Henry Benjamin Greenberg was born in New York City on January 1, 1911. In 1925, 14 year- old Greenberg was a player on the Washington Avenue Annex Settlement House baseball team, which won the Bronx championship. Years later, Greenberg won a scholarship to New York University, but he quit after his first term to play baseball full time.

Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933 as a first baseman, and helped them win their first American League pennant in 25 years. The Tigers were champions again the following year, and Hank won the American Leagues Most Valuable Player award by a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers Association he won it again in 1940 after he had been switched to left field.

After Hank Greenberg declined to play in an important game on Yom Kippur in 1934, Edgar Guest published a poem, the last lines of which are: We shall miss him on the infield and shall miss him at the bat, but hes true to his religion and I honor him for that.

Hockey Legend Enters Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame

These remarks were delivered on July 4 as part of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Wingate Institute, in Netanya, Israel, for my late uncle, Hy Buller, who played for the New York Rangers hockey team from 1950 to 1954.

I have a photo hanging in my office of a curious little boy playing outdoors a photo of me at 3 years old. In this photo, Im proudly wearing a New York Rangers cardigan sweater, a loving gift from my Uncle Hy.

My Uncle Hy died in 1968, when I was still a teenager and, for much of my youth, he and his family lived in Cleveland, far from my hometown of Vancouver. I really got to know him best while penning an article about him for The Scribe, the journal of the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia. This article, aptly titled A mensch on defence, was published in 2002.

In writing A mensch on defence, I reconnected with Hys three sons, Bob, Bruce and Jeff, who provided valuable information about their father. My cousins also put me in touch with legendary hockey players who had shared the ice with Hy: Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe, Terrible Ted Lindsay and goalie Johnny Bower. Each had warm memories of Hy and spoke highly of his abilities.

Winters in Saskatoon were devoted to hockey. Like many boys his age, Hy spent most of his time outside of school hours vying to be king of the ice on his uncles vacant lot, flooded and frozen each year.

In 1989, along with my sister, I represented the United States at the Maccabiah Games for swimming. The Maccabiah Games, the third largest world sporting competition, are the Jewish Olympics and are held every four years in Israel. A very international contingent participates, with athletes competing from 50 countries. It was an amazing, life-changing experience.

Prior to the opening ceremonies, US athletes from all of the different sports were brought together for breakout sessions. We were arranged in small groups to discuss all matters of being a Jewish athlete. I was amazed to hear the stories from others that were similar to my own. They too, had experienced disparaging comments and felt the same shame I had at being Jewish.

The most amazing part of the entire trip, though, was walking into the stadium during the opening ceremonies. I was surrounded by thousands of Jews from all over the world. All in this one place to celebrate sports and Judaism. It was a revelation.

And then, they played Hatikvah, the Israeli National Anthem, the words to which I knew well from my years attending a Jewish Day School. I was overwhelmed with pride and decided I would never hide being Jewish again.

Former Uc Great Laub To Be Inducted Into Jewish Hall Of Fame

The only student-athlete in NCAA history to play six varsity years, according to UC, and the first basketball assistant coach at UC, former Bearcat great Jack “Black Cat” Laub will earn induction into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on Sept. 14 in Commack, New York.

Laub, who played basketball for two seasons at the City College of New York prior to serving in World War II, came to UC in 1946. Under Mid-American Conference rules that allowed war veterans to play college sports, gave Laub the opportunity to help guide the Bearcats to four consecutive MAC titles and a combined 77-27 record from 1947-1950 under UC head coach John Weithe.

Laub joined fellow UC great Dick Dallmer as the first two Bearcats selected in the NBA Draft in 1950. Chosen by the Baltimore Bullets, Laub was traded to the Minneapolis Lakers and eventually landed with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Basketball League where he helped the franchise win two regular-season championships from 1951-52.

Appointed by Wiethe, Laub became UC’s first basketball assistant coach in 1951 and helped direct the Bearcats to their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament that same year. As head scout, Laub is also credited with suggesting Weithe give a scholarship to Jack Twyman, who eventually became an All-American at UC and was later inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

WINNIPEG Goldberg, Gould, and Bloom not Jewish? There goes the name-game out the window at least when it comes to identifying NFLathletes by their surnames.

Identifying Jews, whether in the movies or on the playing field, has always been a challenging task, especially when for a variety of reasons they have opted to change their names. For instance, did you know that Lee Grants real name was Lyova Geisman? Or that Jane Seymour was Joyce Penelope Frankenburg that comedian George Burnss true moniker was Nathan Birnbaum and that Bobby Zimmerman became Bob Dylan? Go figure.

Identifying Jews in the National Football League is no walk in the park these days, either. But it has less to do with name-altering than it has to do with defining Who is a Jew?

Liberal, Conservative, and Orthodox Jews all have their own criteria for defining who is Jewish, and that often leads to confusion, especially when some of todays athletes are of mixed parentage. It is, of course, less of a dilemma if a player has a Jewish mother, but even then, there is always the possibility of parental conversion . Consider also that a child may never have been raised as a Jew, regardless of the religion of the childs mother or father.
