Our father spent his life dedicated to the art and the practice of painting. Its hard to think of dad without a paint brush in his hand, or standing in front of his easel, or without his camera walking down the street looking for new subject matter. But he was also a loving father, a beloved man about town, an avid reader, and clipper of the news , a veteran gardener, a music lover, and a voracious traveler. He truly lived a full life, enjoying the world around him and the people he met, and his art reflected that.
For every hour he spent in front of the easel he spent many more walking the streets of Portland, New York City, Pittsburgh, Santa Fe, and so many small industrial towns around the country that fascinated him. His subjects were the places people worked and lived, the streets they walked, and the factories and plants that were the backbone of these cities. He also had great respect for the nature that surrounded those buildings and structures capturing the sky, trees, and water with a softness that stands in contrast to the solidness and detail of the human structures.
Having a parent as an artist means you have someone who can show you the beauty and wonder of the world around you every day. We hope the paintings on display here, in the town he called home for so long, convey some of those feelings to you.

Reclaimed commemorates a remarkable story of post-Holocaust restitution and the extraordinary life and legacy of Jacques Goudstikker , a preeminent art dealer in Amsterdam. Goudstikkers vast collection of Old Master paintings was almost lost forever to the Nazi practice of looting cultural properties. Explore the richness of this collection while learning about the plundering of the works and the efforts by Goudstikkers family that led to the successful recovery of over 200 of the looted works.
Golem: A Call To Action
GOLEM: A Call to Action is an exhibition in three parts by Los Angelesbased artist Julie Weitz, comprising three video artworksGolem v. Golem, My Golem as a Wildland Firefighter, and Prayer for Burnt Foreststhat draw on Jewish allegory, folklore, and spiritual practice to confront societal and ecological disasters. The legend of the golem originates as far back as the Middle Ages, when Jewish mystics imagined the creation of a clay humanoid as a meditative technique for becoming closer to God. By the nineteenth century, popular Yiddish folktales characterized the golem as a helper, companion, or rescuer of an imperiled Jewish community. In this exhibition, Weitz revitalizes golem mythology to frame a moral imperative for action on the social and ecological issues we face today.

Jewish Museum This Spring
There are actually several Jewish Museums on Manhattan within striking distance of the Upper East Side Apartments for Rent, but only one holds the distinction of being called The Jewish Museum. Located on Fifth Avenue, part of New Yorks legendary Museum Mile, this institution is famed for its showcasing of Jewish culture and fine art:
Founded in 1904, the museum was the first institution of its kind in the United States and is one of the oldest Jewish museums in the world. Devoted to exploring art and Jewish culture from ancient to contemporary, the museum offers diverse exhibitions and programs, and maintains a unique collection of nearly 30,000 works of art.

What The Jewish Museum Is All About
As mentioned in the quote above, The Jewish Museum was established in 1904, with their collection being housed at the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Mayer Sulzberger donated the original collection of ceremonial art to the organization, at which time the idea to form the museum came about, and they set about in earnest to expand their cache of various works of art.

IN AMERICA IN the 1960s, the museum that showcased the latest and best contemporary art was located, predictably enough, in New York, but it wasnt the Guggenheim, the Whitney or the Museum of Modern Art. Instead, the epicenter of the shock of the new was the modestly endowed upstart that art-world insiders affectionately called the Jewish.
Solomon served as director for only two years, from July 1962 to July 1964. Despite the brevity of his career,he set the museum on its course. For his debut exhibition, in March 1963, he presented a Rauschenberg retrospective of paintings, transfer drawings and the three-dimensional combines that melded elements of both painting and sculpture. He followed with Toward a New Abstraction that summer, which provided an overview of hard-edge abstract painting and included the shaped canvases of Frank Stella and the monochromes of Ellsworth Kelly. His 1964 solo show of the 33-year-old Johns was even more magisterial than the Rauschenberg exhibition.

