Airplanes And Submarines At Intrepid
There are 27 old airplanes, including the fastest military airplane and a spy plane. The British Airways Concorde is also on display at the Intrepid, this is the fastest commercial airplane in the world. You can also take a look at the submarine . Note that there is often a queue, so keep that in mind.
Not only can you make use of the audio tour, but guides are ready and willing to tell you more about the history of the USS Intrepid. You can, for example, see the bridge and learn more about how the crew and equipment used to work during wars. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is very accessible to children. The Uss Intrepid Experience
Looking almost battle-ready in New York harbor, the USS Intrepid calls out to grown-up kids who love getting close to big machines. As well as touring the crew quarters and the mechanical innards of the aircraft carrier, including the elevator that delivers fighter planes from the bowels of the ship to its floating runway, you can wander around the vast flight deck, dotted with an eclectic collection of flying machines.
For most people, the pick of the planes is Concorde this particular aircraft flew for British Airways before retiring in 2003. Also worthy of note are the deeply weird Grumman E1B Tracer, and the Lockheed A-12 surveillance plane, almost certainly the sexiest aircraft ever created. Other highlights for aircraft spotters include fighters, bombers and helicopters, including a distinctive Vietnam War-era Huey.
The space part arrives in the form of the Enterprise, NASAs first space shuttle orbiter from the 1970s. Its housed in the hangar-sized Space Shuttle Pavilion and displays inside recreate the life of an astronaut in space. The museum is also home to the guided-missile submarine Growler, whose cramped spaces offer a taste of the claustrophobic life of a submarine crew.

How Long Does It Take To Visit The Intrepid Sea Air And Space Museum
The Museum does not take particularly long to visit. After all, there are probably less than 100 Exhibits! Its just some of them are the Size of Aircraft Carriersliterally. So after getting a good look at each plane there is little to do but grab a selfie and move on. Honestly, we think we spend the most time there waiting for people to clear out of the frame so we can get good photos!
You can get a good in-depth visit to the Museum in a couple of hours. There is no need to commit a half-day to the Museum. Its a great stop-off when using the Big Bus Tour on your way back to mid-town after visiting the Downtown Area.

This floating museum offers an interactive exploration of U.S. military history aboard a 900-foot-long aircraft carrier docked along the Hudson River. The massive USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, which sustained five kamikaze attacks in World War II, is now a National Historic Landmark and home to hands-on exhibits, multimedia displays, a space shuttle, spy plane, strategic missile submarine and more all divided among four different decks accessible via elevators or stairs.
History
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, now a National Historic Landmark, which served tours of duty in World War II and the Vietnam War, and was a recovery vessel for the Gemini and Mercury space missions.
On August 8, 1988, this museum was awarded the USS Growler, a Grayback-class submarine, which carries the nuclear Regulus missile, by the United States Congress from the United States Navy. This ship is still on display at this museum .
The USS Edson, a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer was displayed as an exhibit that this museum from 1989 until 2004. This ship was returned to the Navy, and is now on display at the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum in Bay City, Michigan.

West Side Highway Replacement Project
Following the end of the Westway project, there were debates on what to do about the rest of the highway. was contracted for the highway replacement project in September 1986. There were four alternatives: three at-grade options with a varying number of lanes and quality of roadway, and one option with grade-separated ramps over busy intersections. By November, a commission was set up to discuss the alternatives. Four days later, several sections of the highway were agreed on. It would be an elevated highway north of 49th Street an at-grade roadway between 44th and 25th Streets, including a depressed northbound roadway from 32nd to 42nd Streets a tunnel under a park between 20th and 25th Streets an at-grade boulevard between 20th and Houston Streets an at-grade road with a 3-lane elevated ramp between Houston and Harrison Streets and a 9-lane boulevard with depressed ramps through Battery Park City. There would be 26 traffic lights. This proposal was assailed by mass-transit associations, environmental groups, and elected officials.
Construction began in early 1996 on the West Side Highway project. The first of the project’s seven segmentsbetween Clarkson and Horatio streets in the neighborhoodwas completed in 1998.

This is really a two-part question, for a large number of people, those with an interest in military history, the Intrepid is a wonderland. It s filled with incredible iconic Aircraft that will literally have you jumping up and down with excitement to see. This is me, I absolutely adore the Intrepid and if your interests align with mine, just head straight to the booking section below!
However, not everyone shares these interests. They have no real idea what a Blackbird is , The Space shuttle is all very impressive but they dont really need to look at a retired one and while they are obviously aware of the sacrifices of the war generation and eternally grateful, the miniature of the history is not that interesting. If this is you Will you still enjoy the Intrepid?
The answer is probably not, at least not as much as something else in New York. You should easily be able to tell your likely enthusiasm for the Museum by reading our What to See at the Intrepid section below. If the different exhibits excite you, as they do me, then you will love the Museum. If you are a bit, EhI dont really know what all this means, then it might be a pass!
Its also a great treat for kids, who largely love the Intrepid! Its great too to drag than round something boring with the offer of this as a reward.

Is The The Intrepid Sea Air And Space Museum Worth It
The Intrepid Museum offers a huge selection of really important and interesting exhibits. The Ship is incredible in itself and some of the Planes aboard are examples of childhood dreams. The inclusion of the Shuttle, Concorde, and the Growler as Extras adds huge amounts to the Value of the Museum.
Even people less interested in Military history will still enjoy the experience. Exploring a giant Aircraft Carrier is not something many people get to experience and even the views from the flight decks are almost worth the entry feealmost.
Our only reservation is how much this ranks as a great New York Attraction. As we mentioned above it took a few visits to New York before we made it to the Museum simply as there were too many must-see things to get to before the Museum. While this is one of our favorite things to visit in the City we are lucky that we have seen and done almost every attraction, most several times, so we are not in the position of sacrificing something else to visit the Intrepid. It is hard to justify recommending missing out on one of New Yorkss most Iconic Attractions to see the Museum, which is larger unrelated to the City.

Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum Of New York
Based in New York City, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an American and maritime history museum. It houses a collection of museum ships. The museum includes and displays the aircraft USS Intrepid, a Concorde SST, the cruise missile submarine USS Growler and a Lockheed A-12 supersonic reconnaissance plane along with many others. The museum was founded in 1982 and was closed in 2006 for a 1.5-year renovation. It was reopened on November 8, 2008, and continues to serve the public till today.
History Of The Intrepid
The Intrepid had a long and illustrious career, starting in World War II. The Ship was the third Essex Class Carrier off the production line and was immediately sent into Battle. The Ship had a distinguished campaign against the Japanese but did not come away without some serious war wounds.
For her opening skirmishes, she joined the Marines in the Island hopping campaigns ousting the Japanese from the various islands in the Indo-Pacific, with notable success. It was her she was hit by a torpedo bomber and had to retire for repairs before heading to the Philippines for continued service.
It was here the Vessel earned her medals. Assisting in the Battle of Leyte before playing a starring role in the naval battle of the Sibuyan Sea. Here she sunk several vessels in including the Battleship Musashi and the Carrier Zuih while inflicting damage on several others including the Pacific Flagship Yamato! Eventually, Intrepid was taken out of action again by a series of raids including Kamakaze Strikes, but she survived and was repaired once again in San Francisco.
After returning to the Frey to assist in the Battle for Okinawa, the ship was again badly damaged from Kamikaze and headed home for repairs. This time her return was too late as she arrived back in the Pacific the Japanese surrendered bringing the war to a close.
The Ship really is a piece of US Military History and exploring the Decks really is an honor and a fantastic privilege.
