Provenance Of The Menorah
Before any new acquisition, the Jewish Museum Berlin checks its provenance: In this case, there are no signs or suspicions of persecution-related expropriation having occurred between the years 1933 and 1945, as the object was often mentioned in publications, with William Gross named as the owner, and there were no restitution claims. It can therefore be assumed that this object was brought to Mandatory Palestine as an emigrant possession.

There is a Hanukkah play in the works, being written by Rebbetzin Lisa Mayer just for this celebration, to be performed by our rabbis. Well also enjoy music from Rabbi Sruli and Rebbetzin Lisa!

Hanukkah The Festival Of Lights
Every year Jews around the world celebrate the eight-day winter holiday of Hanukkah, which commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. Candles are lit and blessings are said at nightfall to remember the Hanukkah miracle: According to an account in the Talmud, a single container of oil was found in the ravaged Temple, which should have only sufficed to light the Temples candelabrum for one day but miraculously kept it burning for eight days and nights.

Jewish Museum Hagenauer Menorah
This piece is a limited edition based on a Hanukkah lamp in the Jewish Museums collection.
The artist, Karl Hagenauer, trained with Josef Hoffmann, one of the founders of the Viennese modern design movement known as the Wiener Werkstätte. Hoffmanns influence can be seen in the curling stems and leaves and in the fluted base. I chose this Hanukkah lamp because I have a particular love of modernist design from the early twentieth century.

Change In Style Of Ceremonial Objects
Only a very small number of Jewish ceremonial objects made by artists in Germany during the 1920s still exist today. From the 1890s through the 1930s, Jewish ritual objects were usually made in historicized forms and decorated with ornamental motifs. Wolperts 1924 menorah was the starting point from which he subsequently spearheaded radical change in the form and style of Judaica, influencing it for generations to come. To this day, Wolpert is regarded as the father of contemporary Judaica objects.

One of my favorite gift shops is the Jewish Museum gift shop in New York.
I met with Stacey Zaleski, Director of Merchandising and the brains behind the shop, this past spring. What was supposed to be an hour-long walk-through easily turned into two hours.

The Deep Meaning Of The Menorah
Historian Simon Sebag Montefiore talks about Jerusalem as not only the holy city in Israel but also a multivalent metaphor, the place of our origin and the place to which we will one day return, a memory as well as a hope that each one of us carries inside us no matter where we live. Thought of this way, the menorah is not only a commemorative object referring to the miracle in the Temple, when The Maccabees defeated the Seleucids and when one day’s worth of oil lasted eight. The menorah is also our way of sanctifying the stronghold of the family home.

Contemporary Interpretations Of The Menorah By Israeli Artisans
Contemporary designs are also available, such as Avner Agayof’s minimalist-style menorahs. These colorful menorahs are made of anodized aluminum and break down into modular units and to be stored in a clever wooden box. World-renowned sculptor David Gerstein has designed a number of colorful Hanukkah menorahs in his signature approach, sheet steel plasma cut into playful patterns and printed in exuberant colors. You will also find hand-painted designs from Jerusalem-based Yair Emanuel as well as modernist designs from Haifa-based Shraga Landesman.
Great Gift Shop Minimalistic Museum
Went here on a Saturday afternoon, $12 admission fee to see the Allen Ginsburg photo exhibit…I’d give it a D-. A 1950’s homosexual, multi-parnter, DMT using photographer, whose photos, for the age, were mediocre at best. Several of the photos on display were actually taken by his friends, but included in his collection. Not sure what the curators were thinking when they decided to center-stage this exhibit…perhaps, that he was “one of our own”, in religion, sexual orientation, and leading into the 1960’s drug counter-culture movement in S.F., but what…in a Contemporary Jewish Museum??? Ginsburg’s photo montage was interesting, culturally stimulating, but sad material and, as mentioned previously, mediocre with many photos , taken by his friend’s wife and others. He brushed shoulders with several other interesting characters of the time, but no more so that many other unknown artists/photographers. Would never recommend this exhibit, and make me second-guess any recommendation of the CJM!Beautiful gift shop, exterior grounds, but even the art displayed in the secondary exhibits were marginal.

