Misin San Francisco De Ass

Dating back to 1776, this cute little church sits in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District and is considered the oldest building in the entire city. It is the only surviving chapel, although a total of 21 such chapels were built by Spanish Catholics in California between 1769 and 1823. The History Of The De Young Museum

The original de Young Museum opened to the community in 1921, which served as part of the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. Named after the early San Francisco newspaper personality, M. H. de Young, this enlightening attraction is almost always called by the shortened de Young reference. To accommodate a growing art collection and repair damage sustained after the Loma Prieta earthquake, the fine arts museum underwent a rebuilding phase, where it reopened to the public in 2005.

One of the most significant changes that set the old de Young Museum aside from the new version not only includes the size of the building, but also offers the environmentally conscious concept of giving back more green to the surrounding environment.

The old de Young Museum measured 140,000 square feet, while the newer building showcases 292,000 square feet. Although the new de Young displays a larger gallery area and a taller tower, a decrease of the overall building footprint took place, creating 88,00 square feet of green space that was returned to the park.

Original elements of the historic de Young building also still remain, including the Pool of Enchantment, sphinx sculptures, and the initial palm trees planted about the landscape. Original ferns, redwood and sandstone still survive. Inside, an expansion of building features and visitor amenities offer an open and engaging space perfect for productive sessions of creative exploration.

National Aids Memorial Grove

In the decades following the first reports of AIDS in the United States in 1981, Americans were overwhelmed with the devastation of the AIDS epidemic. In 1988 a few San Francisco residents belonging to communities hit hard by the AIDS epidemic envisioned a place of remembrance for those who had lost their lives to AIDS. They imagined a serene AIDS memorial where people could go to heal. Renovation for the National Aids Memorial Grove began in September 1991 and continues today as communities are constantly working to improve it. Located at 856 Stanyan Street, in the eastern portion of Golden Gate Park, the Grove stretches across seven acres of land. In 1996, due to Nancy Pelosi’s efforts, the “National AIDS Memorial Grove Act” was passed by Congress and the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, which officially made those seven acres of Golden Gate Park the first AIDS memorial in the United States. Then in 1999, it earned the Rudy Bruner Silver Medal Award for excellence in the urban environment.

On November 30 an annual Light in the Grove fundraising gala is held in the Grove. This event, held on the eve of Worlds Aids Day, sells out each year and was voted “Best Bay Area LGBT Fundraiser” by Bay Area Reporter readers in 2015.

S And 1980s: Construction And Reorganization

In the 1950s and 1960s, the regional BART system was conceived as a much more extensive system than was eventually built, with plans for express trains through San Francisco and local service within San Francisco. Because it was assumed BART would provide local rail service, investment in Muni infrastructure failed to keep pace with major urban redevelopment projects. For example, BART was intended to provide Richmond district and Western Addition service as part of its Golden Gate Bridge/Marin line. This leaves a legacy of the inadequate 38-Geary bus serving these neighborhoods.

Construction on BART’s Market street tunnel started in 1967, with two decks tracks the upper intended to provide local service. Major cost overruns in the BART project forced the state legislature to rescue the project in 1969: curtailing local service in San Francisco and converting the partially constructed stations into the basis of a new subway called the to connect the downtown stations to the Twin Peaks Tunnel and continuing along reserved tracks to St. Francis Circle. Construction on the metro began in 1970, but the project suffered from further cuts and design changes throughout the 1970s. The finally opened in February 1980, for one line , with other lines following later in 1980, but the many design compromises and piecemeal planning led to long-term operational challenges and inefficiencies.

In 1970, Muni also suffered a severe diesel bus crisis.

It was an eclectic crowd that seemed more akin to a music festival than museum event. There were cross-generations of fans decked in rainbows and gold lamé wings, others in T-shirts emblazoned with the work of the groundbreaking feminist artist Judy Chicago.

But it was no concert. The estimated 8,000 people gathered in the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, Oct. 16, were there for a free, site-specific performance of Chicagos latest Atmospheres air sculpture, Forever de Young. The event, executed in conjunction with Chicagos first retrospective, currently on view at the de Young Museum, was a work that elicited very strong reactions from both viewers and neighbors.

Ive been counting down today as long as Ive known about it, said San Francisco resident Mariana Schiffner, who arrived at the park 2½ hours before the 5:30 p.m. start time so she and her 11-year-old daughter, Jackie, could have the best view of the display. I wanted to make sure my daughter was here today because Judy has been fighting for womens rights and social justice. I think shes the most important female role model for a child in a generation.

The 15-minute event, live-streamed on the Fine Arts Museums of San Franciscos YouTube channel, included fireworks, pyrotechnics, sparklers and canisters of colored pigment being released into the air to form clouds of colored smoke that drifted from the pyramid-shaped scaffold structure erected in front of the museum.

Exploring The De Young Museum

Before entering the de Young Museum, there are two main access points to consider. The first comes in the form of the Music Concourse Garage, which holds 400 cars. For the low price of $5 per hour during the week and $6 per hour on the weekends, guests may cross into the museum through a simple tunnel walk from Fulton Street and 10th Avenue. Special event parking after 5:30 p.m. costs a flat rate of $17.

When choosing to park somewhere else, a rather large inviting entrance is situated on Tea Garden Drive. Additional parking is found at the UCSF Medical Center Garage for the cost of $3 per hour, with a maximum fee of $24.
