Having originally purchased Whitney Plantation with what he concedes were purely real estate-based motives, Cummings helped transform the derelict site, located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge along the Mississippi River, into a one-of-a-kind Black history museum focused entirely on slavery.On arrival, guests are allocated a card detailing the name and story of an enslaved person. Visitors are shown around the very grounds on which slaves toiled in the Southern heat to cultivate sugar and rice during the 18th and 19th centuries. Original slave cabins, the Big House, and several powerful memorials are part of a moving, deeply insightful tour.

The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration is located near the former site of one of the most prominent slave auctions in the country and just steps away from the rail station that trafficked tens of thousands of enslaved people during the height of the slave trade. With Montgomerys proximity to the fertile Black Belt region and its plantations in need of workers, the city became the capital of the domestic slave trade in Alabama. After the Civil War, slave ownership ended with emancipation, but racial inequality and injustice did not. The Legacy Museum, through its immersive exhibits and videos, gives visitors the opportunity to both explore the past and reflect on its impact on society today.
On entering the museum, visitors are confronted with replicas of slave pens and, through sights and sounds, experience what it would have been like to be imprisoned and waiting for the auction block. Narration taken from first-person accounts of enslaved people brings a sobering authenticity to the exhibits. Beyond slavery, the displays and visuals based on extensive research of the terrorism of lynching and the dehumanizing force of Jim Crow laws engage visitors in understanding the legacy of Americas racial injustice. They also provide a link from the past to current social issues such as mass incarceration of African-Americans and police violence.

On April 4th, 1968, the morning after delivering his well-remembered Promised Land speech, civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Dr. Kings murder sent shockwaves across the world, but rather than break the will of activists, it galvanized Black Americans to continue their demand for freedom. The National Civil Rights Museum is located steps from the site of MLKs death. The Silent Witnesses Enslavement Project In Lynchburg Virginia
The Legacy Museum of African American History and the Lynchburg Museum System are pleased to announce a new collaborative public history project called Silent Witnesses: The History of Enslavement in Lynchburg, Virginia. The mission of the project is to document the enslaved experience of people of African descent and associated sites in Lynchburg, Virginia, and educate citizens of all ages about this history. The two partner museums will lead the creation of a series of historical markers throughout the city, as well as a digital archive of primary and secondary sources that explore the full history of enslavement in the Hill City.
Silent Witnesses was approved by both the Legacy Museum of African American History Board of Directors and the Lynchburg Museum Advisory Board in the fall of 2021. Valeria P. Chambers, President of the Legacy Museum Board of Directors, stated, The mission of the Legacy Museum of African American History is to foster and stimulate an appreciation of African American contributions in Lynchburg and surrounding counties/cities. This joint project with the Lynchburg Museum will document, memorialize, and make publicly visible in our streetscape and online the sites, the lives and contributions of African American enslaved people in Lynchburg, Virginia, that have been largely invisible.

We do not allow photographs of any kind inside the Museum and ask that all visitors turn their cell phones completely off while inside the Museum. While visitors to the Memorial are welcome to respectfully document their experience with still photography using a cell phone or hand-held digital camera, we require professional photographers and press to contact us for permission in advance of scheduling any photo shoots on location.

The National Memorial For Peace And Justice
More than 4,400 African American men, women, and children were hanged, burned alive, shot, drowned, and beaten to death by white mobs between 1877 and 1950.
