American Visionary Art Museum Wins ‘Arch Madness’ Competition

THE LABELS ARE MOSQUITOES buzzing around a rosy, vulnerable body of work: alien art, batty art,self-taught art, intuitive art, anonymous art, obsessive art, spontaneous art, visionary art, prisoner art,art brut, andwatch out, this ones ready to stingoutsider art. Outsider artists, a small group of categorically disadvantaged people, are those who are thought to make outsider art.

However, if you look at the transhistorical culture of the world and not merely at products of the last few centuries of the museum church-state, youll see that its really the other way around: a small group of categorically advantaged people, insider artists, make insider art. Insider artists have usually taken part in some kind of expensive training ritual they may be classified as Insiders by their demonstrable obsession with rank, sales, Western history, andheres their connection to the larger groupimmortality, with the encasement of spirit through the fashioning of an object.

The museum has a collection of almost 4,000 works, but its first show, The Tree of Life, borrows greatly from collectors and a few dealers. The staff-light museum has made the choice, at least for now, of using guest curators and mounting one theme show every six months. Writer-photographer Roger Manley selected the nearly 400 works in the inaugural exhibition, but the only thing they have in common is that they are made of, or picture, wood or other tree-derived products.

Dont Miss The Gift Shop

A very unique art museum. This is not your typical art museum, and even if you are not an art lover you will find yourself getting drawn in. Save time for the gift shop, like no other museum shop you have ever seen.

I love taking out of town guests to the AVAM and then up Fed Hill for a great view of the city. The visionary has so much interesting art, I am always there when they change their collection. On the surface, most of the art just looks nuts, but when you actually sit and read every artist’s backstory, the works become so much more fascinating. Also: Best. Giftshop. Ever. And Giftshop is free if you don’t want to go to the museum.

WHAT a Great Place!! Fun fun fun!! Can’t wait to go back with friends and family! look for groupon to save $$ on entry. You can easily spend 3 hours here and not see everything!

Quirky Fascinating Museum And Gift Shop

While we were not the typical patrons of this museum as viewed on our weekend visit , but everyone in the family found something to like about this unusual museum. The art was so diverse and reading about these lesser-known artists and their unique situations really made us appreciate the works so much more. My husband was thrilled to finally see the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre automata collection that is now housed at AVAM. This exhibit, located in one of the annex buildings, is interactive to allow guests to activate the automata.I’ve never seen such a huge variety of unusual items in the gift shop, and all at very, very reasonable prices. Highly recommended for those with an open mind to creative art that might not fit the mold of a traditional art museum.

Open your mind and come to this extraordinary museum, with visionary, creative work…and more than a few displays that are just plan fun . Topping it off…maybe one of the wildest, kitzchiest gift shops you’ll ever experience.

I’m not an art person but I went to check it out. It is not the best location because it is located on the other side of the inner harbor. It is not a bad walk on a nice day. It has very nice exhibits and nice staff members. No photography inside.

What It’s Like

A creative urban wonderland, the museum itself is an architectural oddity, featuring curved hallways, stairwells and rounded gallery walls. The works on display include embroidery, graffiti, diorama, film, sculpture, and multimedia. Pieces of art are created from unusual mediums such as toothpicks, or a picture painted with mustard and ketchup. Each piece at the museum tells a unique story about its creator and encourages you to rethink the definition of fine art.
