Gothic Art In The Florence Museum

Florence’s Uffizi museum reopens with pandemic restrictions

Start at room one, which is devoted to gothic art from countries other than Italy. Rooms two to six are devoted to Italian Gothic art from the twelfth to the fourteenth century. For example, the famous Ognissanti Madonna by Giotto is here. A further distinction is made between the naturalistic influences, which can be found in room four. In room three you will find the paintings of Duccio and his followers, who show the opposite in their artwork.

What Museums Are Open On Mondays In Florence What To Do On Mondays In Florence

In general, museums in Florence alternate their opening and closing days so that not all museums are closed on the same day! Makes sense, right? Some close on Sundays, others on Mondays and a few others close on Tuesdays.

Sometimes they have alternate closings during the month such as open the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month but closed on the 2nd and 4th. These can be very confusing! As you’re planning your visit to Florence, we figured a quick guide with a list of museums that are open on Mondays should make it easier for you to plan your visit, let me know if you find any info missing you’d like me to add by posting on the comments at the end of the page.

Again, please make this important note: the Uffizi and Accademia are always closed on Mondays but open on Sundays. Also pay attention to the notes below as they indicate particular hours or cumulative tickets.

Northern European And Late Italian Art

In rooms 44-55 you will find masterpieces from other European countries. For example, in room 45 you have the masters of naturalism. Room 43 is a room dedicated to the Flemish artist Memling. Room 55 is home to other Flemish masters, such as Rubens and Van Dyck. In room 49 there are self-portraits by Rembrandt. Rooms 90-93 show late Italian artists such as Caravaggio.

The 6 Most Important And Influential Florence Museums

Unlike Rome, Paris or London, Florence is a small village rather than a city. That said, it is the small city that pulled Europe out of darkness the birthplace of the Renaissance. Per capita, Florence is home to one of the greatest collections of artwork the world knows.

The artists born and trained in Florence would go on to decorate Europe at large. While this list is definitely shorter than the ones youll find in Paris or Rome, it is more than most could cover on their first trip to Florence.

Of all the people from Italys Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci is probably the most important, a genius ahead of his time who excelled in art, architecture, science, and even theatre. And he kept copious notes, as well as publishing many works, that give us a wealth of knowledge about the man.

The Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum tells his story mainly through his inventions . About 50 of his inventions have been built based on his designs and you can try them for yourself.

The museum is definitely suitable for children, although its more than a kids museum. Everyone will appreciate learning more about da Vincis genius.

Hall Of The Prisoners And The Tribune: Michelangelo’s David And The Slaves

The most famous section of the Galleria is surely the Hall of the Prisoners, displaying Michelangelos unfinished Slaves. Today the arrangements of the Prisoners along the corridor is a growing crescendo of emotions to the feet of David, exposed under a circular skylight. Next to the Tribuna of David youll find a series of paintings by Alessandro Allori which are a delightful vocabulary of the symbolism of flowers. Chase the key for explaining hidden messages among a triumph of botanical species like tulips, daisies, lilies, lilies of the valley, citrus and forget-me-nots are displayed a few steps from David.

Next to the Allori large panels youll find the antic roots of the museum, the ancient core of the hospital which now is part of the Galleria dellAccademia. In 1784, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, converted the friary hospital of San Matthew and the convent of San Niccolò di Cafaggio to house the Gallery so students in the adjoining Accademia delle Belle Arti could study the greatest works of the past. Exactly in the Gipsoteca Bartolini youll find traces of the 19th century plaster casts by Lorenzo Bartolini, one of the greatest sculptors and brilliant professors of the Academy.

Pitti Palace And The Boboli Gardens

You really cannot mention Florence without mentioning the Medici. They were the most influential dynasty in Italian history and arguably the history of the World. Needless to say, they have a massive estate in Florence. The estate has been preserved and converted into one of the most iconic Florence museums.

Their estate is on the south side of the River close to but away from the action in the center. It also could be considered a strategic choice considering their power. If there were general revolt from the people of Florence theyd have a strategic advantage defending themselves. They also had their own private gate entering and leaving the walls of Florence.

The Medici did not build the estate but instead bought it from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany which is not a person but a monarchy that controlled Tuscany off and on for a few hundred years. That said, the Medici did expand and add significantly to the estates opulence. Today, I would describe it as a must-see attraction in Florence. This is due to its wealth of artwork and low visitor count.

The attached Boboli Gardens are also glorious and included in the admission cost to get inside the Pitti Palace.

Hours: Tuesday Sunday 8:30 am 6:30 pm

Admission: 16 adults | Free for children 17 and under with passport

Address: Piazza de Pitti, 1

State Museums In Florence: Museums Run By The Italian State

There are many museums in Florence beyond the Uffizi and AccademiaGalleries. Museums in Florence are can be divided into 3 types: those run by the Italian national government, which are called State museums, those run by the city which fall under the Florentine Civic Museums office or private .

In order to help you sort out which are which, I’ve created a list below of the STATE MUSEUMS. This is particularly important when special openings occur or when free entry is offered into State museums only . For this reason, it is always handy to understand which are which.

** ALL OF THE STATE MUSEUMS below offer FREE entrance to everyone on the FIRST SUNDAY of every month between October and March!! This is a new change to policy from February 28, 2019, read our blog post to see what else has changed as far as free museum days go for State museums. City museums do something similar, but ONLY for local residents. **

To further complicate some matters, since summer 2014 the state museums in Florence have been split up into 4 independent entities that control the museums under each, thus creating their own policies separate from national policies. You can see this with the new policy in 2019 with each entity creating their own separate calendars for free museums days throughout the year. Check out the blog post above since it has information on the new free museum days for 2019.

Priceless works of art given to Florence’s cathedral are housed in the adjoining museum, along with originals of the more vulnerable works, such as Ghiberti’s bronze door panels, brought indoors for safekeeping.

Although the themes here are almost entirely religious, the different media and craftsmanship give the collection tremendous variety.
