Tenth Patrol And Zschech’s Suicide

After ten months in Lorient, U-505 departed for her tenth Atlantic patrol, seeking to break her run of bad luck and bad morale. British destroyers spotted her east of the Azores on 24 October 1943, not long after crossing the Bay of Biscay, and she was forced to submerge and endure a severe depth-charge attack. Zschech committed suicide in the submarine’s control room, shooting himself in the head in front of his crew. First watch officer Paul Meyer took command and returned the boat to port with minimal damage. Meyer was “absolved from all blame” by the Kriegsmarine for the incident. Zschech is recorded as the only submariner during the war to commit suicide underwater in response to the stress of a prolonged depth charging.

Among the museum’s exhibits are a full-size replica coal mine, German submarine U-505 captured during World War II, a 3,500-square-foot model railroad, the command module of Apollo 8, and the first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel passenger train .

Chevy Humphrey became president and CEO of the private, non-profit museum in January 2021.

The Other Side Of The Museum Of Science And Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry has been a Chicago Institution for quite some time. During the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition, it was The Palace of Fine Arts, and during the Century of Progress Exposition, it opened under its current name. The grounds just south of the museum are a part of Jackson Parks Osaka Japanese Garden, which, like the museum itself, was a part of the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition Ho-o-Den complex. Through the years, the garden has had many rebirths. Its serenity and constancy provide to the Hyde Park community a respite from the demands of urban living.

The German Submarine Is Worth The Visit

Visiting the U-505 submarine in Chicago

Be prepared for an overwhelming museum. Lots of things to do. Getting to see the German world war II sub was very interesting. What really threw us off was the there were many “not included in admission” visits, including the sub. (Need to get tickets at main entrance and no one told us about it, so it was a bit frustrating. We got to see the D Day movie and it was great.

This place is IMMENSE with so many incredible exhibits and beautiful installations. Plan on a couple/few days if you want to experience it all, but don’t miss the it if you have kids and are visiting Chicago.

We really loved the Walt Disney Archives exp! It’s definitely a museum for all ages. Be sure to have plenty of time because it’s huge!

An outstanding place to visit and ranks up there with the Chicago Institute of Art. Make sure to give yourself at least 1/2 a day for your visit, if possible.

Not to be missed! Tons of stuff to see, do and experience, with or without kids. The exhibits are well maintained, not run down like other Science museums. The U-505 exhibit and tour are excellent. Best science museum I’ve ever been to.

How We Helped

The Museum of Science and Industry Submarine project was one of the most challenging and exciting environments Lakeshore has ever had the privilege to participate in. The Lakeshore team went to work each day with the full knowledge that history was being recreated and we are honored to have been a part of it all. We participated in all aspects of construction, from building the various exhibits, which included many actual artifacts, to the interactive displays museum visitors are able to experience, and everything in between. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we put our hearts and souls into the months long project it made us even more proud to be Americans. Our team still gets goose bumps every time we go to the museum and relive the days we worked on such an amazing piece of history! And, were thankful that project opened the doors for us to work on so many other important environments.

What We Did

Lightswitch Architectural re-illuminated the exhibit with new low-maintenance, energy-efficient lighting that enhances and ensures the consistency of the guest experience. Working with the existing light design, we updated the exhibits outdated lighting technology to improve the overall experience and reduce energy use and maintenance. We cleaned and relamped the existing theatrical lighting luminaires that light the sub, adding new effects that replicate the authentic look of a marine maintenance hangar. The existing track fixtures were relamped with new digitally controlled LED PAR lamps that were color tuned to complement each unique aspect of the exhibit. We also replaced the T12 fluorescents that backlit the graphic panels with new LED lights to make the graphics pop.

What It Was

A critical piece of WWII history, the U-505 submarine has been on display at the Museum of Science and Industry since the 1950s. The capture of the German submarine by the Allied forces marked a turning point in the war, and the salvaged sub has stood as a memorial to the many sailors who sacrificed their lives in WWI and WWII. One of MSIs most popular attractions, the exhibit includes interactive stations, archival media, videos and artifacts, as well as the restored sub, which guests can tour.
