Listen To The Grandstands At Night

Like the sunrise or sunset, there is another experience you could enjoy at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs that not many get. A walk through the Speedway grounds in quiet, you’ll hear the cavorting of the ghosts of the Speedway. Ok, so maybe it’s just the massive tons of metal that make up the nearly 250,000 permanent seats cooling on a midwestern fall evening but, in the dark, youll wonder which it really is.

The Museums Most Esteemed Group Of Supporters

Our most generous supporters are invited to join the esteemed Borg-Warner Society. Donors at this level provide essential unrestricted dollars that allow the Museum to expand and enhance our collections care, exhibits, and programs. Members of the Borg-Warner Society are our partners, helping the Museum tell stories of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for generations to come. We appreciate their shared vision to move the Museum to the next level and in recognition of their commitment to further our mission, we are pleased to offer additional benefits to all Borg-Warner Society members:

  • A private tour of the The Basement
  • Preferred seating at member-only events
  • Special invitations to Borg-Warner Society members-only events

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is an automotive museum on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, United States, which houses the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame. It is intrinsically linked to the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400, but it also includes exhibits reflecting other forms of motorsports, passenger cars, and general automotive history. In 2006, it celebrated its 50th anniversary. The museum foundation possesses several former Indianapolis 500-winning cars, and they are regularly rotated onto the display floor exhibits.

The museum is independently owned and operated by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 organization. The museum dates back to 1956, and moved to the current building in 1976. It is located in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway race course, and is open year-round, except on certain holidays including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall Of Fame

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, formerly known as the Auto Racing Hall of Fame, dates back to 1952. It was established and supported by the American Automobile Association and Ford Foundation. It was originally the brainchild of Tony Hulman who had expressed interest in starting a racing hall of fame shortly after he purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1946. As of 2021, there have been 159 inductees enshrined into the hall.

AAA dropped out of racing entirely in 1955. After being established for only three years, and after only a handful of historical, “veterans committee” inductees, the hall of fame went dormant. A year later, the first Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum opened its doors. In 1961, Hulman acquired and revived the hall of fame, and incorporated it into the Speedway museum’s organization.

Voting is held annually and inductees are typically announced in the spring, sometimes on or around Founders Day , the date on which the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was incorporated in 1909. The new members are formally inducted in May, a few days before the Indianapolis 500 race, during a special ceremony. There is no set number of inductees for each year, and the number varies annually.

The 2020 hall of fame class consisted of and Dale Earnhardt Sr. However, the 2020 induction ceremony was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guthrie and Earnhardt were honored alongside the 2021 class of Michael Schumacher and Paul Page.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum With Kids

Indy 500: AJ Foyt Indy Museum Exhibit Pt 2

While the IMS Museum will be a big appeal to adults who are racing fans, theyve made quite a few improvements since our first visit 8 years ago. Now there are activities to get kids excited about touring the museum. When you enter the museum, head through the first set of doors in to the main area and grab a seek and find. This photo book will get kids moving and looking for the items shown in the photographs. For older kids, theres an extensive scavenger hunt with a lot of questions to find answers for.

Theres a short film to watch about the history of Indycar. My three and five year old had a hard time enjoying it but my seven and nine year old were fine.

More Month To See 8th Wonder Of The World

November 2nd marks the final day to visit the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. I mention this only because it’s a unique exhibit that entertains and educates adults and children. And this is the only location of the exhibit in North America for 2014. This is definitely worth the price of admission alone, not to mention all the other exhibits included in one ticket price. Oh, and remember to check out their Take Me There, China exhibit as well. This is a stop on our tour route however, a few minutes is definitely just enough to tantalize you into coming back to spend a few hours, or even a day or more, discovering all that’s available inside the largest children’s museum in the world. Just sayin’.

Stroll Through Gasoline Alley

Gasoline Alley is the name given to the main garage area of the Speedway, and it’s where IndyCar, NASCAR and for the Runoffs many SCCA teams will spend their events, prepping their cars for hopeful moments of glory.

The name came about in the 1920s and, like the track, Gasoline Alley has had its share of history. It started as wooden garages with thick wooden doors. Much of it was rebuilt after a 1941 race-morning fire, and in 1986 the ultra-modern steel-and-concrete versions you’ll see today were opened.

Watch A Sunrise Or Sunset From Inside The Track

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Gift Shop / Indy 500 ...

The gates for the Indy 500 open at 6 am , so only a few of the earliest fans and those who work at the Speedway get a chance to see a sunrise at the famous track. If youre on the driver/crew list for the Runoffs, this opportunity can also be yours and it’s one not many can claim.

Not an early riser? We have good news. While most fans are long gone by the time the sun sets on race day you can hang around a little longer and watch a sunset at the Speedway.

Shopping At The Indianapolis Motor Speedway

I must be falling into a rut of posting on getting everyone to spend money while at the track. First the Bronze/Silver Badges, now lets hit the gift shops! My favorite place to spend money is at the IMS Museum Gift Shop. It spans across the entrance of the buildingone side has mostly mens wear and the other side has mostly womens and kids wear. The satellite gift shops at the track are getting a lot of merchandise that the IMS Museum Gift shop has, but generally I need something to do while George and his brothers discuss the cars in minute detail that are in the museum.

The gift shops did capitalize on the fact that Danica is back for one last IndyCar race. Shes always been well-represented with merchandise in the gift shop. This year you can buy a plaque with mini replicas of tickets of all of the Indianapolis 500s that she participated in and two commemorative coins. It is an autographed limited edition of 500. There are also lanyards, decals, and keyrings bearing the distinctive Go Daddy Green.

The die-cast cars have begun coming in with the new body style. Once again, it will be time to get another Tony Kanaan carthey had them as of qualifying weekend, but I think I will wait until Road America to have it autographedthe autograph lines are pretty long during the Indy 500 weekend. There are several grades of die-cast carssome that are highly collectible and are priced accordingly to the small Hot Wheels replicas.

Happy Shopping!
