Even if youve never visited the tiny western Massachusetts town of Stockbridge, MA, chances are youve probably sung its name a time or two thanks to James Taylors popular 1970 lullaby Sweet Baby James. The song includes the line The first of December was covered with snow, and so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston, and when I heard him sing it recently in New Hampshire, a great cheer went up from the crowd at the line, as Im sure it does every time he sings for a New England audience.

130 miles west of Boston, in fact, and tucked into the Berkshire hills, Stockbridge represents to many the very best of small-town New England. What began as an Indian mission prospered to a resort town with the most famous Main Street in America thanks to a memorable Norman Rockwell painting. While still maintaining its rural village feel, Stockbridge draws throngs of visitors each year in my case for the chance to eat lunch in one of the nations oldest continuously operating historic inns and tour a museum dedicated to a beloved American artist .

Visiting Stockbridge, MA should always include a stop at the Red Lion Inn.

Theres a fire in the pub, too.

In Italian

Discovering, tasting and living Massachusetts.

In the spectacular and idyllic region of Berkshires, the state of Massachusetts gives the best of itself.

It is incredible even just to imagine that in the western far end, just a few miles from the border with New York and Connecticut, this peculiar mixture between rural landscape and artists has given birth to a sort of American Arcadia.

Here green hills alternate to wooded valleys that turn into so many shades of red during the fall foliage. Along smaller roads, it is so frequent to come across waterfalls, streams, small country roads and picturesque villages nestled in space and time like inside a painting, a novel, or even a dream.

This is just the feeling when you get to Stockbridge, a charming little town in the Berkshires . This town is captured in collective imagination in the paintings of one of Americas best illustrators of the XX century, Norman Rockwell, who lived and worked here for 25 years.

In 1858 retired New York attorney Charles E. Butler purchased 80 acres and began building a year-round home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The estate property held an inspiring view overlooking the Housatonic River, and in 1859 Linwood, one of the first Berkshire “cottages,” was completed. Butler, a member of the prestigious law firm of Butler, Evarts, Southmayd, and Choate, was one of the most highly respected nineteen-century New York lawyers. Linwood House was next door to Butler’s partner’s estate, Southmayd, and from the front door of Linwood, Mr. Butler could look across the valley and see Naumkeag, the “cottage” of his junior partner, Mr. Choate.
