Although It Is Now Allowed To Reopen Per The States Pandemic Guidelines Doing So Would Cause The Institution To Incur An Insurmountable Financial Deficit

KGW Vault: Portland Childrens Museum

After nearly 75 years, the Portland Children’s Museum is shutting down permanently.

The museum, which features interactive exhibits aimed at young kids, initially closed last March at the start of the pandemic. Although it is now allowed to reopen, the state’s guidelines regarding reduced attendance and cleaning protocols, coupled with restaffing 48 positions, would cause the institution to incur “an insurmountable financial deficit,” according to a press release.

The Opal School, a 20-year-old private preschool and charter elementary school connected to the museum, will also cease operation.

Founded in 1946, the Portland Children’s Museum is the oldest children’s museum in the Western United States and sixth-oldest in the country. Initially located downtown, it moved to Washington Park in 2001, into the building that formerly housed the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

Running on a funding model largely dependent upon paid admission, the museum sustained significant financial damage during the shutdown, the organization said. The museum’s board considered several options for continuing operation, including a “mobile museum” and an expansion of digital presence, but “these options were not financially viable.”

The organization will officially dissolve on June 30. In the intervening months, staff will look to donate materials to local nonprofits.

Portland Childrens Museum To Close Loss Will Be Felt For Years To Come

A Portland landmark announced it will close at the end of June, citing a loss of revenue brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Portland Childrens Museum and the Opal School a charter academy inside the museum will be shuttered June 30, museum officials announced Thursday.

Officials said in a statement said that the museum experienced devastating attendance and revenue losses from the pandemic and resulting shutdown. Coupled with new cleaning protocols, limited capacity rules and nearly 50 staff positions that needed to be refilled after layoffs, the museums board determined it was not possible to keep the museum running.

Childrens museums across the country are reporting average losses of more than 70% of the income they had received in years past, and relief from public sources has not been adequate to relieve the impacts of the pandemic on cultural institutions, Laura Huerta Migus, the executive director of the Association of Childrens Museums, said in the statement. The closure of a childrens museum is devastating to the social fabric of a community, and the loss of Portland Childrens Museum will be felt for years to come.

Prior to the pandemic, the museum had been averaging about 250,000 visitors per year. It is currently temporarily closed, according to its website.

Portland Museum Of Art Launches Competition To Select Architect For Expansion

The museum announced plans in February to begin raising $85 million toward the project, which is likely to include construction of a six- or seven-story, 60,000-square-foot building on the site of the former Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, as well as some renovations to existing buildings.

“We are excited to invite experts from around the world to internalize the goals of the PMA Blueprint and turn them into physical spaces that bring them to life,” museum director Mark Bessire said in a statement. “This is no easy task, as our communities have made their expectations clear for open and innovative spaces that enable a flexible range of programs, exhibitions, and art.”

The project’s completion is still four years away, but Wednesday’s announcement is a major step. The museum is working with a New York consulting firm, Dovetail Design Strategists, to select an architect. Companies have until July 1 to submit interest. From there, the museum will select up to four firms to develop a concept design for the project, which will be due in November and will be displayed publicly. A winning team will be selected in December.

Museum officials and board members have envisioned a building that, in addition to more than doubling the exhibition space, would be instantly recognizable on the Portland skyline, with a rooftop restaurant and sculpture park.
