C Fred Edwards Conservatory
The C. Fred Edwards Conservatory was opened in 1996 and was the gift of local philanthropist, Joan C. Edwards. It is the only tropical and subtropical plant conservatory in West Virginia and the tri-state region. In addition to plants, the conservatory features many animals, including koi , poison dart frogs, axolotls and a saltwater aquarium featuring various types of corals and other aquatic animals. The plants featured in the conservatory fall under four primary categories: Orchids, Agriculturally Important, Fragrant, and Unusual.
- Orchids â The orchid collection includes dozens of varieties from around the world.
- Agriculturally Important â The plants classified as agriculturally important are ones that are eaten or used in some way. Examples are banana, cashew, chocolate, coffee, pineapple, pomegranate, sugar cane, and vanilla.
- Fragrant â Fragrant plants are those that give off characteristically strong aromas, such as the cadaver plant.
- Unusual â The collection of unusual plants refers to plants that are not commonly known to us in our daily lives such as the pitcher plant, the turtle plant, and the sensitive plant.
Intro To Printmaking: Screen Printing

This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the art and history of Screen Printing. You will learn how to create your design, prepare your screen, and print with water-based inks on paper, fabric, or other surfaces if you so choose. In this workshop, you will learn a low-cost and low-tech method to produce high-quality hand-drawn prints that you can use beyond this workshop in the comfort of your own home. All skill levels are welcome to register for this class. All materials are provided.
Inuit Art And Sculpture
The small collection of Inuit art was assembled in the early 1950s by firearms collector Herman Dean during expeditions to the upper Hudson Bay region of Canada. Dean would personally meet with dealers that represented the artists during these trips and formed a holding that largely consists of figural sculptures. An important collection of documentary photographs of these trips is held in the Dean Papers at the Huntington Museum of Art.

One Hundred Badass Women To Open At The Huntington Museum Of Art
A new art exhibit entitled One Hundred Badass Women will debut at the Huntington Museum of Art on November 5, 2022 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The series, which took months to create, comes from local artist Sassa Wilkes.
John Farley, Senior Curator for the HMOA wrote:
The passing of beloved Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on September 18, 2020, was felt by many as the symbolic climax in a year defined by tumult and tragedy. Justice Ginsburg, champion of gender equity and architect of the legal fight for womens rights, was revered as a cultural and feminist icon. The effects of her death, after serving nearly three consequential decades on the Supreme Court, continue to compound in the lives of everyday Americans.
To honor her lifes work and process the immense loss of such a historic figure, artist Sassa Wilkes determined to paint a portrait of Justice Ginsburg. They worked all night, and, by the morning of September 22, Justice Ginsburgs characteristic features emerged from an energetic swirl of color, keen eyes glinting behind her trademark glasses. Justice Ginsburgs distinctive lace collar, represented with gold and silver leaf applied to the canvas, shone out against her black judicial robes. Wilkes realized that there were 100 days left in 2020 and vowed to complete an oil portrait of an inspiring woman each day for the remainder of the year.

Teach Them To Dream: The Art & Influence Of Stan Sporny
Teach Them to Dream: The Art & Influence of Stan Sporny will be on view at the Huntington Museum of Art from Sept. 10 through Dec. 30, 2022. A free opening reception for this exhibit takes place on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at HMA.
Stan Sporny was an accomplished professional artist and an inspiring Marshall University professor, passionately dedicated to helping his students achieve success. He aimed to revolutionize oil painting with his brand of non-toxic solvents and mediums: The Sporny Solution.
Stan Sporny was always exploring and discovering, teaching and challenging, said John Farley, HMA Senior Curator / Exhibition Designer and one of Spornys former students. Classroom discussions ranged from color saturation to Sri Lankan politics, formalism to Foghorn Leghorn. While his students quietly painted, he played the blues on his guitar and shared stories of New Orleans. At the end of the semester, he was known to bring a pot of homemade jambalaya to class.

The Touma Near Eastern Collection
Largely consisting of works donated to the museum by Drs. Omayma and Joseph B. Touma, the Touma Near Eastern Collection contains more than 400 works of art that include ceramics, glass, paintings, scientific instruments, and weaponry. The collection is housed in the Touma Near Eastern Gallery which was completed in 1996. In addition to the gifts made by the Touma family, the collection also includes an important holding of late 18th to late 19th century prayer rugs collected by Herbert Fitzpatrick, the Toumas, and others.

