I plan to go to the museum between 5pm to 8:45pm on Wed. Is there any free street parking nearby? Is it safe to walk around that area at night? Thanks in advance!

No issues of safety besides normal common sense. At that time, most street parking in the area will be permit or short term meter. If attending the museum, park in their garage.

Also at that time, on street parking will all be taken by residents, and the only other on-street parking would be by the waterworks, which is in back of the museum. All-in-all, just bite the bullet on the cost, and park in their garage.

This is a review for a parking business near Art Museum District, Philadelphia, PA:

“It’s a pretty serviceable lot next to Drexel medicine – lots tiny but the rates are serviceable. The parking a little compact, as you zigzag up and down the structure in one lane traffic but it’s decent enough.Weird edge case that wasn’t in my favor – came in on a Saturday looking for parking, but for some event or something the lot was already full. Pretty much every lot I’ve ever been to lets you leave for free if you leave in under 15 minutes – which you’d expect since you couldn’t park! Lo and behold not even 10 minutes in trying to leave I get charged the full $10 weekend rate. It’s not a problem that affects many people but left a bad taste in my mouth and not consumer friendly. The ticket booths looked on the older side, but definitely something they could address in the future.”

In an effort to expand parking to accommodate its growing membership, the Philadelphia Museum of Art commissioned Atkin Olshin Schade Architects and Walker to design a 442 space below-grade parking structure.

Due to the aesthetic sensitivity of the site, PMA decided to build the structure into a hillside and place a sculpture garden on its roof. Although visually concealed, the perimeter areaways provide light and ventilation, permitting the garage to maintain its open parking structure code classification.

Walker defined the parking supply/demand and the financial impacts for PMA, provided functional design, code assistance, vehicle wayfinding, PARCS and operational consulting.

The Parking Access and Revenue Control System is a central pay-on-foot system with cashiers in the museum, and POF machines in the sculpture garden elevator lobby and at exits.

Vehicular circulation is created by two-way traffic on a single helix with two access points.

Woodmere Art Museum Green Parking Lot Conversion

    Client: Location:

NTM Engineering, Inc. was contracted by the Woodmere Art Museum to design Green Stormwater Infrastructure for a new parking lot at this museum located in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. The project was funded through a Pennsylvania state redevelopment grant and a Pennsylvania Water Department Stormwater Management Incentives Program grant, necessitating extensive design and permitting coordination.

The purpose of the project was to alleviate pervasive flooding and replace the existing parking lot. The new parking lot consists of a combination of porous asphalt and standard asphalt pavement and includes subsurface stormwater infiltration pits. The project also involved the installation of a vegetated bioswale and native meadow plantings for stormwater management. Off-site storm drains and regenerative step-pool water quality system were required to safely pass large flood events. In addition, the project includes a statue designed to reuse stormwater in a fountain.
