Associated with the post-impressionist movement, his many works also greatly influenced fauvism and expressionism, heralding some of the greatest movements in art history. Therefore, he deserved a place worthy of his talent to display the wide variety of his work. Inside the Van Gogh Museum you can discover the artist’s greatest masterpieces such as the famous Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, Almond Blossoms and The Sower. In short, the museum is a must-visit if you are in Amsterdam.

Vincent Wanted To Be Known As The Painter Of Sunflowers

Just like other painters working at the time, Vincent made flower still lifes. But he did things a little differently. After practising with different flowers, he chose a specific variety: the sunflower. His fellow painters thought that sunflowers were perhaps somewhat coarse and unrefined. But this is exactly what Vincent liked, and he also enjoyed painting flowers that had gone to seed. He gave sunflowers the lead role in several paintings.

Vincent knew that his sunflower paintings were special. As did other people. After he died, friends brought sunflowers with them to his funeral. Sunflowers became synonymous with Vincent, just as he had hoped.

After this, some of them may begin to loose their petals.

The Sunflowers Were Meant To Symbolise Gratitude

Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers Live Amsterdam

Vincent wanted to combine two versions of the Sunflowers with Woman Rocking the Cradle, the portrait that he made as an homage to the comforting mother figure. Together, the paintings were to form a triptych. The two Sunflowers were the yellow panels that would intensify the colours of the portrait. Vincent thought that the triptych as a whole symbolised gratitude.

On display are Van Goghs other flower paintings , the afterlife of the painting, its far-reaching influence, but also details of its recent conservation work. Most striking are the reconstructions by Charlotte Caspers, smaller canvases which copy views of the painting, using the same materials. These zoomed in views of the dying flower heads and of Van Goghs signature reveal the paintings original colours, made up of brighter reds, pale lilacs and vivid chrome yellow. Through Caspers work alongside the museums conservation team we are transported back to 1889 and the works conception. We are also shown x-ray images of the Sunflowers, revealing an added strip of canvas at the top of the painting, which Van Gogh used to correct the placement of the vase.

The Initial Versions August 1888

None meets the descriptions supplied by van Gogh himself in his announcement of the series in every detail. The first version differs in size, is painted on a size 20 canvasnot on a size 15 canvas as indicatedand all the others differ in the number of flowers depicted from van Gogh’s announcement. The second was evidently enlarged and the initial composition altered by insertion of the two flowers lying in the foreground, center and right. Neither the third nor the fourth shows the dozen or 14 flowers indicated by the artist, but morefifteen or sixteen. These alterations are executed wet-in-wet and therefore considered genuine reworkeven the more so as they are copied to the repetitions of January 1889 there is no longer a trace of later alterations, at least in this aspect.

  • Sunflowers , first version: turquoise backgroundOil on canvas, 73.5 × 60 cmPrivate collection

In January 1889, when Vincent had just finished the first repetitions of the Berceuse and the Sunflowers pendants, he told Theo: “I picture to myself these same canvases between those of the sunflowers, which would thus form torches or candelabra beside them, the same size, and so the whole would be composed of seven or nine canvases.”

A definite hint for the arrangement of the triptych is supplied by Van Gogh’s sketch in a letter of July 1889.

Later that year, Vincent selected both versions for his display at Les XX, 1890.

The famous Sunflowers is actually the second series of sunflower paintings by the artist. There is an earlier series of four works, made during his years in Paris, that depict flowers lying on the ground. Paul Gaugin saw Van Goghs Parisian sunflowers and greatly admired them. He subsequently acquired two of the paintings and hung them above his bed in his apartment.

Vincent Decorated Gauguins Room With His Sunflower Paintings

Vincent made his first still lifes of sunflowers in Paris. The painter Paul Gauguin was impressed by them. Vincent was very honoured to hear this. He had recently got to know Gauguin and looked up to him. For precisely this painter to appreciate his work confirmed his feeling that he was on the right track.

Not long after, Vincent moved to the South of France. He wanted to establish an artists community there: a place where artists could live and work, and inspire each other. When he heard that Gauguin would actually be coming, he painted several still lifes of sunflowers with which he decorated the guest bedroom. Gauguin called the paintings completely Vincent.

Van Goghs Sunflower Paintings Were Colour Experiments

Vincent started painting flower still lifes to experiment with colour. Flower still lifes also sold well, which was another reason to paint them. Once Vincent had seen the fresh, colourful paintings of the Impressionists in Paris, he also wanted to introduce more colour into his work.

His initial flower still lifes still had traditional colours, but Vincent tried out increasingly more extreme colour contrasts.
