Founded in 1970, the Science Museum of Virginia has become the premier hub for hands-on education in Virginia. This public museum, which is housed in the concourse of a historic train station in the state capital, hosts more than 300,000 visitors each year. It is an important tool in the States effort to promote science, technology, engineering, and math education to 8- to 14-year-olds. In 2013, the Museum launched a campaign to reinvent itself with building updates and more than 50 new exhibits including its ground-breaking Speed exhibition, inviting visitors to the intersection of motion and time across a world of science and technology applications. Speed features a 170-foot SR-71 Blackbird supersonic jet suspended from the ceiling, which posed a host of challenges for the design and engineering teams.

There is so much at this museum from hands on exhibits to exploring the universe to just having fun while learning. The Science Museum of Virginia has something for everyone. It is a place that will truly enlighten all five of your senses.

Now some of you are saying, This is amazing. I have never heard of the Science Museum of Virginia before. It does sound like a great place. However, there are science museums everywhere, and all of them enlighten the senses. Besides, I am more into railroads and not science. Therefore, it makes absolutely no sense to visit this place.

What is so special about the Science Museum of Virginia? It is a museum about science. It is an interactive museum. It has many great exhibits about science. What is so special about this museum?

The Science Museum of Virginia focuses on science just like any other science museum. However, this place was not always the Science Museum of Virginia. Before it was the Science Museum of Virginia, it was the Broad Street Station. What makes this museum special is that it is housed in what was once a train station.

Although the Science Museum of Virginia is focused on, of course, science, this place has never forgotten its roots as a train station.

The Science Museum of Virginia required a new freestanding, approximately 156,276 GSF parking structure to provide approximately 400 spaces, as replacement for the majority of the sites surface parking.

The new four level precast structure is located between the SMV Main Building and Childrens Museum of Richmond . Exterior precast panels recall the limestone material and classical proportion of the SMV.

Not only will the new deck increase parking capacity, be user friendly and create a safer parking experience for guests, but the deck is a means to an exciting end for the Museum to create a new urban green space. Richard Conti, Science Museum of Virginia Chief Wonder Officer

SBBCC is proud to have added to the cohesive design of the entire property with an aesthetically pleasing, space efficient parking facility which allows a continuous traffic flow between Broad Street and Terminal Place.

The project was constructed without cessation of SMV or CMOR operations construction phasing and laydown area were decided through cooperative effort with SMV.

Science Museum Of Virginia Renovations

Science Museum of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia

Size25,300 square feet

The Science Museum of Virginia was a rail station until the Commonwealth of Virginia purchased it to be the Science Museum of Virginia in 1977. Several additions and renovations occurred throughout the ensuing years. The most recent is a 9,300 square foot renovation to the Main Concourse Gallery and a new, 16,000 square foot special events center.

Renovations to the 1919 building made space for a Lockheed Blackbird SR-71 supersonic jet airplane for the museums Speed exhibit. The Cold War era spy plane had been on display outside at the Virginia Aviation Museum at the Richmond International Airport. The construction team renovated the main concourse, coordinated the disassembly and transport of the plane from the airport, and reinstalled the plane within the refurbished space all while the building remained open to the public. The team turned the construction process into an exhibit, allowing visitors to view the plane as it went into the space.

Science Museum Of Virginia To Feature New Dinosaur Exhibit

RICHMOND, Va. — The Tyrannosaurus Rex and some of his family members are on display at the Science Museum of Virginia, in Tyrannosaurus: Meet the Family just in time for Fathers Day weekend.

“It is an amazing exhibit, not just about the most popular Tyrannosaurus Rex, thats the one everybody knows, but its about Tyrannosaurus Rex and all of his relatives. There are a lot of relatives of tyrannosaurus, from chicken-sized animals to the one thats 40 feet long,” says Timshel Purdum, who is known as the Dinosaur Expert.

Purdum is called the dinosaur expert and she says whether youre two or 102, youll be surprised and blown away by the exhibit.

“Its hard not to have a wow factor when you can walk into an exhibition and see skeletons the size of a school bus. Youre going to be amazed. Theres a specimen of a dinosaur called Scotty and its just huge,” Purdum said.

The exhibit is interactive, so theres a lot to take away from it.

“There are over 30 different types of Tyrannosaur and we only think about the one. There are over 1,000 types of dinosaurs in general, so I think another really good idea the diversity of these animals. Oh, and theyre not, extinct birds are dinosaurs. Youll get that from the exhibit too,” Purdum said.

“Tyrannosaurus: Meet the Family” opens on Saturday at the Science Museum of Virginia. Visit the museums website for more information.
