The main attraction is a big room with very tall ceilings where video projections take you through artfully animated, glowing versions of all the Van Gogh classics. The projections extend to the floor, sending images across your feet, and really creating that immersive feeling. Youll be surrounded by Sunflowers,Starry Night, and his many, many self portraits.

If youre a serious art connoisseur, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is probably not for you.

The experience is kind of like Wonderspaces at the mall meets your moms favorite refrigerator magnet. Which is not bad! Its just not for art snobs. But if youre hungry for some beautiful images and stunning colors, head on over.

You walk into the Tower Theater in Upper Darby the long-secret mystery location that appears to perhaps have been more of a last resort and are immediately greeted by blue walls that look like theyre covered with the painters signature brush strokes. Friendly staff ushers in what is mostly a crowd of nice older ladies in sensible shoes. Big poster boards explain Van Goghs evolution as an artist, his life and technique, and what this event produced by European company Fever is all about.

A huge three-dimensional Van Gogh head awaits you in a small room, where video projections change its appearance into different iterations of the painters self portraits.

The Carl Otto Kretzschmar Von Kienbusch Collection

The museum also houses the armor collection of Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch. The Von Kienbusch collection was bequeathed by the celebrated collector to the museum in 1976, the Bicentennial Anniversary of the American Revolution. The Von Kienbusch holdings are comprehensive and include European and Southwest Asian arms and armor spanning several centuries.

On May 30, 2000, the museum and the State Art Collections in Dresden, Germany , announced an agreement for the return of five pieces of armor stolen from Dresden during World War II. In 1953, Von Kienbusch had unsuspectingly purchased the armor, which was part of his 1976 bequest. Von Kienbusch published catalogs of his collection, which eventually led Dresden authorities to bring the matter up with the museum.

Each year the museum organizes several special exhibitions. Special exhibitions have featured Salvador Dalà in 2005, in 2009, in 2010,Vincent van Gogh in 2012,Pablo Picasso in 2014,John James Audubon and Andy Warhol in 2016,Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent in 2017, and the Duchamp siblingsâ, Gaston, Raymond and Suzanneâin 2019. Where Is This All Happening

The iconic Tower Theater in Upper Darby! Actually, its a pretty amazing setup. I was wondering how on earth they were going to have a big open hall in that building. Well, they built the entire Van Gogh Experience on platforms above the seats.

The Tower Theater marquee

All you see as you walk is carpeting, but whats beneath that carpeting and the structure it covers are the same seats people sat in for decades to watch David Bowie, Prince and Bruce Springsteen perform. And when youre in the VR lounge, look up. Just a couple of feet above your head is the unmistakable ceiling of the Tower Theater. Youll recognize it immediately.

Is There A Bar Inside

Its the Tower Theater, and theres always a bar inside the Tower Theater. Van Gogh-themed cocktails are $10 to $15. Youll pay $6 to $8 for a beer. Wines are $11 for a glass though, notably, you cant get a glass of red wine. Why? There were concerns that drips and spills would stain the carpet. I dunno. Id sell the $11 wines and bring in a carpet cleaner, but what do I know?

List Of Works By Vincent Van Gogh

Jump to navigationJump to searchSelf-portrait dedicated to Paul Gauguin, September 1888, , Oil on canvas, 62 cm × 52 cm. Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA.

List of works by Vincent van Gogh is an incomplete list of paintings and other works by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh .Little appreciated during his lifetime, his fame grew in the years after his death. According to the legend, Van Gogh sold only one painting, The Red Vineyard, bought for 400 francs by the painter and art collector Anna Boch. Today, he is widely regarded as one of history’s greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years. He produced more than 2,000 artworks, consisting of around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. In 2013, Sunset at Montmajour became the first full-sized Van Gogh painting to be newly confirmed since 1928.

Today many of his piecesincluding his numerous self portraits, landscapes, portraits and sunflowersare among the world’s most recognizable and expensive works of art. On March 30, 1987, Irises was sold for a record US$53.9 million at Sotheby’s on May 15, 1990, his Portrait of Dr. Gachet was sold for US$82.5 million at Christie’s, establishing a new price record until exceeded in 2004 by a Picasso painting.

