David Carlson pondered the items in the glass case for a while before making his selection: a fossilized shark tooth.

The Edina 10-year-old, accompanied by his mother, took the $15 tooth to the register at the Explore Store at the Science Museum of Minnesota in downtown St. Paul and bought it with his own money. David, a shark enthusiast, said he would add the specimen to his collection of about 20 shark teeth.

This ones extinct, so I went with that, David said. Theyre cool animals, and theyre not, like, really scary theyre just like other creatures, except they need to find food.

Win-win: a satisfying purchase for David, and mission accomplished for the Explore Store. Like most museum gift shops, it sells products intended to advance the mission of the museum itself.

Thats kind of why we exist, said Steve Fegley, the museums director of retail operations. The gift shops at museums are typically extensions of the museums. Visitors can come to the shop and keep learning, even after their museum visit is done.

Affiliates Celebrate Reopening Of Harvard Art Museums

Harvard affiliates and Cambridge art lovers are eagerly visiting the Harvard Art Museums, which reopened in early September, nearly 18 months after shutting their doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After opening to Harvard affiliates on Sept. 1, Harvards three art museums The Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum invited the general public back to their galleries on Sept. 4.

Its been very sad not to have the students in the space, because they animate the space, HAM director Martha Tedeschi said. Theyre a big part of why were here and of our legacy as a teaching museum, so it was super exciting to have the first students come in.

The museums have made several changes as the gallery reopens. Admission is now free for the general public on Sundays, part of an attempt to increase museum accessibility to non-Harvard affiliates.

Tedeschi said the program was immediately popular, and sold out during its first week.

Although the museums doors are open for visitors, the gift shop, like several other Square businesses, is struggling with a national labor shortage and remains closed. The museums cafe has likewise not reopened due to health concerns.

Tedeschi said the museums have decided to prioritize their educational services over staffing common spaces like the cafés.

If coffee and the shop have to come a little bit later, that’s the way it’s gonna have to be, Tedeschi said.

Gift Package #: The Great Gift Variety Pack

A Variety Pack of Experience Gifts

In all honesty, I ran out of steam here and still had several really good memberships to list, but this mixed bag of memberships will keep your family entertained all year long. They would each also make great stand-alone gifts.

    1. The Science Museum of Minnesota

In the past, I have considered the Science Museum to be mostly out of my budget but Ive discovered memberships are really quite affordable and something we use often. The Science Museum also offers needs based discounts. If you are even on WIC or Medical Assistance, you qualify for discounted prices that bring membership down to below the price of most the other museums Ive featured. Two perks I love about the Science Museum are 1) the discounted parking. Often when I have to attend something else in the area, the rest of the family goes to the Science Museum and we take advantage of discounted parking 2) I love the Omnitheater admission. This makes for a cheap Friday night out with the family and, if the toddler doesnt want to sit through a show , I can take her to the museum while the rest of the family catches the show.

Your grandchildren will look forward to your visits so you can enjoy your gift together plus they will enjoy it with their parents the rest of the year. A Museum Designed To Entertain Little Kids

I was recently in Winnipeg and visited the Manitoba Museum. It reminded me of what the science Museum of Minnesota used to be: A spectacular and comprehensive display of history in nature, provided in an engaging and detailed format. The redesign of SMM a few decades ago gave a beautiful building with spectacular views of the river, but dumbed down the science to simple, spectacular Exhibits to satisfy todays low attention spans. My daughter certainly enjoyed going to the science Museum of Minnesota until she was 11 or 12, but after that the repetition and simplicity no longer held her interest. Its sad to say, but this format simply reflects the loss of interest, Knowledge and understanding of science in current American culture.

Excellent, interactive museum about all things science. Fossils, space, light, magnets, perspective, math, etc. Best part was the sports science. Race a T Rex! Have to book times to keep numbers low due to covid, but this meant the hordes were out as well. Win!

Were glad you love the Explore Store! Its always stocked with the latest science books, fun kits for kids, exclusive dino gear, and so many other items to inspire curiosity. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us.

Harvard Art Museums Receive Important Gift Of American Silver

Joseph Richardson Sr., The Hannah Emelen Logan Teapot, ca. 1745, silver and wood .

    From the press release . . .

The Harvard Art Museums announce a transformative gift of 21 works of 18th-century American silver from the collection of Daniel A. Pollack and Susan F. Pollack. The gift comprises a range of finely made vessels and table implements intended for domestic use, including cups, bowls, spoons, tankards, and teapots crafted by noted silversmiths from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Trenton. There is also a stunning caudle cup, an example of ecclesiastical silver made by Edward Winslow and believed to have been used during communion at First Congregational Church in Milford, Connecticut. The Pollacks gift strengthens the museums noted holdings of 17th- to 20th-century silver and comes at a time when curators and postdoctoral fellows are working to reimagine the balance among paintings, sculptures, and design objects on view in the galleries.

Paul Revere Jr., Two ragout spoons, 1786, silver .

Edward Winslow, Caudle cup, 1707, silver .

We are thrilled to be able to honor Dans legacy Im grateful to Susan for her gracious partnership and support, said Martha Tedeschi, the Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director of the Harvard Art Museums.
