Update: This story has been updated to clarify that the funding numbers cited refer to the DMA’s original 1984 building and not its 1993 expansion.

The Dallas Museum of Art is in the early stages of drafting a plan for a major expansion.

Questions remain about the scope, location and architect of what will be built. As do, notably, questions about cost.

Nobody knows what the expansion will entail just yet The strategic plan will guide what well do in the future, says museum director Agustín Arteaga but past efforts at the DMA and comparable projects elsewhere give an idea of what to expect.

    How To Pay For It

For the DMAs original building in 1984, funding came from a variety of sources.

Private donors forked over $20 million. The city supplemented that with $24.8 in city bond funding. The museum expanded in 1993.

Complicating the financial picture in 2022 are the museums attendance numbers. COVID-19 cut its visitors in half. Before the pandemic, annual attendance was over 900,000, says Arteaga. This year, the museum expects to see 450,000 visitors.

The News Mark Lamster also warns of a potential burden on taxpayers: The danger is that the museum board, driven by its patrons, saddles taxpayers with debt and increased financial obligations to support their own, tax-deductible gifts.