The Visual Elementsline Presented By Edward Tucker Architects Inc
The Huntington Museum of Art will launch a two-year series of exhibits titled The Visual Elements, with each exhibit focusing on a different building block of art. The first exhibit in the series titled The Visual Elements LinePresented by Edward Tucker Architects, Inc. will run from Aug. 13 through Nov. 6, 2022.
This series of six interrelated exhibits begins with one of the simplest and most versatile elements in any artists toolbox: line. A line is a literal or implied connection between points or, as poetically defined by artist Suzanne Caporael, a point moving through space, trailing its history behind.
Drawing inspiration from the vision of famed architect Walter Gropius, The Visual Elements will cultivate creativity and a greater understanding of artistic expression with a six-part series of exhibits that explores the foundational building blocks of artmaking. Using the museums permanent collection, each exhibit will emphasize, thematically, a certain shared aspect of the art on display. Yet artworks are, most often, orchestrated arrangements of multiple visual elements, composed together in the service of constructing an image. Each installment in this series will also illustrate ways in which the visual elements build upon one another.

Pow Comic Drawings From The Permanent Collection
Illustrated storytelling is a primal form of human communication, believed integral to the development of language. In this sense, the visual and narrative styles beloved in contemporary culture as comic art are simply modern expressions of a collective impulse buried deep in our prehistoric past.
Once primarily an American art form, comic books and the pantheon of characters spawned within their pages now connect legions of devoted fans around the world through a common language. Comic sales have risen consistently for decades, and consumer demand continues to reach astonishing heights, a trend supercharged by the popularity of graphic novels and digital downloads. Free Comic Book Day an annual promotional effort supported by participating comic book vendors has spread to nearly sixty different countries. An undeniable pop-culture juggernaut, scores of commercially successful comic-inspired movies dominate at the box office, and critically acclaimed TV series stream directly into our living rooms. The original artwork for newspaper comic strips and comic books is coveted by collectors and exhibited by major museums.
No longer a niche hobby, comic culture is decidedly mainstream.

Huntington Museum Of Art System
The Huntington Museum of Art is the largest art museum in West Virginia. While this museum is sympathetic enough to the artistic qualities of canines that it once hosted “Fine Arf,” an exhibit of dog-themed paintings from the 16th through the 20th centuries, dogs are not allowed inside. However, they are welcome on the trail system that winds through the forested forty acres on the museum’s property. You can complete the full loop in under an hour.
To begin your hike, take the Teubert Foundation Sensory Trail that begins at the butterfly garden next to the museum parking lot. It connects to the Tulip Tree Trail, which you should follow for most of its length. As you continue, take the short Spice Bush Trail loop, return to the Tulip Tree Trail, and continue until you reach the Gentle Oak Trail. The Gentle Oak Trail will take you back to a connection point on the Tulip Tree Trail you can take back to the Sensory Trail and the parking lot.
Whether you use the Huntington Museum Trail System for a quick hike break or part of a longer day of exploring, you’re sure to be delighted by the whimsy and magic of this unique place.

The Huntington Museum of Art will conduct its 7th Annual Fine Art Auction fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at 2 p.m. as an online and in-person event. The works are available for viewing now on the Invaluable website at
An in-person preview of the auction items takes place at HMA on Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The museum is proud to be partnering with Garths Auctioneers & Appraisers of Columbus, Ohio, for this event. The works included in the sale were consigned by generous members and supporters of the Museum. We are offering more than 180 lots in this years Fine Art Auction, including paintings, prints, glass, and ceramics, said HMA Executive Director Geoffrey K. Fleming. Some lots start as low as $25. You can purchase a work of art online or in-person and support HMA at the same time.
One of the highlights of this years auction is a beautiful figurative work by the noted Ohio artist, Dixie Selden . Selden, who was a native of Cincinnati, was an exceptionally well-travelled painter who studied with two of Americas most esteemed painters, Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. Selden was known for her landscapes, seascapes and portraits of Cincinnati notables. Her portrait of Frank Duveneck is part of the permanent collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
The Wilbur Myers Glass Collection
Local collector Wilbur Myers had a penchant for acquiring and collecting glass objects made primarily during the Victorian era . Among the hundreds of vases, ewers, bowls, cups and other decorative glass objects are pieces that feature elaborate enameling and other decoration. Two of the pieces on display are a pair of rare Morgan vases, which were featured on Antiques Roadshow in 2015.

