Lobby Exhibit: Cha Jong Rye

Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum – Incredible Folk Art Model Railroad 2021

Born in Daejeon, Korea and the recipient of an MFA in Sculpture from Ewha Womens University in 1996, sculptor Cha Jong Rye meticulously crafts works which have been featured in exhibits and collections worldwide.

Using wood as her chosen medium, Ms. Cha constructs seamlessly intricate wooden landscapes through her often wall-mounted sculptures. Sanding and layering hundreds of delicate wood boards, her process is intentionally unintentional rather than executing a predetermined design, she allows herself to discover images in the fluidity of arranging and rearranging the uniquely hand-shaped blocks. The result is a richly textured three-dimensional canvas upon which light and shadow dance, transforming the once-recognizable wood material into entirely abstracted landscapes reminiscent of wrinkled linen or rippling water.

Cha Jong Rye currently works and resides just outside of Seoul, South Korea.

The Miller House and Garden

The Miller House is a Mid-Century modern home designed by Eero Saarinen and located in Columbus, Indiana. The residence was commissioned by American industrialist, philanthropist, and architecture patron J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1953. Design and construction on the Miller House took four years and was completed in 1957. The home was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2000. In 2009, the home and gardens, along with many of the original furnishings, were donated to the Indianapolis Museum of Art by the Miller family. In addition to Eero Saarinen, the house and gardens showcase the work of leading 20th-century figures such as interior designer Alexander Girard, landscape architect Dan Kiley, and principal design associate at the Saarinen office, Kevin Roche.

Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres, the Gardens at Newfields, the Beer Garden, and more. It is located at the corner of North Michigan Road and West 38th Street, about three miles north of downtown Indianapolis, northwest of Crown Hill Cemetery. Move To Current Location

In 1960, Art Association of Indianapolis board members began discussing the idea of placing the museum at the center of a new cultural campus. Inspired by University Circle in Cleveland, Ohio, board chairman Herman Krannert proposed building an “Acropolitan Area” that would combine a number of cultural institutions in a natural setting. The museum’s location on the grounds of Oldfields allowed architect Ambrose Madison Richardson to build on the idea of an acropolis while also utilizing the natural features of the site. Krannert Pavilion opened in 1970 as the first of four buildings located on the museum’s grounds. Following the opening of Krannert, the expansion continued with the Clowes Pavilion in 1972, which housed the Clowes’ collection of Old Masters. Construction on the Showalter Pavilion and Sutphin Fountain was completed in 1973. In 1986, the IMA’s board members chose Edward Larrabee Barnes to design the Hulman Pavilion, a new wing of the museum which housed the Eiteljorg collection of African and South Pacific art. The pavilion opened in 1990 and increased the exhibition space to more than 80,000 square feet . The expansion aimed to provide clearer chronological continuity and a more coherent flow as visitors moved from one gallery to the next.

My Soul Has Got To Move

Long-Sharp Gallery Indianapolis kicked off its 2022 gallery season with a solo exhibition for mixed-media artist Lavett Ballard. The exhibit, My Soul Has Got To Move, opened on February 4th and closed March 26th. It featured more than a dozen works by Ballard, with over half created specifically for this exhibition.

The Indianapolis exhibition title referenced a 1978 gospel-funk-soul song of the same name, a tune about change and transformation many of the artworks and their titles express such themes as presence, personal evolution, gender empowerment, racial solidarity, and collective uplift, said Dr. Tiffany E. Barber, scholar, curator, and critic who wrote the essay about Ballard and her works in this exhibit.

Ballards works have been exhibited in numerous museums, are in important collections, and her portrait of Rosa Parks was featured on the 2020 cover of TIME Magazine. She was recently named by Black Art in America as one of the top 10 emerging Black female artists.
