In 1974, oil magnate J. Paul Getty opened a museum of his holdings in a faux villa. Eventually the decorative arts and paintings were moved to the Getty Center, and the villa was closed for conversion into a museum for Gettys collection of Mediterranean antiquities. Today, there are roughly 1,200 artifacts on display at any one time, dated between 6,500 BC and 500 AD, and organized under such themes as Gods and Goddesses and Stories of the Trojan War. Even if youre not interested in the art, the palatial courtyards and manicured gardens are worth the visit.

Chris Burdens Urban Light, a piece made up of 202 cast-iron street lamps gathered from around L.A. and restored to working order, has quickly become one of the citys indelible landmarks. But youd be selling yourself short if you dont venture beyond the photo-friendly installation LACMAs collections boast modernist masterpieces, large-scale contemporary works , traditional Japanese screens and by far L.A.s most consistently terrific special exhibitions.
From Interstate 5 South:
- Exit at La Jolla Village Drive
- Turn right at the end of the ramp onto La Jolla Village Drive
- Turn left at the third traffic signal onto Torrey Pines Road
- Travel approximately 4 miles down a long hill and then back up
- Turn right at the traffic signal on top of the rise of the road onto Prospect Street
MCASD is located approximately one mile down Prospect Street on the right-hand side. Free two-hour street parking is available in front of the Museum and on nearby cross streets.

Extended Hours
The Museum will be open until 8:00 p.m. on Fridays starting June 24 through August 5. Regular admission rates apply during Summer Friday Extended Hours Friday, July 1, through Friday, August 5.

Welcome to The Museum of Contemporary Art. With two distinct venuesMOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCAand Michael Heizers seminal artwork Double Negative in the Nevada desert, we engage audiences through an ambitious program of exhibitions, educational programs, and publishing.
Advance ticket reservations are now available! Tickets will be released every two weeks on Tuesday at noon.
All visitors, including members, need to get advance timed-entry tickets online. A very limited number of tickets may be available to be reserved on-site, subject to capacity. Phone reservations are available at the MOCA Box Office by calling 213-633-5351 between the hours of 11am-5pm WednesdaySunday. General admission to MOCA is free courtesy of Carolyn Clark Powers.

Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago
Located one block east of the historic Water Tower in the Streeterville neighborhood, the MCA champions the provocative side of contemporary art and culture.
Founded in 1967 as a Kunsthalle, or non collecting art gallery, the MCA is now one of the worlds largest museums dedicated to art. Since our inception, it has been our mission to exhibit new and experimental work in all media, paired with ambitious education programs. In 1974, we expanded our mission to include collecting and preserving contemporary art for future generations with the inauguration of a permanent collection that has grown to include more than 2,000 works. After 29 years in a storefront on Ontario Street, the museum moved to our current location in 1996, giving our collection, exhibitions, performances, and programming room to evolve to meet the needs of art, artists, and audiences of today
Tuesdays are free for Illinois residents and we are open until 9 pm we are closed on Mondays.
The MCA also offers FREE admission for youth 18 and under all year long.

Museum Of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art is always free for visitors under age 18, visitors with disabilities and their caregivers receive free admission, members of the military and police and fire departments and veterans, and Illinois elementary and high school teachers.
- Illinois residents receive free admission every Tuesday
To encourage more people to visit and visit often, the MCA has a pay-what-you-can policy no one will be turned away. They also offer suggested admission of $3 each for up to six individuals when visitors present their LINK Card as part of the Museums for All program.

At the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, free admission days for Illinois residents are on Tuesdays, year-round with proof of residency.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is conveniently located at near the L Red Line, bus routes, Divvy bikes and paid parking.
Closed on New Year?s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Mondays. The museum is open on select holiday Mondays.
About the museum: MCA Chicago documents contemporary visual culture through painting, sculpture, photography, video and film and performance. We welcome social, professional, family, religious, and all other groups to view the wonders of The San Diego Museum of Art. Self-Guided groups require a reservation and payment 14-days in advance. For groups requesting a Docent guided tour a reservation 21-days in advance of your visit. For all groups we request one adult chaperone for every ten children under the age of 15.

How Much Time To Spend
Most visitors should plan on spending at least 2 ½ hours at MoMA.
Quicker visits can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on what you want to see at the museum.
According to the reviews, many people seemed to feel that skip-the-line tickets saved them time waiting for a ticket.
Others reported short or no lines at all, but it all depends on when you go to the museum.
We recommend getting the skip-the-line ticket just to make sure that you wont have to wait very long.
