    Traditional Or True Colored Pencil

Regular colored pencil has an oil or wax-based binder which helps it to stick to the paper surface. Thats why they are great for dry layering and blending.

Regular pencils can be blended using alcohol, colorless blender pencil or with a white pencil.

These colors dont bleed. So you can use the pencils on cartridge paper and in coloring books with prints on both sides.

    Make Your Own Colour Chart

For your knowledge, its advisable to draw up your own colour chart so you can get to know the actual colours of your coloured pencils. You will then see how your pencil perfoms on the papers that you use for your drawings.

However, it takes a long time to make your own chart, and its usually something we dont get around to doing.

If youve made your own charts thats great. But as is practical, you might also have your charts in one physical place while you draw in another. You need to have access to the colours where you are hopefully youll be there with internet access and your mobile device.

You can use the downloadable PDFs available for purchase, and mix the colour families to make harmonious colour relationships that you can use in your art and craft. Our post about colour harmonies gives more information about which colour families make up these relationships.

    Rating:

In our opinion, Museum Aquarelle pencils from Caran d’Ache could well be the best watercolor pencils available, bar none. The high concentration of extra fine pigments with excellent water-solubility rivals even the finest artist watercolors, let alone watercolor pencils. When drawn on dry the pencils perform as well as the very best non watersoluble colors, such as Luminance, which is surprising as sometimes watercolor pencils do not appear with as much color brilliance as their non-water-soluble counterparts. When a wet brush is dragged across the pencil marks, the color that disperses in watery pools is lustrous and brilliant. Lesser pencils demonstrate a much lower concentration of color in washes. Use alongside watercolor to apply very fine detail to your work, or use alone with the freedom to apply very dilute color as well as very thick bold undiluted marks, all with the same pencil. A truly revolutionary drawing and painting medium that you will love using.

    Usability And Durability 5/5

    Caran d

The Caran dAche Aquarelle Museum watercolor pencils are extremely smooth and output is buttery. Lightfastness issues arent a concern and the color intensity can easily be altered with additional passes or simply adding some water. The pencils are well-made and the lead is quite strong and easy to sharpen to whatever point you need with a sharpener.

You can also put on multiple layers, even varying colors, without worry. You can tell that Caran dAche has a good understanding of what needs to go into colored pencil lead. As we mentioned above, another great feature is that you can use this with or without water. While you will have much more dramatic blending with the inclusion of water or another type of solvent, even when dry they perform quite well.

    Aquarelle Or Watercolor Pencil

Watercolor pencils have a binder that dissolves in water, releasing and dispersing the pigment. You cant blend and layer these like regular color pencils instead, they create some unique watercolor effects.

If you are new to water based colors, then these can be your stepping stone to mastering watercolor paint.

    Using A Watercolor Pencil

Tip: Use hot pressed, 300 GSM watercolor paper for best effect. Otherwise theyll bleed and buckle the surface when activated.

Watercolor Pencils vs. Traditional Watercolor Paints

    • Unlike watercolor paint, these are much more portable.
    • You can sharpen them to a point for detailed work.
    • Finally, they are much easier to control.

Caran D’ache Museum Aquarelle Watercolor Pencils Review

The pencils come in either a strong box or a gorgeous wooden case. Both have molded slots for each pencil which means that they are well-protected and look very attractive. The pencil itself is unique in that it is wrapped in a matte black outside varnish with the base being color-matching to the color of the pencil. The necessary pencil information in including brand, type, and color are stamped on the outside. In a world that consists of pencils with bright barrels, it is refreshing to find an example where a darker, more professional approach is taken.

The Best Coloured Pencils I’ve Ever Used

    Caran d

I ordered the landscape set last year and was impatient to get my hands on more colours as soon as the loose stock became available. These truly are amazing pencils with thick rich colour that washes out perfectly. I have been using them dry in a black sketchbook and using the white as a base for the colours which really makes them pop out from the page and positively glow with light.VALERIE GARDINER on 31 Jan 2014

Using The Aquarelle As A Base For Coloured Pencil Portraits

The tonal underlayers on the body are created much darker than colours seen in the reference photo. This allows the lighter tones to appear brighter when applied over the top. The same application will used on the face. I will use the Luminance pencils to create the fine details only, reducing wastefulness. To emphasise the highlights in the fur, I use the Derwent Drawing Chinese white pencil. I have found that it is one of the brightest whites available. See examples of how other whites compare on the coloured pencil comparison page. The dark base helps to illuminate the white fur, adding to the impact of the finished product.
