An Action Research Project: Philadelphia Museum Of Arts Project With The Philadelphia Schools

Released September 30, 2002

RFA provided the PMA education staff with a series of professional development sessions. The sessions focused on the skills and practices of program assessment and evaluation. The research focused on two Museum programs: an after-school arts club for middle school students and a program that employs a series of arts posters and their curriculum in individual teacher classrooms. Museum staff wanted to learn more about the impact and value of these programs, as well as answer larger questions concerning the role that art plays in the lives of Philadelphia public school students and their families. Museum staff did the bulk of the fieldwork, analysis of data, and writing up of the final report, with RFA staff serving primarily as coaches and consultants.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art was originally chartered in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The main museum building was completed in 1928 on Fairmount, a hill located at the northwest end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at Eakins Oval.

The museum houses more than 240,000 objects, highlighting the creative achievements of the Western world and those of Asia, in more than 200 galleries spanning 2,000 years. The museum’s collections of Egyptian and Roman art, as well as many of its Pre-Columbian works, were relocated to the Penn Museum after an exchange agreement was made whereby the museum houses the university’s collection of Chinese porcelain.Highlights of the Asian collections include paintings and sculpture from China, Japan, and India furniture and decorative arts, including major collections of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ceramics a large and distinguished group of Persian and Turkish carpets and rare and authentic architectural assemblages such as a Chinese palace hall, a Japanese teahouse, and a 16th-century Indian temple hall.

The museum’s American collections, surveying more than three centuries of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, are among the finest in the United States, with outstanding strengths in 18th- and 19th-century Philadelphia furniture and silver, Pennsylvania German art, rural Pennsylvania furniture and ceramics, and the paintings of Thomas Eakins. The museum houses the most important Eakins collection in the world.

Art For The People: A Conversation With Conrad Benner

Curator Kathryn Hiesinger speaks with the StreetsDept.com founder on the power and necessity of public art.

Conrad Benner, founder of the Philly blog Streets Dept, and Mural Arts Philadelphia recently gave the museum a collection of posters from the First 100 Days art project, which Benner created and curated. The project was designed to engage the public around policy issues that could be addressed by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during their first 100 days in office. The gift came to the museum through Collab, a group that supports modern and contemporary design at the museum.

KH: On your blog you write, Why posters? Its simple: messages in the public space can work to influence the discussion. Tell us about the project and its impact so far.

KH: What do you think is the role of public art in community building, and in the life of a city more generally?

KH: What makes Philly such a great city for people who love art, particularly public art?

CB: Well were the public art capital of the US, of course! And unlike some other cities in this country that have created mural districts to attract visitors, Phillys public art is spread through the entire city. Art is for everyone, and I think in Philly we really strive to make that a reality.

Kathryn B. Hiesinger, PhD, is the museums J. Mahlon Buck, Jr. Family Senior Curator of European Decorative Arts after 1700.

All posters on this page are from the First 100 Days Project .