How Is The Menorah Used During Hanukkah
Every night of Hanukkah , a candle is lit as a celebration of the miracle that God performed for the Maccabees in their struggle against the Greek Army. It is considered an act of beautification to add an extra candle every night until your Menorah is gleaming with eight candles on the last night. Alongside the eight menorah candles, there is a separate candle known as the shamash that is used to light the Hanukkah candles every night.

Influences Of The Bauhaus School
The director of the applied arts school in Frankfurt in Wolperts time was Christian Dell, who had previously taught as a Master of Form at the Bauhaus school. He brought the Bauhaus innovative ideas and work methods to his Frankfurt position. Wolpert made the modernist style his own and subsequently focused on producing modern, functional Jewish ceremonial objects made of silver.
In 1928, Karl Schwarz, the Director of the first Jewish Museum Berlin which stood in Oranienburger Strasse until the Kristallnacht pogrom of November 1938 commissioned Wolpert to create a series of Jewish ceremonial objects that were then displayed in the museum as well as in a traveling exhibition.
His pieces stand out for their simple, elegant forms, their functionality, and the beauty of their Hebrew lettering, which he incorporated into many of his later creations.

What Does The Hanukkah Menorah Symbolize
The Hanukkah Menorah symbolizes the miracle that occurred when the Maccabees re-sanctified the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. After taking back control of the Holy Temple, the Maccabees discovered only one kosher jug of olive oil that could be used for lighting the Temple’s Menorah. Even though this was only meant to last one day, a miracle occurred and it lasted for eight days, until more kosher olive oil could be produced. In celebration of this miracle, we light a Hanukkah Menorah for eight nights.

Simple, elegant forms and functionality this menorah, created in 1924 by the artist Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert, is one of the the first pieces of modern Judaica. Wolpert broke with the stylistic conventions that had governed Judaica until then and ushered in a change of form and style that influenced and shaped the artistic designs of generations to come. This menorah made of patinated cast brass was acquired for the collections of the Jewish Museum Berlin in 2021.

What Is The Difference Between A Hanukkiah And A Menorah
On Hanukkah, do we light a Menorah or a Hanukkiah? Is there a difference between these two items? In Hebrew, “menorah” refers to a lamp. Traditionally, the term has been used to describe the seven-branched golden candelabra that stood in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem was continuously lit every day. This is the same candelabra that was sanctified by the Maccabees after the rededication of the Temple. Since the word “menorah” simply means lamp, many refer to the nine-branched candelabra that we light on Hanukkah as a menorah. However, since the Hanukkah Menorah has nine branches and does not contain the same holiness as the original Menorah, some refer to it as a “Hanukkiah.” This latter term is particularly popular in Israel. Paradise Found: A Menorah Celebrating The Garden Of Eden
Making MenorahsKaren feels right at home when she is creating artwork. And, creating menorahs has been an especially fun avenue for her over the years. So, when art consultant, Jeff Kraft, approached Karen about creating a large-scale menorah for an upcoming show, she was certainly up for the challenge. The menorah that Jeff requested was for the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art. The Tulsa, Oklahoma museum was planning a show based on Biblical images in art. Karen knew that her trademark style, in combination with the Bible story of Adam and Eve would be a perfect combination for the menorah.
Through the YearsKaren’s very first menorah, which she created over 20 years ago, was a rather large piece. It was certainly much larger than the typical menorahs that are sold in gift shops and temples today. It was so large that standard retailers said they couldn’t carry it unless she made a smaller version. However, the Adam and Eve menorah that she just finished creating for the Jewish Museum rivals even that first piece. It measures 6 feet long and 2 feet high. In this case, of course, it was intended to be large, an impressive piece of artwork that incorporates the Jewish tradition of the menorah with the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden.