How Long Does It Take To Get Through The Whole Thing

van Gogh at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

We breezed through the gallery in about 10 minutes, though you could certainly spend 30 minutes if youre looking and reading closely. The show in the big hall runs on a loop thats about 35 minutes long. I would recommend that you plan on staying for the whole thing. Its genuinely rewarding. The VR experience takes about 10 minutes. And then theres the ubiquitous gift shop. Yes, you exit through the gift shop.

You can easily turn this into a dinner and a show excursion. Pho & Cafe Anh Hong is a quick walk from the Tower and a worthy destination. The Korean supermarket H-Mart is also walkable, and their popular second floor food court offers Korean and Japanese options for a quick meal. For Mexican, hit up La Guera . One last walkable choice: the Best of Philly-winning African restaurant Kings & Queens. Or, you could drive or Uber to Picas, an iconic Delco Italian restaurant that happens to make Tina Feys favorite pizza. Just down the road from Picas is Cawleys for beers and bar food.

But Is The Van Gogh Experience Any Good

I was pretty skeptical going into it, to be honest. So basically theyre just projecting a bunch of paintings Ive seen a million times onto big walls? That was the thought running through my head as I traveled to the venue. But the big room with all of the lights and sounds and projections is a positively thrilling way to experience the work of one of the worlds greatest artists. Youre literally surrounded by his art and by music perfectly synched to the animations. Youll see a Van Gogh painting on one of the 15,000-square-foot screens and water starts pouring out of it and it really looks like water is pouring out of it. Even the floor beneath your feet morphs and melts with beautiful imagery. Its trippy. And its a lot to take in. The kind of thing where you might want to go twice to catch what you missed.

I had my 15-year-old, not-particularly-arty son with me and after we sat in the big hall for about 20 minutes, I asked him if he wanted to check out the virtual reality lounge. He said, No, lets wait. This is really good. So take that for what its worth. As for the art gallery, you do learn a lot about Van Gogh while in there if you take the time to read whats on the signage, but as far as art galleries go, I could take it or leave it. And the VR thing is cool enough.

Indeed, if you can manage it in the crowded museum galleries, select a painting, perhaps Wheatfield from 1888, with its characteristic high horizon line. Study it from across the room. Then move closer and you will see an amazing transformation, an act of alchemy, in which the inner life of plants, trees, underbrush, even clouds and drops of rain are revealed.

When Does The Van Gogh Experience Start And End

Attraction of the Week: The Philadelphia Museum of Art ...

After some delays, the Van Gogh Experience opened to the general public on Friday, September 3rd. Its currently scheduled to run through the end of November. Ticket availability can be a little sketchy for September and October, though you can still find tickets, especially if you dont need to go on a weekend. November is pretty wide open. For now. The buzz is reallllly starting to build, so I would buy your tickets sooner than later. The experience starts at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. depending on the day of the week.

Should I Bring My Kids

My 15 year old says absolutely. This is definitely a novel way to introduce your kids to an artist. And its hard not to find the Experience in the big hall dazzling, no matter your age. Theres also an art room with lots of supplies, so your kid can get all Van Gogh for a bit and take home their own creation. I personally wouldnt bring little kids , especially those with short attention spans. Ultimately, the Van Gogh Experience can be a meditative solo outing, a great date, a night out with friends, or family fun.

What Is The Van Gogh Experience

The Van Gogh Experience is an immersive art exhibit all about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. The first part of the experience is a typical gallery setup, showing famous and not-so-famous works by Van Gogh. As you walk through, youll also find 3-D visuals of his works and other unique presentations. Theres a virtual reality experience where you put on goggles and youre in a recreation of Van Goghs bedroom based off his paintings. Then you walk outside to explore his environment that he painted. You see a sight in his town, and then you see a visual of the actual painting inspired by that image. But the real centerpiece of the Van Gogh Experience is a huge hall where you can sit or stand and take in a fascinating seemingly three-dimensional audio-visual presentation about Van Gogh and his artwork. So think of it as a very technologically advanced Van Gogh pop-up museum.

How Do I Get There

The Tower Theater is at 69th and Ludlow streets in Upper Darby. Theres a lot of street parking nearby, though note that the parking authority there is just as brutally efficient as the PPA. There is a parking garage at the intersection of 69th and Chestnut. The Upper Darby municipal lot is at Garrett Road and Long Lane, so about a five minute walk from the Tower Theater. Of course, the 69th Street Terminal of the Market-Frankford line is a block away from the Tower, so public transportation is an easy option.
