From straight ahead to free jazz, bebop to swing, HIGH are bringing Atlanta the best of the best in the world of jazz, and their summer line-up is exquisite!
The incredible nights will feature several music acts, all scattered around the iconic art museum, with two musical areas for your entertainment, including an enchanting outdoor space .

Fundraisers At The High

Highball Highs annual fundraising mixology competition! Atlantas foremost bartenders will compete head-to-head and flex their imaginations to bring you their most creative cocktails, inspired by an annual theme. The top three bartenders will each claim a cash prize, trophy, and bragging rights as one of Atlantas top mixologists.

Let me elaborate, the High is one of the best museums in the country. Its in Midtown Atlanta with a prime location near the Arts Center Marta Station so getting there is incredibly easy! The High Museum of Art connects with audiences with distinguished collections, a dynamic schedule of special exhibitions, and engaging community-focused programs. With a collection of more than 17,000 works of art, burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, including paintings, sculpture, new media and design a growing collection of African art, and significant holdings of European paintings and works on paper. The High is dedicated to reflecting the diversity of its communities and offering a variety of exhibitions and educational programs that engage visitors with the world of art, the lives of artists and the creative process.
I also took some time to explore the exhibits at the High and every time I thought I had seen it allI saw another amazing piece of art. This museum took my breath away time and time again. My favorite exhibit was With Drawn Arms: Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith. There just isnt enough words that I can use to describe how inspired I was from this exhibit and from learning more about Tommie Smith.

Jazz Bassist Will Gobles High Museum Homecoming
In the Jazz Times review of his debut album, bassist Will Gobles original ballad, Blessed Unrest is compared to classic collaborations by Stan Getz, Chet Baker and Bill Evans. Late Thursday night, Goble, 29, was attempting to articulate the compliment over the phone when his voice suddenly trails off.
Im sorry, Goble explains. The drummer just shot me with a pellet gun.
The armed musician in question is Atlanta drummer Dave Potter, who has been playing with Goble since they were both high school kids obsessed with learning jazz. The brotherly bond will be back on display tonight at the High Museum at the Friday Jazz series from 5 to 10 as Goble and Potter officially unveil tunes from Gobles debut album, Some Stories Tell No Lies, a project that was produced here in Atlanta and underwritten in part via a Kickstarter campaign financed by local fans.
In the recording sessions here for Stories, Goble had one rule: no edits, no computer punch ins to cover up mistakes. Im just more comfortable playing in the same room together in a more natural and live set up, he says. It creates a more honest listening experience. Throughout the album, there are these little momentary stories that tell you about weakness, about flaws or a strength. In a solo, you can hear someone who is confident or when someone isnt. You can hear if theyre curious and you can hear them taking risks.

Here Are A Few Things You Should Know About Attending Friday Jazz At The High Museum Of Art:
Take the train or be prepared to pay $16 for parking.
Make sure you charge your phone battery because youll want to take pictures of the art work.
Wear comfy shoes! Although I love these suede booties my knees did not.
Friday Jazz is included in the price of museum admission. At the time of this post admission is $14.50.

Friday Jazz At The High
Experience evening access to the Museum as the sounds of live jazz surround you. Enjoy a drink and head to the galleries as you explore the Highs permanent collection and special exhibitions. Curated by Sander Pinheiro, the event will feature two musical areas where musicians will play throughout the evening, layering notes and improvising melodies.

High Museum Jazz Night
On the third Friday of every month, enjoy music, drinks, and art at the High Museums Jazz Night event. Each month features a different style of jazz from straight ahead to free jazz, bebop to swing, and more. The event takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Pick your date up after work, turn the radio to 91.9 WCLK, Atlantas jazz station, and head over to the High.
Seating for Friday Jazz Night begins at 6 p.m., and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event includes evening access to the museum as the sounds of live jazz music surround you. Two musical areas are set up, in both the Atrium and on Orkin Terrace, so you can enjoy the music throughout the evening. Drinks and light food fare are available.
Parking for Friday Jazz can be a challenge, so pre-pay to park in the Woodruff Arts Center deck, which is below the High. The parking entrance is right across from the MARTA Arts Center Station. There are limited spaces, so do yourself a favor and pre-pay to guarantee a spot.
If you are early, pop into Twelve Eighty for some apps. They have a Late Night Menu for Jazz Nights thats available until 9 p.m. This sleek restaurant is located on Sifly Piazza, just as you come off the elevator from the parking deck. Plus, their full bar features wines by the glass in several varietals, hand-crafted cocktails, and ice cold beer. Note there are no drinks allowed in the gallery.

Friday Jazz At High Museum
One of our pet peeves is the presumptuous museum that only caters to daytime visitors.
Museum administrators must think that everyone can get to a museum between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. any day of the week.
Another assumption is that visitors want to navigate past yellow school buses and packs of students. Or, on weekends, squeeze past hordes of adults, all vying for a few, spare hours to experience visual art. That is 20th century thinking for a 21st century world. Especially when the metaverse threatens to put museums out of business.
So, when we visit the website for Atlantas High Museum, we get disheartened by the posted operating hours. Were sure the response is, But they dont come at night. We dont want to hear it. We have marketed many non-profit arts organizations. Do better.
All that being said, the High Museum does stay open late one day a month for what it calls Friday Jazz. If you look hard enough on the website for the leading art museum in the southeastern United States you can even find details. No admission for museum members , Not-yet-members pay. Docent tours.
Oct. 21 features jazz artistGrant Green Jr. Multi-instrumentalist Vinnie DAgostino will perform during the Nov. 18, 22 Friday Jazz event These programs appear to be the only late-night Friday events scheduled for the rest of the year and into 2023. Sigh.
