All visitors are encouraged to book ticket reservations online in advance for general admission and special exhibitions. Tickets may also be purchased at the admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wilsey Court, the de Young museum store, and the de Young café do not require a ticket for entry.

The Hamon Tower Observation Level is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are not required for entry.

Free Admission Day At The De Young Museum San Francisco

The de Young Museum in San Francisco offers a free day once a month. You can visit for free on the first Tuesday of the month. On the free day, you will gain access to their permanent collection of more than 25,000 pieces of art.

For a limited time, they are also offering free admission on the first Saturday of the month for all SF Bay Area residents with a local ID. You must reserve your tickets online and in advance and only applies to the permanent exhibits.

There is a charge on their free day for most of their special exhibits.

Make sure to arrive early as admission is on a first come, first served basis.

The Last Moments Of John Brown By Thomas Hovenden

The Last Moments of John Brown by Thomas Hovenden depicts abolitionist John Brown being taken to his execution in Charles Town, Virginia , in 1859.

Brown believed in and advocated armed insurrection as the only way to overthrow slavery in the United States. Browns actions as an abolitionist and the tactics he used still make him a controversial figure.

He is both memorialized as a heroic martyr and visionary and vilified as a madman and a terrorist. Hovendens heroic image of Brown recalls a Moses type figure.

His vision of freedom for future generations of African Americans was symbolized by the false legend of Brown blessing the slave child.

A few months before the event depicted in this painting, Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia , intending to start a slave liberation movement.

He seized the armory, but seven people were killed, and ten or more were injured. He intended to arm slaves with weapons from the arsenal, but only a small number of local slaves joined his revolt.

Good morning.

Usually, major museums begin planning their exhibitions three to four years ahead of time, Thomas Campbell, director and chief executive of the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, told me on Thursday. They have to figure out loans from other museums and write the catalog of pieces.

The de Young Open an exhibition that ran last year at one of the two institutions Mr. Campbell leads was, however, very unusual.

First, theres the fact that it was a contest, open only to Bay Area artists. Nearly 6,200 artists submitted more than 11,500 artworks for the show, which included 877 works from 762 artists. The pieces could also be sold.

Then, theres the biggest reason the show was singular: It was conceived, assembled and shown essentially entirely during the pandemic, as a way to mark the de Youngs 125th anniversary.

Now, Mr. Campbell said, the exhibition is set to become a triennial event at least one tangible silver lining from a turbulent year.

Looking back, what was remarkable about it was that it really brought the whole museum together, he said. And it really gave us a connection with artists all over the Bay Area.

As One Of The First Major Museums To Reopen In California The De Young Says It Is Ready To Provide Succor To San Franciscans

The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has also announced its planned reopening date.

The de Young Museum in San Francisco will reopen for members on September 22 and to the public on September 25, making it the first major art institution in the city, and one of the first in the state, to do so since US museums abruptly shuttered in March.

We are thrilled that we will soon reopen our doors and resume engagement with our friends and communities, especially when California is still undergoing so many hardships,Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, told Artnet News in an email. Our air-conditioned galleries are ready to provide succor to those who are weary of the smoky skies and bad air caused by the terrible fires across the state.

When it opens its doors, the de Young will offer free general admission and discounted special exhibition tickets through December 2021 to essential workers. Advanced reservations are recommended, but a limited of number of tickets will be available each day at the door.

The city of San Francisco announced on Friday that it was giving museums and galleries the green light to reopen beginning September 21, pending approval of their health and safety plans. The de Young, having already devised its reopening procedures in anticipation of the day it would be able to implement them, was ready to act on these new permissions right away.

Forever De Young Is A Free Open

The de Young Museum has always pushed the boundaries to bring us accessible and exciting fine art pieces. On October 16, they will welcome decorated artist Judy Chicago to present a stunning performance of her site-specific Atmospheres series. Forever de Young will launch enormous multicolored clouds into the sky in front of the museum from a 27-foot-high scaffold, creating a glorious multidimensional effect. According to the museum, the effects are created with non-toxic color pigments that are commonly used in theater and film productions. Itll all go down on Saturday, October 16 at 5:30pm, weather permitting.

Watch the vibrant plumes mix with the wind and sunlight to create a one-of-a-kind performance and constantly-changing color effects. This performance at the de Young recalls artist Judy Chicagos Atmospheres series, which took place around California in the 60s and 70s. The live sculptures are ephemeral, soft clouds that have since been celebrated as feminist responses to the Light and Space movement, which originated in the 60s in Southern California.

Forever de Young is part of the museums exhibition, Judy Chicago: A Retrospective, which celebrates the feminist artist by showcasing about 130 works from her career spanning over 6 decades. See it on display until January 9, 2022.

• Docent Tours are free with admission on Tuesday through Sunday.

Justice By David Gilmour Blythe

Justice by David Gilmour Blythe depicts a policeman, who can be identified by the star badge and baton, leading a group of suspects into a courtroom.

The suspects are carrying their tools of the trade, symbolizing recently arrived immigrants. The suspects are directed to join a musician with a banjo who is already seated on a bench.

The presiding judge is symbolized by the man sitting on the high bench. He is below the scales of justice, which are held by an American eagle.

The poster with the heading Blood Tubs attached to the judges bench refers to members of a street gang and political party that kidnapped and dunked political opponents in slaughterhouse barrels of blood.

The members of the Blood Tubs supported the American Party, which promoted anti-foreign and anti-Catholic prejudice and sought to restrict immigration to the United States.

The poster also has the visible initials SAM, and the word ITALY on it. SAM is an abbreviation for Uncle Sam, which was a nickname for the party, popularly called the Know-Nothing Party.

Parking Near The De Young Museum San Francisco

The de Young Museum San Francisco is in a very busy location next to the California Academy of Sciences. You will find parking a bit difficult if you arrive anytime after around 11 am. I recommend arriving for your visit as early as possible to allow for time to find parking near the museum.

Street Parking: You might get lucky and find some free street parking near the museum. These spots fill up quickly and don’t turn over very often, but you can look here if you want to try and park for free. The best streets are Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Nancy Pelosi Drive. Once you find a spot, make sure to check the restrictions for your spot. Usually parking is only allowed for a couple of hours , but make sure to double check for the area you are parked in as they do ticket frequently.

Parking Garage: You will find one, large parking garage. It’s below ground and is used by those visiting both the de Young and the California Academy of Sciences. You can enter it on Fulton Street at 10th Avenue or on Music Concourse at MLK, Jr. Drive. This is a great place to park, but fills up really early in the day.

The cost to park in this garage varies by day. It’s about $5.25 an hour on the weekdays and $6.25 an hour for weekends.

Note: This parking garage is not owned or operated by the nearby museums, so if you have problems the de Young will not be able to help. You will find signs in the garage with where to call or contact the owners with problems.
