Nestled in the heart of Renos Midtown District, The Discovery Museum is Nevadas largest childrens museum and hands-on science center, connecting a curious public with scientific inquiry and innovation.
While The Discovery launched as a childrens museumand certainly aims its experiences squarely at the kind of curiosity that many of us grown-ups envyit has gradually metamorphosed into a haven for innovative, immersive exploration that appeals to anyone with an inquiring mind.

Since opening to the public in 2011, The Discovery has solidified its place in our region as the home for informal science, technology, engineering, art and math learning. Through hands-on galleries and exhibitions, and a robust array of educational programs, The Discovery connects learners of all ages with opportunities to explore a wide variety of ever-changing topics, all designed to inspire curiosity and further investigation.
Originally founded as a childrens museum, The Discovery has quickly transformed into a world-class science center serving much more than families with young children. This transformation is driven by the knowledge that the museums potential to make a larger impact in our region requires serving a much broader demographic. By becoming Northern Nevadas hub for fun, hands-on science exploration for all ages, The Discovery augments our communitys educational offerings and plays a critical role in the cultural and economic growth of our community.

The Discovery’s Life In A Nutshell
Sinclair has been working at the museum since April 1, 2013. When discussing his position, he said he was blown away by the dedication of the community.
The knowledge that The Discovery would get to play a key role in the educational and cultural changes happening in a community like this were just simply just too good to pass up, Sinclair said.
After being hired, Sinclair was told The Discovery needed donations. He set out on a mission to raise half a million dollars in five months time, a goal that the community helped him fulfill ahead of schedule.
We have literally doubled the amount of exhibits in our inventory in ten years time, said Sinclair.
The total attendance since their doors opened in 2011 is close to 1.7 million. So far this year, The Discovery has seen 41,782 visitors.
Besides field trips and other museum experiences, camps are also offered for out-of-school sessions for students of all ages. Since The Discovery has begun to outgrow their space, off-site camps are added during the summer.
What To Look Forward To
The Discovery will get a new temporary exhibition in September called Survival of the Slowest. It will be the largest temporary exhibition ever hosted at the museum and will contain 10 live animals, including a three-toed sloth what Sinclair refers to as the star of the show.
The Discovery is already featuring the bilingual exhibition “Energy/Energía,” which features 18 hands-on exhibits focused on energy generation, use, and storage.
Besides the future of exhibitions, Sinclair also laid out the plan for whats next for the museum.
Their goals include reaching out to Latinx communities and celebrating members who have grown up and are now visiting with their own kids.
Sinclair said it’s important to show the community that The Discovery can be educational for adults, too.
One of the biggest challenges The Discovery faces, Sinclair says, is trying to stay ahead of the wear and tear that comes with being a hands-on museum.
I want you all to think about your house. Invite 200,000 people into your house each year, your carpets are going to wear, your coffee tables are going to get some stains on it. When we are inviting visitors to touch our stuff and interact with them, thats millions of cycles on our equipment a year, Sinclair explained.
Even though the pandemic was an unexpected challenge that they continue to overcome, Sinclair sees it as an opportunity to use their museum to hope for a better scientific future.

Energy/energa: The Latest Permanent Exhibit At The Discovery Museum
RENO, Nev. – The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum has opened its newest exhibit. Energy/Energía gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the future of sustainable energy .
The bilingual exhibition provides a hands-on experience and explains how clean energy can impact our planet if used as a major alternative. Energy/Energía was made possible through a generous grant from Tesla.
Patrick Turner, Chief Advancement Officer at The Discovery shared what an exhibit like this can provide to the community.
We know the future of energy generation storage and use is going to have to change in order to help the planet survive, and so this exhibition helps people understand the things we can do individually and professionally to help make that happen, Turner said.
The museum will be open seven days a week starting this Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the inner workings of vehicles and the systems that make them go, turn and stop. Hands-on activities include an auto parts petting zoo, an air bag demonstration, exploration of horn circuitry, an auto paint shop, in addition to the opportunity to build a NAPA derby car, an introduction to basic car care and an exploration of hydraulic powder.
The Discovery is thrilled to partner with regional NAPA Elite Member AutoCare Centers to provide mechanics young and old with hands-on experience with cars, said Mat Sinclair, President/CEO of The Discovery. Automobiles encompass speed, power and performance, all of which include elements of science and technology, making it a perfect fit for our museum.
NAPA Car Care Day is presented with support from local NAPA Elite Member AutoCare Centers including A Master Mechanic, Allens Automotive, Arrow Automotive, Levrett Transmission, LT Automotive, Pro 1 Automotive, Roy Fosters Automotive and Southgate Automotive.
