About Us

The Natural History Museum of Santa Maria is a non-profit organization, which was founded in September, 1996 through an endowment made in memory of Samuel J. Perry. At that time, it began with only a dream and a website, in actual fact. The dream was to provide science/natural history enrichment for the public schools, with live hands-on experiences for the kids.

Santa Maria Natural History Museum Marks 23rd Earth Day Celebration

Held outside the Natural History Museum, 412 S. McClelland St., attendees participated in arts and crafts, feasted on tacos and interacted with zoo animals.

“It took so much hard work from so many people,” said Judy Garrett, museum board president. “It’s true what they say, ‘it takes a village,’ and we couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of our volunteers.”

One of the event’s biggest features was Zoo to You, a live-animal education program run by the Conservation Ambassadors, a Paso Robles nonprofit and rescue zoo. The display featured presentations that involved porcupines, birds and even an 86-pound python named Julias Squeesar.

“It was wonderful. Some of the kids were so interested in the animals,” Garrett said.

The free event was themed “Transforming Your Yard,” and featured a presentation from biologist David Kisner focused on zero-scaping and other techniques to reduce your yard’s impact on the environment.

The event included an award presentation for Susan Tuttle for her work as a naturalist with the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department at Los Flores Ranch. Santa Maria City Councilwoman Gloria Soto also conducted a demonstration on how to compost.

“She did a wonderful job explaining it,” Garrett said. “I think people got a lot out of it.”

Also at the museum were arts and crafts stations, where children made bird feeders out of pine cones, among other crafts. La Oaxaquena food truck sold tacos out front.

And in October 1999, the museum found a permanent home when the doors opened at the historic Hart Home, which was built in 1877 and moved to its current location at 412 S. McClelland St. in Santa Maria in 1973.

With a new location, the museum started receiving donations from the public and was able to amass quite a display of animals, with an ocean exhibit being one of the few purchased displays.

“We are really fortunate to have this wonderful collection, and all of it has been brought in by people that live in our area, for the most part,” Souza said.

But, it isn’t just the exhibits that offer educational opportunities the entire property has been designed to display the native wonders of the Central Coast. The native garden gives people the opportunity to relax with nature: “You can sit in the garden and see the hummingbirds and other birds and insects that are inhabiting the garden and read a book,” Souza pointed out.

One addition that Souza highlighted was a nature journal developed for kids who were limited to learning from home during school closures, allowing children to explore their backyards and neighborhoods to discover the often-overlooked nature that is all around them. The book also encouraged students to think about their feelings and note how they were coping with the unprecedented changes created by a global pandemic.
