Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy Extended

San Francisco Museum’s ‘Smoky’ Art Exhibition Leaves Residents Frustrated

In 2015, pop star Rihanna made headlines when she attended the Met Gala wearing a spectacular creation by Guo Pei, which thrust the designer into the international spotlight. Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy is the first comprehensive exhibition of the work of the woman hailed as Chinas first couturier. This dazzling retrospective features Guo Peis work from the past two decades, drawn from her most important collections shown on Beijing and Paris runways. Through exquisite craftsmanship, lavish embroidery, and unconventional dressmaking techniques, Guo Peis designs fuse the influences of Chinas imperial past, European architecture, folklore, and the botanical world. Many of the opulent and intricate designs featured in Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy will be displayed in galleries alongside masterpieces of European art, creating dialogues that will highlight the historical and iconographical references made by the designer in her creations. This talk can be booked in either English or Mandarin. Guo Pei

Evaluating Content Management Platforms

We looked at a number of technical solutions all with various strengths and weaknesses. We built a matrix of the options as readily scannable guide for FAMSF to parse which tools may best suit their needs. Additionally, we demonstrated each tool for the FAMSF team so they could have a hands-on look at how the platform would work for them. This was especially important for the FAMSF IT team who would ultimately inherit, support, and maintain the tech stack we built for them.

The Winner Is: Gathercontent

Prose.io makes markdown editing a breeze, but would also grant users access to the whole codebase on github, proving too permissive for our circumstances. FAMSF ultimately chose GatherContent, which allowed their content editors to reorder components most easily in the editorial interface.

Prior to the digital stories project with FAMSF, Kalamuna had built a proof-of-concept integration between Kalastatic and Prismics JSON API. This proved useful as we were able to extend our prior work as a basis for the digital stories content platform.

With GatherContent as a content delivery platform to the prototyping tool, there is now a cleaner separation between content and presentation. Stories can inherit all of the components available to each digital story, but within a story components can be reordered and independently styled so as not to impact other digital stories that use the same components.

Story content can be archived in GatherContent once active editing is complete to reduce the impact of the billing footprint a large volume of content the digital stories produce .

A Living For Us All: Artists And The Wpa

During the Great Depression, the federal government established the Works Progress Administration as a way to get artists and other workers employed again. The program also provided opportunities for artists to engage with and document the communities around them.

This new exhibition is primarily culled from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts own collection of Works Progress Administration art including paintings, photography, printmaking and textiles. Some works naturally focus on themes of labor during a period of economic strife others are less literal and turn to abstraction to show the realities of the 1930s.

Several of the works created within the program became controversial for their unflinching depictions of American culture, making them even more significant documents of the times.
