Things To See In Delaware County

Roxbury today is a graceful and fairly somnolent burg, but it wasnt always that way. Its Main Street is lined with impressive Tudor and Victorian homes and maple shade trees. Helen Gould Shepard, daughter of the famous financier and railroad magnate and Roxbury native Jay Gould, was the town benefactor in the late 1800s. She was responsible for the Gould Memorial Church , built in 1894 by the same architect who designed the state capitol and the famous Dakota apartment building in New York City. Inside are four Tiffany stained-glass windows and a monumental pipe organ. Behind the church is pretty Kirkside Park, formerly Helen Goulds estate. The site has been cleaned up and restored in recent years, with rustic bridges built over the stream and trails and walkways added. A vintage base ball team, the Roxbury Nine, plays its games here May through August . On Labor Day, the town celebrates Turn of the Century Day: Locals dress in period costume, and the opposing team is brought in by vintage train. The John Burroughs Homestead and Woodchuck Lodge, John Burroughs Memorial Road , was the rustic summer retreat of the renowned naturalist and essayist. The 1860s farmhouse, a National Historic Landmark, remains as it was when Burroughs lived and wrote here. To get to it, turn west off of Route 30 heading north to Grand Gorge from Roxbury the house is several miles up on the right.

Theateri Hate Hamlet Opens At Colonial Playhouse

San Luis Obispo Children

ALDAN- Colonial Playhouse, 522 W. Magnolia Ave.,will present Paul Rudniks I Hate Hamlet Friday, Jan. 17 to Saturday, Feb. 1. Fridays and Saturdays shows begin at 8 p.m. and cost $15. Sundays shows begin at 2 p.m. and cost $13.

A young and successful television actor relocates to New York, where he rents a marvelous, gothic apartment. With his television career in limbo, the actor is offered the opportunity to play Hamlet onstage, but theres one problem: He hates Hamlet. His dilemma deepens with the entrance of John Barrymores ghost, who arrives intoxicated and in full costume to the apartment that once was his. The plot thickens with a battle of wills between a young TV star and the ghost of a Broadway legend. The contrast between the two actors, the towering, dissipated Barrymore whose Hamlet was the greatest of his time, and Andrew Rally, hot young television star, leads to a wildly funny duel over women, art, success, duty, television, and yes, the apartment. Three Floors Of Interactive Play Exhibits Perfect For Babies To Elementary

The San Luis Obispo Childrens Museum is the perfect place to spend a morning or an afternoon. We have visited many childrens museums and while some are lacking in the number of activities, we were more than impressed with the SLO Childrens Museum and didnt want to leave at closing time. There are plenty of activities that will appeal to many different types and abilities of children.

Many different topics like community helpers, gravity, space, music and engineering are covered through playful exhibits. There are also many opportunities for climbing, drumming, jumping and getting some energy out! The first floor features a space-themed area including a remote-controlled Mars rover . The second floor is filled with child-sized rooms that have been converted into a post office, grocery store, doctors office, fire station and other community features. A building section with large foam building pieces sparked some serious creativity in my children! The third floor is mostly train-themed and has much more for the very youngest visitors to enjoy. There is also a very elaborate train table with cutouts so your child can stand in the middle of their creation, if you have a train-loving child, you may want to head straight there!

There are also a few outdoor features, both on the stairs and in the courtyard behind the museum, so be sure to check those out too!
