Master Of Arts Program In Museum Studies
The 33-unit, Master of Arts program in Museum Studies is an independent, interdisciplinary professional program housed in the School of Art, a division in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts. The Museum Studies Program builds upon students previous academic studies in museum-related disciplines by emphasizing practical experience, professionalism and important developments in Museum Studies. Museum Studies students include mid-career museum professionals, people from other professional career fields and recent Bachelor of Arts graduates.
Since 1987, the program graduated hundreds of alumni. Many have found employment at all career levels throughout the U.S., from the Getty to the Smithsonian.
Admission To The Program
Students are admitted in the program for fall terms only. To be admitted to classified status, a student must meet all general University requirements. No more than 6 units of work taken in post-baccalaureate status are transferable to M.A. degree credit in the museum studies program.

Applications for admission are due February 1. Domestic applicants may be contacted by the Museum Studies program for interviews only if needed, and, if application files are complete and received by February 1. Local applicants are also required to attend one of the programs regularly scheduled open house dates as part of the admissions process.

Global Museum Partially Funded By The San Francisco State University Foundation’s Mary Macwilliam Fund Opens Its Doors
Faculty, staff and students in the Museum Studies Program spent a year preparing to move the collections, in consultation with independent conservators and preparators who also worked with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. They checked the condition of all materials. They choreographed every literal step analyzing possible roadblocks such as weather, foot traffic, narrow doors and corridors and elevator access.

In Memoriam: Phil Klasky
Alumnus and College of Ethnic Studies faculty member Philip Klasky passed away April 12. He taught in American Indian Studies and Race and Resistance Studies from 2003 to 2020. He served for more than 11 years as the director of the Ethnic Studies Student Resource and Empowerment Center and was also the faculty advisor for Students for Quality Education and the Student Kouncil of Intertribal Nations and was one of the New Leader Scholarships longest-serving mentors. He designed the popular course Race, Activism and Climate Justice.
In 2010, Klasky worked closely with students and tribal organizations to create a multimedia exhibit about the historic American Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island entitled We are Still Here. The exhibit is permanently displayed on Alcatraz. He also served on the Native American student center mural committee.
Klasky received his bachelors degree in Environmental Studies and his masters degree in Geography and Human Environmental Studies from SF State. As a graduate student, he was directly involved in the establishment of the Department of Environmental Studies.
Condolences can be sent to his wife Catherine Powell at or P.O. Box 593, Woodacre, CA 94973. A celebration of life event will take place later this summer.

Under his guidance, I learned valuable skills. Lanier Graham was instrumental in launching me on a long and rewarding career as an art historian, culminating as Associate Curator of European Paintings at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
As a mother of two living in Mumbai, India, this program provided me with an enhanced confidence to critically evaluate heritage sites, art exhibitions, and curated spaces in my own country, as well as opening up opportunities for professional participation in the international art community. I feel that the rewards of this learning experience have impacted my life far beyond the scope of my initial expectations.

The Museum At The Cliffsaturday Oct 23 2021 To Friday April 10 2022
The Global Museum, SF States University museum and teaching lab for the Museum Studies program, has partnered with local Western Neighborhoods Project on a collaborative exhibit, The Museum at the Cliff. This pop-up exhibition showcases art and objects from the historic Sutro Baths, Cliff House and Sutro Heights, as well as works from local artists and kid-friendly interactives. A selection of objects from ancient Egypt collected by Adolph Sutro, now stewarded by the Global Museum on behalf of San Francisco State University, are displayed alongside other pieces from the Western Neighborhoods Project and Golden Gate National Recreation Area collections reunited at the original site of the Sutro Baths Museum of the World for the first time since their removal in 1966.
The museum is free and open to the public: Thursdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., from October 23, 2021, through mid-April, 2022.

Core to the Museum Studies experience is the opportunity to study in other U.S. cities through extended programmatic trips and courses in New York City and Washington, D.C. where you visit significant museums, galleries, and contemporary artist studios to hear from prominent artists, curators, and gallery owners, many of whom are accomplished Syracuse University alumni. Faculty and staff organize field trips to museums and conferences in New York State and throughout the East Coast, as well as bring professionals to campus to work with students.
Past conferences have included the annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, the Museum Association of New York , and the Alliance of American Museums annual Museum Advocacy Day in Washington, DC where many students volunteer their time to help at the conference, present their research, and participate in a variety of workshops, lectures, and networking events.

Museums and galleries are our classrooms: within the University, the Syracuse University Art Museum, the Special Collections Research Center at Syracuse University Libraries, and the Sue & Leon Genet Gallery at Syracuse Universitys Nancy Cantor Warehouse provide professional settings for education and training. Our community collaborators include the Everson Museum of Art, The Erie Canal Museum, and the Seward House Museum, just to name a few. Additional valuable experience is acquired through independent professional internships. We believe that this combination of academic and professional training prepares you for your chosen field and sustains you throughout your career.
An important aspect of the program is the availability of courses in a wide variety of departments and colleges, including the Department of Art and Music Histories and Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences the School of Information Studies the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and VPAs School of Art and Department of Transmedia.
