Looking At Light In The Kimbell Art Museum

Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas – Unravel Travel TV

The one building I can write about without having visited it in person is the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. My appreciation of the building its aesthetics, its proportions and above all its emanating light has only grown with time.

The Kimbell Art Museum is a creation by Louis Kahn, located in Texas. I first encountered it when I analysed the daylight it captures and transforms, as part of a course at University. To give a bit of context, I will quote the words of Wendy Lesser describing both the daylight experienced in Texas as well as its composition within the museum.

Somehow the harsh Texas sunlight which prevails outdoors has been converted into a cool, silver-tinted beam that bathes the concrete and the paintings and the people who stand in front of them, making everything seem as if it exactly belongs here. Wendy Lesser in You Say to Brick: The Life of Louis Kahn

The effect of bringing daylight from the outside and changing the nature of its perception is the power of architecture, perhaps best embodied in the works of Kahn who wrote on the subject:

The sun never knew how great it was until it hit the side of a building.

My Visit To Kimbell Art Museum Fort Worth Texas

Art Historian, Architect, Curator and Art Journalist

Kimbell Art Museum has long been on my destinations-to-visit list, and it is indeed an alluring destination for any architect and/or scholar of modern architecture. I had the privilege of both visiting the Museum in Fort Worth, Texas on October 19, 2021, and seeing the Turners Modern World exhibition. The latter is an impressive collection of Joseph Mallord William Turners paintings, an 18th19th century British painter, and one of my favorite British painters of all time. Needless to say, the timing couldnt be more right.

I got off the bus right across from an open green pasture, surrounded by elm and red oak trees and reflecting pools. The promenade beneath the trees leads straight to Louis Kahns iconic structure, and not 60 meters to the West of it lies Renzo Pianos impressive pavilion. Pianos Pavilion was a challenging project to take on, some 40+ years after Kahns masterpiece . In fact, Piano neither wanted his structure to be ignored, nor for it to overpower the original museum building, as he so directly states in his infamous quote, Close enough for a conversation, not too close and not too far away. Pianos building is of glass, concrete and wood, and is simple and elegant in its structural modulation.
