Admission And Group Tour Options

As with other Smithsonian Institutions on the National Mall, general admission to the NMAAHC is completely free. Guided public tours and docent-led community conversations are available throughout the year. Tour and program options can be found here before your visit. If youre traveling with a school group, the NMAAHC requires that you make a reservation through its website ahead of time.

Keep in mind that most National Mall museums that are open during the ongoing health crisis are only allowing groups of up to 6 visitors, and in-person tours are temporarily suspended. Once the NMAAHC reopens, your group size will likely be limited, youll need timed-entry passes, and youll only have self-guided tour options.

Review The Museum Map Ahead Of Time

The NMAAHC is the newest Smithsonian and in my opinion, the most innovative in terms of architecture communicating meaning. The museums history exhibits start 3 levels underground beginning in the 1400s and then as you move through history you rise up through the levels. The ground level has the Contemplative Court and then the 3 above ground levels focus on the cultural and historical achievements.

We Understand The Importance Ofremembering Our History

Welcome to The Museum of African American History! We are New Englands largest museum dedicated to preserving, conserving and interpreting the contributions of African Americans. In Boston and Nantucket, the Museum has preserved two historic sites and two Black Heritage Trails® that tell the story of organized black communities from the Colonial Period through the 19th century. Exhibits, programs, and education activities at the Museum showcase the powerful stories of black families who worshipped, educated their children, debated the issues of the day, produced great art, organized politically and advanced the cause of freedom.

The Museum of African American History is committed to the truthful telling of American history. Preserving and teaching this history is part of the ongoing fight for social change and justice. The necessary work of sharing these stories gives important context to our present challenges and for a more hopeful future.

Kwanzaa celebrations held nightly at the Charles H. Wright Museum

We visited a few years ago when my daughter was 5 and my son was 2. Back then, I read a picture book of Ruby Bridges story as an entry point to talk about segregation and inequality. We did not go to the History Galleries then.

For this visit, my kids are 8 and 5 and we talked more specifically about why we are visiting this time. We talked about the evils of slavery in broad terms and the history of inequality. I showed them the museums website ahead of time.
