Dead Sea Scrolls Forgeries

Visiting the Bible Museum in Washington DC | Positive School Field Trip Vlogs

Founder Steve Green donated Dead Sea Scrolls parchment fragments to the museum collection for its opening. When the museum catalog was released to the public, however, several outside experts expressed concern that the museum had not adequately accounted for the fragments’ provenance. Arstein Justnes, a professor of biblical studies at the University of Agder in Norway, declared they were outright forgeries. The museum subsequently enlisted the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing to analyze the scrolls. The museum kept the fragments prominently on display for its official opening, while testing was still incomplete. The text of display stated that “scholars continue to debate the authenticity of this fragment”. In 2018 the museum announced that expert examination had led it to conclude that five of the sixteen fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls were forgeries and that the museum had removed them from display. According to the German researchers, those five showed “characteristics inconsistent with ancient origin”. In March 2020, the museum confirmed all sixteen fragments were forgeries.

Dcs New Bible Museum Says It Wants To Avoid Politics But Its Opening Gala Is At The Trump Hotel

The leadership of the Museum of the Bible has been working hard in the run-up to this weekends opening to emphasize the inclusive, academic, apolitical nature of the museum, which organizers say will be the worlds largest dedicated to the Bible and sits just off the Mall.

And so its opening black-tie gala Thursday night is presenting a challenge: The $50,000-a-table fundraising event is at the Trump hotel.

Officials at the nonprofit museum say the decision was for pragmatic, scheduling reasons but some museum employees and academic consultants refused to enter the hotel affiliated with the controversial president.

I would rather not do things that optically look like were aligning with politics. I would prefer we not make those choices, but theyve done it, said one, noting that the political and religious views of the staff and advisers vary widely.

Museum officials said by the time they started looking for space, about a year ago, the Trump hotel was the only ballroom available in Washington that could accommodate such a big group. The Thursday dinner gala will have about 750 people in attendance.

We looked at several places to accommodate our numbers and that was the only place available for our date, Steven Bickley, vice president of the museum, said last week during a tour at the museum. We were looking for a venue, not a statement.

Definitely one of the nicest hotels Ive ever stayed at. All the staff was really nice and the food was really good and at a decent price. Room was clean, we had a great view, and the bathroom was really neat and modern. The shower was beautiful. Only complaint is that our room wouldnt cool below 70* F even though we had it set to 65*F. We told the front desk and they said they will send an engineer to look at it but the problem never got resolved. Other than sleeping with the room uncomfortably warm for me and my gfs taste, our stay was great.
