Smithsonian Magazine’s 17th annual Museum Day will take place Sept. 18 at select museums in Tampa Bay and in other cities across the country.
This year’s theme, “Experience America,” celebrates “the return to, and resurgence of, our country’s diverse cultural experiences,” following closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release.

How To Get A Ticket For Free Museum Day Entry
In order to snag a ticket, people have to select a museum and download one from Smithsonian magazine. Tickets will be available starting Aug. 18. You can only download one ticket per email address, but each one allows entry for two people.
Tickets may be free, but take note that many participating museums will have varying COVID-19 safety precautions in place this year. Check the museum website before you go.

Glazer Childrens Museum: This museum is ideal for young children. Located in downtown Tampa the museum offers a great interactive style to keep children learning and having fun. Their calendar is packed with fun activities, camps, etc.
Details: Every first Tuesday of the month, the Childrens Board of Hillsborough County sponsors a free museum entrance from Noon to 7 p.m. Food is sold inside the museum. With over 1,000 museums expected to participate, visitors are bound to find one they will enjoy. Topics and themes range from air and space, art, children, general history, science and natural history museums all ready for a flood of eager visitors. The full list of museums can on be viewed on the Smithsonian magazine website, with new ones signing up every day.
The Smithsonian already has museums open to the public for free every day, such as The National Museum of Natural History,National Air and Space Museum and National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Museum Day brings possibilities to visit other unique finds and hidden gems that aren’t normally free.
Check out the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York and walk the entire length of an aircraft carrier. Or enrich your mind with art at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, Florida, the largest in the area. In Alabama you can go to USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and step right onto the QQII battleship USS Alabama and submarine USS Drum, both national historical landmarks.

The Polk Museum of Art is participating in Museum Day Live, however admission is FREE EVERY DAY so you can visit anytime! The Polk Museum of Art is a teaching museum that seeks to enhance lives through inspirational and engaging art experiences for all. It is the largest and only nationally accredited visual arts organization in Polk County and the only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum in Central Florida. New exhibitions rotate through the main galleries, and you can also see some of the permanent collections on display. Our personal favorite is the childrens gallery. Admission to the Polk Museum of Art is always free, memberships are available for special events, perks, and reciprocal admission.
Explorations V Childrens Museum and Bok Tower Gardens have participated in previous years, but not in 2021. Bok Tower Gardens is offering Free Admission on Wawa Free Fridays on August 27 and September 24. Free Admission On Museum Day At Orlando Institutions
Looking for a way to make your weekend brighter? Grab an education at one of more than a dozen Orlando area museums offering free admission for Museum Day.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, some of your favorite Central Florida cultural institutions will open their doors in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
The timing works out great for local art fans. The Orlando Museum of Art and the Mennello Museum of American Art are opening a new joint exhibition, Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers.
The Cornell Museum of Fine Arts in Winter Park, which is participating, also opens new exhibitions this weekend, including African American Art in the 20th Century and Ut Pictura Poesis: Walt Whitman and the Poetry of Art.
Other participating museums include the Orange County History Center, the Museum of Art DeLand and Bok Tower Gardens. Some museums, such as the Cornell and the Hand Art Center in DeLand are free every day.
To go, attendees must download a ticket to the museum of their choosing from the website smithsonianmag.com. There, you can find the closest participating attraction to you or see if the one you want most is one the list.

Free Museum Day Returns To Tampa Bay On Saturday
After the pandemic canceled Free Museum Day in 2020, it returns on Saturday. And like years before, there are two ways to visit participating Tampa Bay museums for free.
Smithsonian magazines Free Museum Day includes venues across the nation and locally. Tickets must be reserved online first.
Other venues are also hosting Free Museum Day, but are not affiliated with the magazines. The Dalí Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg are participating in Arts Alive Free Museum Day. The James Museum and Imagine Museum are hosting Free Museum Day, while the Ringling has dubbed Saturday Extraordinary Experience Day. Tickets must be reserved online in advance on each venues website.
Like past years, there are a few catches. The Dalí Museum deal is offered to Pinellas County residents only. At the Museum of Fine Arts, special exhibitions are for members only, but guests can view the permanent collection. The free pass to Imagine Museum is limited to the first floor galleries.
In addition to the Dalí’s permanent collection, guests can view The Woman who Broke Boundaries: Photographer Lee Miller and Aimé Césaire: Poetry, Surrealism and Négritude.
