Georgia Museum Of Natural History To Reopen In 2022 With New Exhibit
At the Georgia Museum of Natural History, every day is a bones day.
On Dec. 7, curators Nikki Castleberry and Nicole Pontzer stand in the gallery space of the Georgia Museum of Natural History as they discuss the layout of the room. Glass display cases are open, spotlights are off and animal specimens lie waiting to be put into position. Today, Nikki and Nicole are the only ones in the space, but not for long.
On Jan. 10, 2022, the museum plans to reopen its doors to the public for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to shut down, with an exhibit spotlighting the states many diverse ecosystems called This Place We Call Georgia.
We wanted to represent kind of the vision of what the museum is, which is to keep the natural history of Georgia for the public, Pontzer said. So we decided to create the exhibit around the diversity and the things that make Georgia unique ecologically historically.
Castleberry said the goal of the exhibit is to showcase a little bit of all the collections that the museum has to offer, including botany and archeology specimens.
A lot of people don’t know how broad our museum is, how many different collections are involved, Pontzer said.
The reason why we are as diverse as we are is because we have so many unique eco-regions within Georgia, Castleberry said, If you think of someplace like Tennessee, you know, they’re gonna have the Piedmont, the mountains and that’s it.

The Georgia Museum of Natural History is the U.S. state of Georgia‘s museum of natural history located in Athens, Georgia. The museum has eleven different collections in Anthropology, Arthropods, Botany, Geology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate, Mammalogy, Mycology, Ornithology, and Zooarchaeology. In addition, there are exhibitions, archives, and entertainment for children. The Exhibit Gallery is free and open to the public during scheduled hours. People can schedule a tour to visit the collections by appointment.
The museum staff deliver on thousands of information and loan requests annually. Most of these originate within Georgia from agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Forestry Service, Cooperative Extension Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Georgia Department of Transportation, as well as from private organizations and the general public.
The GMNH provides natural history education opportunities to the public and its surrounding communities in addition to assisting in research endeavors. The museum also has an Internship Program that provides University of Georgia undergraduates with hands-on collections experience.

The Georgia Museum of Natural History is an important center of natural history research.
For almost a century, the University of Georgia has been a center of research in natural history related to the state, the region, and the world. To a large extent the quality of this research is based upon the information and knowledge associated with the 11 collections affiliated with the Georgia Museum of Natural History. These collections represent research conducted in dozens of fields of study. They are crucial for graduate research and training programs in their respective academic departments. Each year the personnel associated with these collections generate approximately 100 scientific publications and average over $1,500,000 in contracts and grants. The collections themselves represent voucher specimens for the research and the data associated with each of the collections contains an important base for future research.
The Museum gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm. We are closed on weekends and University holidays. For questions call our front office 706-542-1663.

William P Wall Museum Of Natural History
The Georgia College William P. Wall Museum of Natural History is an academic and research treasure for students, faculty, staff and the public in the southeastern United States. The 2,500-square-foot museum is dedicated to earth sciences, emphasizing paleontology the study of fossils and ancient life forms.The museum opened in 2004 and is an official repository for National Park Service specimens. It’s also home to a full-dome planetarium featuring state-of-the-art graphic projection. Built in 2008, the Planetarium provides educational programs and shows about astronomy and the night sky.

The exhibit gallery is open to everyone, but probably more suitable for groups with children over 5 years old. Tour group size is limited, so for large groups , please call .
The Natural history Building is located on the University of Georgia Campus at the corner of East Campus Road and Cedar Street . The Gallery is free to the public and typically open from 10am-4pm on Mon-Fri. The Museum is closed on weekends and University Holidays.
