Whats Special About The Science Museum Of Virginia

Childrens Museum in Portsmouth, VA

The focal point of the museum as you enter is the Foucault Pendulum. Located in the Rotunda, the pendulum illustrates the Earths rotation. Our visit began at the How People Make Things exhibit. Inspired by the Mister Rogers Factory Tours, at first glance, it seemed slightly boring for my youngster.

This area is great for older children who want to make hands-on creations. In this exhibit you can see how a Louisville Slugger bat is made, die cut an object, melt wax to make a crayon or deform a wire to make a spring. There are molds of playground balls, wheels and shoes. I was bummed that the machine showing the process how to make a spoon was out of order.

Running the Numbers, an American self-portrait, is an eye opening look at the negative behaviors in our society through art. A portrait of toothpicks displays the number of trees cut each year in the U.S. to create junk mail. The display illustrates the harsh consumption of stuff that is killing us and our environment. It is really eye opening and perfect for older students and adults.

Learn about maritime life downstairs at the beach exhibit. Highlights include a miniature version of King Neptune , examples of ocean life, a David Hasselhoff-like lifeguard station and a game of tic-tac-toe crabs. Outside, you can see the Aluminaut, the worlds first aluminum submarine.

While At The Science Museum

  • Please ask a staff member or a volunteer if you have any questions while youre visiting!
  • Be respectful of other guests. Please recognize if there is a line for a popular experience and move along after your attempt so others can enjoy it, too. Trust us, we know its tempting to keep playing the air hockey robot.
  • Were a big museum, but not every room is huge. If spaces like the Art Lab or Animal Lab are crowded, try checking out another spot and head back later. The animals will still be there!
  • Please observe the age restrictions in LightPlace, our space for early learners ages five and younger. The big kids have the rest of the Science Museum so lets reserve this space for our younger scientists.
  • The concession stand outside The Dome will remain closed at this time. But have no fear! If you need a snack, we have converted our café on Level 1 to a vending and snacking area for guests.
  • Do we need to say shirts and shoes are required? Okay. Shirts and shoes are required. And something covering your bottom half as well. And please refrain from wearing clothing with adult language or that depicts adult situations.
  • No firearms are allowed in the Science Museum.
  • Never stop learning! Science is all around you all the time.

Plan Your Visit

We have been to so many childrens and science museums over the years in Providence, Boston, Philly, Milwaukee, and Sarasota, to name a few I honestly didnt think I could be impressed at this point. Both the Childrens Museum of Richmond and the Virginia Science Museum were delightful surprises. The childrens museums original location has everything little kids love without being too big or overwhelming. And right next door, the science museum impresses with its new Boost exhibit and state of the art IMAX theater. Keep reading for highlights and tips that make these two museums a must-do on your Richmond itinerary even if your family has been to more museums than you can count.

The Childrens Museum of Richmond actually has several satellite locations, but we visited the original location, Central, which is next door to the Science Museum of Richmond. Here are highlights and tips for visiting:

When the weather isnt cooperating, one of my favorite things about the museum is how many elements of the great outdoors are brought inside: Caves to explore, a cow to milk, a dock to dangle feet from, and a gaggle of hula hoops to keep kids moving. Along the walls throughout the museum, incredibly realistic artwork depicting the Birds of Richmond practically sings. The Living Tree House is the centerpiece, a gross-motor play area with stairs, slides, periscopes, and best of all live animals native to Virginia that kids can watch through the glass enclosures.

Murals

With the advent of the Richmond Mural Project by RVA Mag and Art Whino as well as the RVA Street Art Festival in 2013, the city quickly gained more than 100 murals from international mural artists such as Aryz, Roa, , and Natalia Rak. While the RMP focused on international talent, the RVA Street Art festival helmed by long-time local mural artist Ed Trask focused largely on regional artists ” rel=”nofollow”> Mark Jenkins.) After some criticism the RMP included its first local artist, , who was already on the international circuit following the next year with . The two festivals are unrelated, with the RMP being defunct, and the RVA Street Art festival happening sporadically due to funding issues. With the advent of the George Floyd protests across America, local artist Hamilton Glass spearheaded the Mending Walls Project featuring walls by pairs of local artists. Many of the murals are unrelated to any project, and are done under the impetus of the artists alone.