Contraption: Rediscovering California Jewish Artists
Contraption: Rediscovering California Jewish Artists is a group show that presents the work of sixteen California-identified artists of Jewish descentboth historical and livingwhose work refers to the machine either literally or metaphorically. Some of the artists are rarely seen now. Among the living artists, there will be large-scale mechanical installations by Bernie Lubell and Sheri Simons, as well as ceramics, drawings, sculpture and paintings by Ned Kahn, Bella Feldman, Howard Fried, and Annabeth Rosen. This original exhibition was co-curated by Chief Curator Renny Pritikin and Mark Dean Johnson, Professor of Art at SFSU.
Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition
Stanley Kubrick exerted complete artistic control over his projects in doing so, he reconceived the genres in which he worked. The exhibition covers the breadth of Kubricks achievements, beginning with his photographs for LOOK magazine taken in the 1940s, and continuing with his directorial achievements of the 1950s through the 1990s, and explores Napoleon and Aryan Papers, two projects that Kubrick never completed, and the technological advances developed by Kubrick and his team. This exhibition is organized by the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Christiane Kubrick and The Stanley Kubrick Archive at University of the Arts London.

Beyond Belief is an expansive exhibition exploring the spiritual dimensions of modern art, especially as seen through the lens of Jewish theological concepts. The exhibition features forty-eight internationally-known artists whose workpainting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation artare all drawn from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts outstanding collection. The Art Of Rube Goldberg

In That Case: Havruta In Contemporary Artdavid Wilson And Francesco Spagnolo
Inspired by the ambiguity of the Hebrew word found in Psalm 130, mimaamaqim, David Wilson and Francesco Spagnolo have been collaborating on a deep study of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley. Mimaamaqim, translated alternatively as from the depths or de profundis, is a concept that evokes deep valleys, dark places, and mysteries. For several months, David worked in the deep storage of the Magnes, finding, researching, looking at, and drawing objects from the four corners of the world. Each drawing session culminated in a conversation with Francesco, who expanded on and played with the origins and meanings of the objects he portrayed. This installation is the result of their collaboration. Artifacts, drawings, and annotations open a window into the process of bringing out the life of an object, unleashing its performative powers. The conversation is by all means not over.

1. MK Guth: Be Part of It! at Cristin Tierney Gallery, New York
MK Guth will be in residence at Cristin Tierney Gallery for the first two weeks of her new exhibition, Be Part of It! . It will be the artists latest hair-braiding performance, in which visitors are invited to weave silver satin ribbons inscribed with their names into the artists hair. Past works have been staged at San Franciscos Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Whitney Biennial in New York, and Cosmopolitans P3 Studio in Las Vegas, where Guths braids each ended up more than 300 feet long, weighing hundreds of pounds. This time around, Guth will cut the braids on Saturday, July 23, and spend the second week of the residency sewing them into sculptures.

Roz Chast: Cartoon Memoirs
The CJM is pleased to present the only appearance of Roz Chasts Cartoon Memoirs retrospective exhibition outside of New York and Massachusetts. Chast is one of the most celebrated and beloved cartoonists working in the United States today she has been publishing with The New Yorker since 1978. Her 2014 graphic memoir Cant We Talk About Something More Pleasant? deals with the difficult subject of caring for aging parents.

Louise Bourgeois: Freuds Daughter

The late French-American artist Louise Bourgeoisbest-known for her sky-high sculptures of spiders, which she said combined psychological and biographical referencesfamously called her art her guarantee of sanity. This exhibition explores the artists engagement with Freudian psychoanalysis, comprising a vast selection of the psychoanalytic writings she began in the late 1940s after a period of psychological ailments. The writings profoundly recalibrate our understanding of her artistic trajectory and motivational impulses, says the curator, Philip Larratt-Smith, and highlight the centrality of her Oedipal deadlock as the traumatic kernel of her psychic organisation. Works like The Destruction of the Father are open to multiple readings but can be seen to evoke the Oedipus complex, according to Larratt-Smith. Grief And Grievance: Art And Mourning In America
Until 6 June at the New Museum, 235 Bowery, Manhattan
The New Museum will offer free admission to the closing weekend of this acclaimed exhibition, which fulfills a vision of the Nigerian-born curator and critic Okwui Enwezor. When Enwezor died in March 2019, the killing of George Floyd and the protests it ignited across the US were more than a year away. But the exhibition on which he was labouring in many ways anticipated those events by burrowing into the sorrow and devastation wrought by violence against Black Americans. The show unites works by 37 artists who have addressed the themes of mourning and loss in response to injustice experienced by Black communities. In his initial proposal for the exhibition, Enwezor wrote that the medias normalisation of white nationalism the last two years have made clear that there is a new urgency to assess the role that artists, through works of art, have played to illuminate the searing contours of the American body politic.
