The largest U.S. exhibition of the artists work opens in Detroit this fall

Self-Portrait

In 1922, the Detroit Institute of Arts became the first public museum in the United States to buy a painting by Vincent van Gogh: the 1887 Self-Portrait, which cost the museum $4,200, per the Art Newspapers Martin Bailey.

This fall, a new exhibition at the museum, Van Gogh in America, will mark the 100th anniversary of the historic acquisition. It will be the largest U.S. showcase of the artists work in more than 20 years.

Born in 1853, van Gogh is regarded as one of the most renowned Post-Impressionist painters, known for his ability to express emotion through bold, dramatic brush strokes. But his fame came mostly after his death in 1890 he sold only one painting during his lifetime.

The exhibit, featured across four main galleries, runs through Jan. 22. It includes a guided audio presentation and essays written by scholars and exhibition curators.

“Van Gogh in America” explores how Van Gogh’s work was received in the United States and how the DIA became the first U.S. museum to buy one of his paintings, “Self-Portrait” , for its permanent collection in 1922.

Other Midwestern museums followed suit, but it took roughly 20 more years before a New York museum purchased a Van Gogh work.

Several of the works featured in the exhibit also come from museums closer to home, such as “The Bedroom,” loaned from the Art Institute of Chicago.

New Vincent Van Gogh Exhibit Opens At Detroit Institute Of Arts

Looking at a portrait titled âThe Postman,â Josien van Gogh talked about her great-uncleâs time in Ireland, when the locals wanted him out of town and a disagreement with artist Paul Gaugin led to van Gogh famously cutting off his own ear.

âThe Postmanâ offers a slightly different view of the troubled painter during his troubled time.

âHe was his friend,â van Gogh said, âand he didnât have so many friends, Vincent,â.

She was on hand Sept. 29 to reveal the DIAâs latest exhibit, âVan Gogh in America,â a collection of 74 paintings by Vincent van Gogh commemorating the 100th anniversary of when the DIA was the first American museum to acquire a van Gogh.

Van Gogh, who can speak at length about the paintings in the exhibit, brought a unique perspective to anyone lucky enough to talk with her in the gallery. Her stories behind the paintings werenât just art history. They were family history.

âA version of that painting hung in my house,â she said, walking by a painting titled âThe Bedroom.â Another, she said, perfectly captures the south of France, where Vincent van Gogh spent time in an asylum for mental health issues.

Shaw said in 1922, most Americans werenât ready for van Goghâs work and that the DIA took a bold step by buying one of his paintings, even if it was more than 30 years after his death.

Figuring out why America was so slow to take to van Gogh, Shaw said, was her driving question in putting the gallery together.

DETROIT – A one-of-a-kind Vincent van Gogh exhibition coming only to Michigan has added even more pieces. More than 70 authentic van Gogh works will now be on display at Van Gogh in America at the Detroit Institute of Arts from October 2, 2022 through January 22, 2023.

This exhibition was originally scheduled to be at the DIA from June 21 through September 27, 2020, but was pushed back more than two years. The DIA said these rescheduled dates would allow sufficient time for international travel to return to normal amid the COVID pandemic as the exhibition includes a number of international lenders.

The 2022 dates also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the museums acquisition of the van Gogh Self-Portrait in 1922. The DIA was actually the first public museum in the U.S. to purchase a painting by van Gogh.

Tickets are not yet on sale for this exhibition which will include pieces from museums and private collections from around the world. The works will focus on showing how Americas view of van Goghs work evolved during the first half of the 20th century.

On January 31, 1922, Ralph. H. Booth, president of the City of Detroit Arts Commission, attended the New York auction of dealer Dikran Kelekians collection and, on behalf of the museum, successfully bid on Van Goghs Self-Portrait. He paid $4,200, the equivalent of about $75,000 in 2022 money. The artist had garnered critical acclaim in Europe, especially in Germany, and was not unknown in America, but the acquisition by DIA was a bold one at the time.

In a note from Wilhelm Valentinerart adviser to the DIA and its director beginning in 1924to Ralph Booth two months after the acquisition, Valentiner wrote: I congratulate the Museum. It seems very courageous to buy works by these remarkable mastersespecially Van Gogh seems to me one of the great ones. I hope it will be appreciated by the people in Detroit if not now, I do not doubt, some time in the future.

Van Gogh, of course, never saw America, but America eventually saw him, and Van Gogh in America gives the country a new opportunity to see him like never before.
