These Arizona Places Are Offering ‘virtual Visits’ While We’re Stuck At Home

LAUREN GILGER: OK, Mark, so if you’re anything like me, and as this pandemic continues, and so many businesses remain closed, you are probably spending more time inside than you’re used to, especially this time of year.

So much time. Maybe youve read through your pile of books to read or your kid has successfully watched “Frozen 2” what feels like 100 times I have had the song “Let It Go” stuck in my head the last two and a half weeks. Maybe you just need something else to do at this point.

GILGER: Well, youre in luck. Many establishments are going virtual as a way to connect. For example, here the Phoenix Art Museum launched what theyre calling virtual visits and have put more than 19,000 pieces of their art online for you to browse. And the Musical Instrument Museum is letting you travel around their corridors to experience all of their collections.

BRODIE: Now to try to discourage people from gathering but still encouraging people to explore the outdoors, the National Park Service has set up webcams and virtual tours of their parks. That includes the Grand Canyon, which of course closed last week, where you can view the South Rim in real-time or take an online rafting trip down the Colorado River. Probably a lot safer than the real thing.

GILGER: Yeah. Not as wet either.

BRODIE: No, definitely not.

Phoenix, AZ After opening in November 2019, Phoenix Art Museums hugely popular Legends of Speed exhibit an unprecedented selection of more than 20 cars spanning six decades and raced by legends that include Dan Gurney, Stirling Moss, A. J. Foyt and Mario Andretti ended amidst the museums closing as part of COVID-19 precautions. Had its one-week extension moved forward, the museums first-ever major display of racing cars would have continued to draw crowds.

To meet that ongoing interest, the museum is offering a Legends of Speed virtual tour. Rather than simply share the link, we reached out to famed racer Lyn St. James a longtime friend of Vintage Motorsport who served as co-curator for the exhibit for her personal insights about it.

VM: How did the idea for the exhibit originate?LSJ: At the 2018 Monterey Rolex Reunion, Carter Emerson introduced himself, told me of his desire to create an exhibit of legendary racing cars at the museum and asked me if I would help him. I had served on the organizing committee of the Arizona Concours, but after it was discontinued in 2017, I really didnt have any car-related project in my home area.

History Of The Phoenix Art Museum

Looking Back: Teresita Fernández: Elemental at Phoenix Art Museum

Although the museum has been around for 60 years, its community ties go even deeper. In 1915, just three years after Arizona achieved statehood, the Phoenix Womens Club was formed. The club used its platform to establish an art exhibition committee, whose goal was to improve the quality of art offerings at the Arizona State Fair and to purchase one piece of art each year. Their vision, and collection, became the foundational basis for the museums collection today, now consisting of more than 20,000 art objects.

The first outdoor exhibit you walk through is the Hohokam Garden. If you live in the desert and ever tried to grow anything here, you understand how hard it is, and also understand how ingenious these people were. The garden showcases the ancient crops the Hohokam cultivated with the help of their canal irrigation system.

Next, the walk through the site brings you to the ball court, also used as a gathering place for market days. Following the path, you see an ancient pit house. Filled with artifacts, the pithouse is open to walk through. On a hot day, it is surprisingly cool inside. Looking for an explanation, youll notice that it is built partially underground. Before air-conditioning, this was the way they ensured that the house stayed cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Finally, at the end of the trail, youll see the canal we still use today. It is the same one the ancient canal-makers built.