The Huntington Museum of Art is a nationally accredited art museum located in the Park Hills neighborhood above Ritter Park in Huntington, West Virginia. Housed on over 50 acres of land and occupying almost 60,000 square feet, it is the largest art museum in the state of West Virginia. The museum’s campus is home to nature trails and the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory, a subtropical and tropical plant conservatory. The museum’s collection includes American and European paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, as well as glass pieces manufactured in West Virginia and the Ohio Valley, American folk art, Chinese and Japanese decorative objects, Haitian art, firearms, and decorative arts from the Near East. Serendipitous: A History Of Clay At The Huntington Museum Of Art
Ceramic artist and teacher Kathleen Kneafsey has served as Artist-in-Residence at the Huntington Museum of Art for the past 22 years. In addition to teaching various clay classes and maintaining the ceramics studio, she is responsible for inviting world-class clay artists to Huntington, West Virginia, through the Museums renowned Walter Gropius Master Artist Program.
This engagement includes an exhibit of the artists work, a public lecture, and an intensive multi-day workshop conducted in the Museums art studios designed by famed architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.
Assembled from Kneafseys wildest imagination, the roster of ceramic artists who have visited the Museum includes both early vanguards of the studio pottery movement and next generation artists redefining what it means to work with clay. For more than two decades, Kneafseys efforts have earned this program national prominence.
Kathleen Kneafseys lifelong commitment to ceramics education quietly underlies Serendipitous: A History of Clay at the Huntington Museum of Art. This sprawling exhibit, built from the Museums permanent collection, features contemporary ceramic artworks made by visiting artists in the Walter Gropius Master Artist Program. Brief recollections by Kneafsey, extruded from memory, accompany select artworks and enrich the gallery presentation. This is our history, and her story.

The Herman P Dean Firearms Collection
Herman Dean’s collection of firearms includes a wide variety of historical objects from the earliest designed hand cannon up to weapons of the mid-19th century, with special focuses on the development of firing mechanisms and weapons of the American frontier, including the Kentucky Rifle. The collection of 212 firearms is the third largest display on permanent exhibition in the United States.
What We Aim To Solve
HMA is the only nationally accredited visual art museum of its size in the Tri-State region of southwestern West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, and eastern Kentucky. Located in the Huntington-Ashland-Ironton Metro Area, Huntington Museum of Art serves an economically disadvantaged resident population, many of whom have limited access to educational and cultural opportunities. HMAs Museum Making Connections initiative, is the only visual arts education program of its size and scope in the area, providing free and low-cost art-making educational opportunities to children, teens, families, and area agencies. Without HMA, the majority of the individuals and organizations we serve would be unaware of, or unable to access and/or afford, comparable arts opportunities. While our mission statement has been revised as our institution has evolved, we still strive to represent the motto that graced the cover of our 1948 prospectus: To Enrich the Lives of All the People.

The George L Bagby Collection Of British Portraits
Prominent Lexington, Kentucky composer and musician, George Littlejohn Bagby , donated an important group of paintings created by some of the leading portrait artists active in 18th century Great Britain. The noted British artists William Beechey, Henry Raeburn, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and George Romney were kept constantly busy with commissions from wealthy patrons across the British isles. Among the subjects featured in the collection of the museum are Miss Arabella Margaretta Phipps, Miss Catherine Angelo, Colonel Sir James Malcolm, and Col. William Congalton-Bethune.
Evening Oil Painting For All Skill Levels

This class is open for all skill levels, using oil paint. This class is scheduled in the evenings for the busy professional or stay-at-home parent who needs an evening to be creative. The Walter Gropius Master Artist Program
The Walter Gropius Master Artist Program is the primary visiting artist program at the Huntington Museum of Art. The first artist to teach in the program was the painter Robert Cottingham in 1992. The program was initially funded from the Estate of Roxanna Y. Booth, who was interested in the development of an art education program based upon the teachings of Walter Gropius. Booth’s late son, Alex Booth, contributed to its development. Depending on the year, the museum has hosted between three and six artists. As part of each Master Artist’s visit, the museum presents an exhibition of their work, a lecture regarding their creative process , and a hands-on workshop in the museum’s free-standing studios.
