The New Museum Is World Class But Many Find It A Tough Place To Work

Critics acknowledge the success the New Museum in New York has achieved. But they say it has come at the expense of many people who work there.

Considered one of the finest small museums in America, the New Museum is routinely acclaimed for its exhibitions of contemporary art under the stewardship of its longtime director, Lisa Phillips.

At the helm for 21 years, Ms. Phillips has earned the admiration of her peers by growing the institution from a scrappy operation into an influential cultural force with increased attendance, exhibition space, staff, budget and visibility.

But there is another side to the New Museum described by former and current staff members who complain of unhealthy work conditions, low pay, low morale and incidents in which they say they were asked by museum leaders to act unethically.

A former finance director says Ms. Phillips told her to mislead the museums board about a cash shortfall. Art handlers say they were forced to work overnight at times to meet onerous deadlines. A former exhibitions director says that when the museum could not locate a work of art, its top officials suggested just making a copy, without telling the artist.

The best analogy I can come up with, said Derya Kovey, a former registrar at the museum, is a sweatshop.

Many former employees say they would have been happy to build careers there, had the conditions been different.

Zachary Small contributed reporting.

After the long-awaited reveal last November of Hong Kongs M+ museum, comes the neighbouring Palace Museum, devoted to Chinas imperial treasures on loan from the Forbidden City in Beijing. The museum was announced by the Hong Kong government in December 2016, sparking controversy over the lack of prior public consultation. It is a late addition to the West Kowloon Cultural District, which stretches over 40 hectares of reclaimed land beside Victoria Harbour. The HK$3.5bn capital project is fully funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Designed by the Hong Kong-based architect Rocco Yim, the building will have nine galleries spanning 7,800 sq. m, as well as a 400-seat theatre, educational spaces and nursery rooms. Around 800 artefacts from the Palace Museum in Beijing will make up the inaugural displays, including paintings, calligraphy, decorative arts objects and rare books. Other galleries will focus on the history of art collecting in Hong Kong and interactive experiences for children. In the first of a series of international partnerships, an exhibition on horses will juxtapose ancient Chinese art with works from the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

Exhibitions And The Triennial

The Museum presents the work of under-recognized artists, and has mounted ambitious surveys of important figures such as Ana Mendieta, William Kentridge, David Wojnarowicz, Paul McCarthy and Andrea Zittel before they received widespread public recognition. In 2003, the New Museum presented the highly regarded exhibition Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Continuing its focus of exhibiting emerging international artists, the museum organized the much discussed and visited exhibition, The Generational: “Younger Than Jesus” curated by Massimiliano Gioni, in 2009 which went on the become the first edition of its now signature exhibition series the “New Museum Triennial”. Subsequently, the museum held the second and third editions of its Triennial, respectively “The Ungovernables” and the much lauded “Surround Audience” .

Promoted twice since joining the New Museum in 2011, Margot Norton has organized exhibitions including one by Turner Prize-winner Laure Prouvost and the museum solo of Judith Bernstein.

The museum has announced a summer show, scheduled to open on July 20, 2016, called “The Keeper”. With over 4,000 objects from more than two dozen collectors, it presents object lessons about the process of collecting.

New Museum Of Contemporary Art New York

Museum of Contemporary Art

Ever since 1977, when Marcia Tucker founded the New Museum of Contemporary Art in a nondescript office space, Manhattan’s sole contemporary art museum has had a reputation for presenting edgy work. In December 2007, when the New Museum opened its new location on the Bowery , the structure itself reflected those sharp edges.

Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the Tokyo firm SANAA designed the seven above-ground floors as a stack of displaced boxes, each one shifted off-centre from the level immediately below or above. The boxes don’t step back in a consistent Empire State Building sort of way but rather in an irregular sculptural fashion.

New Museum was named as one of the seven wonders by Conde Nast Traveller in 2008.

New Museum of Contemporary Art design

The design decision served partly as a response to a tight zoning envelope. The site measures 71ft across and 112ft deep, and by shifting the boxes to the north, east, south, and west of the building’s central axis, SANAA could fill more space without always extending the structure to the perimeter.

The displacement also allows for skylights on every floor. Delicate, adjustable screens prevent the sunlight from bleaching the art or creating glare. These skylights create a far different atmosphere from the monolithic, dark, and airless environments of many museums. SANAA has said, “We believe buildings should be open and communicative, not bastions.”

Street Views of the New Museum at 235 Bowery

The New Museum building is intended as a home for contemporary art and an incubator for new ideas, as well as an architectural contribution to New Yorks urban landscape. Sejima and Nishizawa, who received the commission in 2002, have described the building as their response to the history and powerful personalities of both the New Museum and its storied site. The Bowery was very gritty when we first visited it, they have said. We were a bit shocked, but we were also impressed that a fine art museum wanted to be there. In the end, the Bowery and the New Museum have a lot in common. Both have a history of being very accepting, open, embracing of every idiosyncrasy in an unprejudiced manner. When we learned about the history of the New Museum we were flabbergasted by its attitude, which is very political, very focused on new ideas, fearless. The New Museum is a combination of elegant and urban. We were determined to make a building that felt like that. Amidst a cluster of relatively small and mid-sized buildings of varying types and uses, the New Museum rises 175 feet above street level. As visitors approach on the Bowery or from the west along Prince Street, they encounter the building as a dramatic stack of seven rectangular boxes.
