day in Washington, DC where many students volunteer their time to help at the conference, present their research, and participate in a variety of workshops, lectures, and networking events.

Application Requirements For Museum Studies
All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science are required to submit a complete application for admission. A complete application includes the online application, academic transcripts, test scores , letters of recommendation, a résumé or curriculum vitae, a Statement of Academic Purpose, and an application fee. Applicants also have the option of providing a short Personal History essay. Please refer to the Instructions section of the online application. In addition, the department specifically requires the following:
GRE and TOEFL or IELTS: GRE general test recommended. A writing sample is required for those who do not take the GRE general test. Please see instructions below. Either the TOEFL or the IELTS is required of all applicants who are not native English speakers or who do not have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English. Statement of Academic Purpose: In a concisely written statement, please describe your past and present work as it relates to your intended field of study, your educational objectives, and your career goals. In addition, please include your intellectual and professional reasons for choosing your field of study and why your studies/research can best be done at the Graduate School of Arts and Science at NYU. The statement should not exceed two double-spaced pages.

Atmospheric Sciences Research Center
The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center , based at UAlbany, is a center for research in the atmospheric sciences. Established on February 16, 1961, by the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York, its mission is to promote programs in basic and applied sciences, especially as they relate to the atmospheric environment. The center is connected to and shares faculty and resources with the university’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
ASRC performs research to study the physical and chemical nature of the atmosphere and its implications to the environment. Research areas include boundary layers, solar radiation, radiative transfer, atmospheric chemistry, aerosol physics, air quality, solar energy, cloud physics, climate systems, and air quality monitoring. In addition the center has a large “jungle research group” exploring atmosphere and biosphere relationships in the , the Alaskan Tundra, the Canadian Boreal Forest, and the Eastern U.S.
The Climate System Sciences Section of ASRC, started in November 1989, conducts research to understand the Earth’s global and regional climate system and to assess and evaluate the effects of climatic change caused by both human activities and nature.

The mission of the College of Engineering and Applied Science , created in 2005 , is to educate the next generation of engineering and scientific innovators, to lead cutting-edge research of societal significance, and to prepare the students to assume leadership positions in industry, government, academia, and research. Art History With Museum Studies
Art History with Museum Studies is both an academic and professional program that provides students with a scholarly study of art, culture and museums while focusing on the area of professional museum work such as curatorship, education, collections management, museum administration and development. All students will have some experience in both kinds of study.
The art history curriculum will examine stylistic developments along historical time frames and address how art reflects culture, technological innovation and sociopolitical issues. It will teach students methods of analysis and interpretation for understanding works of art and enable them to discover the rich and complex relationships of art to other aspects of culture.
Museum studies courses will explore theoretical issues critical to the rise and role of the museum and its relation to history and culture. The program will also provide courses that help prepare students for internships and entry-level positions in museums, galleries, or other arts organizations.
Additionally, the program will also prepare students for continued academic work at the Masters and Ph.D. levels. Our partnership with the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University, centrally located on campus, is an integral part of the museum studies component, providing opportunities for museum internships and exhibition-based courses.
