Museum Of Science And Industry Chicago’s Five

CHICAGO, May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago is unveiling a new, state-of-the-art projection system in its five-story, wrap-around Giant Dome Theater. MSI’s Giant Dome Theater–renamed from the Omnimax® Theater to reflect the change in technology–is the first in Chicago to implement this projection system, and only the second in the world.

This new system–D3D/Christie Laser Dome, an Evanston-based company–uses three different laser projectors that stitch together images, offering a brighter, clearer and more colorful picture. The system also allows for greater content flexibility inside the dome.

To celebrate the new system, MSI is offering reduced pricing throughout June and is debuting Amazon Adventure, a new film that depicts the 11-year journey of Henry Walter Bates through the Amazon rainforest in the 1800s. Also showing is Dream Big, which reveals the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels around the world.

The Museum of Science and Industry is a science museum located in Chicago, Illinois, in Jackson Park, in the Hyde Park neighborhood between Lake Michigan and The University of Chicago. It is housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Initially endowed by , the Sears, Roebuck and Company president and philanthropist, it was supported by the Commercial Club of Chicago and opened in 1933 during the Century of Progress Exposition.

Set in Yesterdays Main Street area, this old fashioned soda shop is a really fun place to grab an ice cream for a much-needed break. Its also a great place to bribe the kids for good behavior at the museum. Not that I would ever do such a thing. LOL

Christmas Around The World And Holidays Of Lights

Every year the Science and Industry displays over 50 Holiday Trees from around the world plus one huge 4 story tree. Each tree represents a different country and has ornaments and decorations to reflect the countries traditions.

Its both amazing to see and educational at the same time. Both children and adults will enjoy strolling through all the decorations before visiting the other science exhibits.

On weekends they also have holiday performances to entertain guests.

In 2020 this event starts on November 13th and runs Through January 3, 2021.

How Much Is Parking At Museum Of Science And Industry

There is an underground parking structure attached to the Museum of Science and Industry entrance at the northwest corner of East 57th Street and South Cornell Avenue. Parking is $22 for non-members and individual members, $14 for people with a dual membership, and free for family memberships.

Pro tip: Have your membership card ready when you enter the garage. You have to scan it.

Note: The parking charges are per car. One family cannot arrive in two cars and park both for free.

Note: The garage closes at 7:00 p.m. It may seem like a smart idea to visit other parts of Chicago after the museum with your car in the free lot. It wont work.

This Chicago science museum coal mine exhibit takes you underground to an actual coal mine that was relocated to the museum from southern Illinois. It teaches you about the work they do, which will in turn make you grateful that you dont have to do it.

Note: This exhibit is currently closed due to COVID-19. It comes with an extra charge when it is open.

Museum of Science and Industry Flight Simulators

If you want to feel nauseous, there are motion simulators. You can board an aircraft or spaceship for your ride to Vomit City. You must be less than 245 pounds and at least 48 tall to ride the airplane. The spaceship is more family friendly, with the only requirement being that you must be at least 42 tall to ride without an adult.

Cost: The airplane costs $16 for two people and the spaceship costs $6 per person.

Pro tip: Buy ONE ticket for two people for the airplane.

Bonus pro tip: The museum features a Halloween ride during its Halloween celebration.

Future Energy Chicago

This is a forty five minute experience that allows guests to take a nap work in a simulation lab to learn about energy and build greener homes. There is also an Energy Garden in which to transform energy by doing things like riding a bike.

We visited to see the Superdogs video on the imax. We were very pleased with the safety measures in place, from spaced seating to row dismissal at the end of the film. 10/10.

Museum is safe place to visit Great time for a family Many exhibits are open

True gem of Chicago. Beautiful, wonderful place with interesting things to do and learn around every corner. Worth multiple trips.

The museum is large and engaging. Lots to see and do. Unfortunately, our visit landed in the middle of Covid No-Mans land, so nearly all of the interactive exhibits were inoperable. But there was still plenty to see and learn. I was really hoping to tour the WWII German submarine, but the best that we could manage was a peek inside. Still dont know how they managed to get that thing in through the front doors. Huge.

At 30 meters in diameter, the Omnitheater at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St.Paul, USA, is clearly one of the biggest dome theaters in the world.

It is the only RoDo screen in the world, meaning the dome that can be rotated back over the audience to reveal a regular screen for flat-film projection.

I-Max Movie

A really cool thing about the Science and Industry is their giant dome theater. You can watch amazing Science I-Max movies that make you feel like you are a part of the movie. My note of caution is taking young children into these movies.

If your child is having a hard time sitting and you need to leave, it is hard to get out of this theater while the movie is playing due to the steep seating. I would suggest if you think you might need to leave to sit up near the top all the way near the middle aisle so you can make an easy escape.

The other issue is the movies can activate motion sickness. The further up you sit in the theatre the less dizzy you will feel. So, make sure to get in line early for the best seats in the theatre.

Tip: if there is a Movie you really want to see, order your tickets in advance because they do sell out on busy days.

Before or after the movie, check out all the cool space exhibits outside the theatre.

Idea Factory

This hands-on kids area for children 10 and younger is so much fun. Kids will love exploring the different science concepts they can test out themselves.

It has a timed entrance so that it never gets too crowded. Stop by and pick up a ticket and come back when its your time.
