The Shops consume an entire floor of the museum and contains a variety of stores and shops with glass from all areas of the world. How Much Time Do You Need At Cmog

If you go and Google how much time to spend at the Corning Museum of Glass, the most common answer is going to be 3-4 hours.

And I would agree that 3 hours is probably the absolute *minimum* amount of time you can spend here and still get a good overview of things. But tickets for CMoG are actually good for two consecutive days, which should tell you all you need to know about how much time you could conceivably spend within the Museum’s walls.

If you truly want to be able to browse each exhibit, watch a couple Hot Glass Demos, AND work on a glass project of your own, then you’re probably looking at at full day at the Corning Museum of Glass.

How Much Time Do You Need At The Corning Museum Of Glass

Corning Museum of Glass

To get the whole experience of The Corning Museum of Glass, I would plan on spending four hours at the museum. This timeframe will allow you to check out the exhibits, watch a glass blowing demonstration, do the Make Your Own Glass experience, grab lunch, and browse the shops.

If youre planning on spending a lot of time viewing the exhibits, you could spend quite frankly spend the entire day at the museum if you have the time. There is a great cafe and outdoor areas to break up your day.

However, if you are on a time crunch, the minimum amount of time I would suggest visiting is within a three-hour timeframe. Make sure to check out the blowing demonstration and stroll through the exhibits. However, you most likely wont have time to Make Your Own Glass in this amount of time.

History And Innovation: 35 Centuries Of Glass And Innovation Center

Have you ever thought about the history of glass? When was it discovered and who discovered it? Or innovations in glass over the years, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries?

If your answer is no youre in good company. I never thought about it either. Thats the great thing about the museum it gets you thinking about wonderful things, like how the heck beer bottles are made. Learning about it was so interesting and intriguing it made me contemplate glass bottles, glass windows, and glasss influence on the arts, overall.

We walked through the museums carefully crafted exhibits that tells the story of glass. It was thought provoking to see centuries-old artifacts on display. For instance, before humans realized they could blow glass to created air pockets inside pieces , for it to be created in mass centuries ago a core of some sort had to be put in it. The glass would be be formed around it, then hollowed out. This would allow the core to be scooped out after it was created, then the vessel would be a hollow center.

Youre taken through various civilizations through time to help tell this story, including: Roman, Islamic, Venetian, European and Asian.

It was here we learned that natural glass is green because of the iron in it. Or that if you add gold to clear glass it creates a pink or rose color. Just check out this pink Chihuly piece. The pink is actually a result of the addition of gold! Mind = blown.

Josh Simpsons 50 Years In Glass: A Journey To The Stars

Josh Simpson has spent 50 years creating some of the most intricate and vibrant works in the world of contemporary glass. He has developed his own distinctive style inspired equally by outer space and the natural world and is recognized for his innovative Megaplanet series, as well as his signature blue New Mexico Glass, Corona Glass, and much more.

To celebrate and honor his legacy, we have gathered quotes from several people who Josh has worked with and inspired throughout his impressive career.

Karol Wight, president and executive director, The Corning Museum of Glass:

When I arrived in Corning in 2011 to work at the Museum, one of the first pieces that caught my eye in the galleries was Josh Simpsons Megaplanet. Even though the work is rather cheekily displayed next to an array of paperweights, I recognized it for the piece of virtuoso sculpting it is, rather than assessing it as a 500 lb. paperweight. And when I learned that Josh was married to astronaut Cady Coleman, a deeper meaning behind the design of the sculpture was made clear. Im a science fiction fan, and by looking examining the miniature universe created within Megaplanet, as well as in many other globes made by Josh, my interest in space and the universe was sparked in a new way.

Meghan Bunnell, buyer, The Shops at The Corning Museum of Glass:

Josh Simpsons legacy is etched in the history of glass. As a creative force, he finds beauty and magic in everything he does.

Is Corning Museum Of Glass Worth It

Absolutely. Even if you have been in the past its worth going again. The Museum was updated and expanded to nearly double its size in 2015.

If you are an artistic person, whatsoever, in any regard, youll love it. If you simply have an admiration for the arts in any regard it will resonate with you. Appreciate history? It will mean something to you. Lover of a good show? They have that too. Want something hands-on? You got it.

I didnt expect glass to take such a front and center place on the proverbial stage here. Yes, it makes sense for it because, heck, its a museum centered around glass. But I figured, What can they possibly show me in glass that I havent seen? I mean, its just GLASS, right? Wrong.

Weve been twice now and they rotate some of the exhibits and works of art too.

How To Spend One Day At The Corning Museum Of Glass

Home » United States » New York » How to Spend One Day at the Corning Museum of Glass

When someone tells me that an attraction has something for everyone, I’m sometimes skeptical. Everyone? Really?

But in some instances, it’s just true! And I’m convinced that it’s true of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.

The Corning Museum of Glass is the largest museum dedicated to glass in the world. And while it has some art museum elements to it like you might expect, it’s not just an art museum at times it feels like a history museum and science museum, too, meaning that, yes, there kind of IS something for everyone here.

I first visited the Corning Museum of Glass back in 2017 as part of a short trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. My husband Elliot and I spent a few hours wandering through gallery exhibits, watching glass-making demonstrations, and even trying our hands at hot-glass working.

And as someone who often admits that she gets bored at conventional art museums, I was genuinely surprised that we spent nearly half a day at CMoG without even realizing it.

I guess that’s why tickets here are good for two consecutive days!

What Was Your Most Memorable Experience From This Season

The most memorable experience from this season was when Dan Friday gave me his glass bear adornment as a parting gift. A big HyShqe to Dan Friday for that! Trenton Quiocho

My most memorable experience was getting to meet such amazingly talented artists and work alongside them all in such a large and impressive hot shop. Although we were competing against each other, there was a real sense of camaraderie between all the contestants, for example when everyone clapped and cheered as John Morans impressive piece he had been working on for the whole hot shop session came off the iron and was being put in the annealer to cool. Madeleine Hughes

When we finished just under the wire, I was so stoked for everyone! We spent a lot of time together! Dan Friday

The entire 7 Deadly Sins challenge was a highlight for me. I took a risk and made some really experimental work that ended up sealing the deal with a win along with a residency to Pilchuck. In that interview, I also did an ASMR performance with a bag of chips. I havent seen the show yet so I am not sure if it made the cut, but it would be a shame for everyone involved if they didnt. Grace Whiteside

Team John was a lot of fun! Working with John Moran on the team challenge was definitely the most fun I had in the hot shop. John Sharvin

Finally seeing who else was going to be with me in the competition. When I saw some familiar faces, I was at first surprised and then really nervous! Claire Kelly

Exploring The Incredible Rockwell Museum In Corning New York

Jim CheneyDisclosure:

While Corning, New York is best known for the fabulous Corning Museum of Glass, the city is also home to another fantastic museum: The Rockwell Museum.

The Rockwell Museum is located in the Gaffer District of downtown Corning in what was once city hall. The museum, which has no connection to artist Norman Rockwell, features a collection of fantastic art from throughout the United States.

The museum actually got its start as the private collection of local business owners Bob and Hertha Rockwell. They would display their vast collections of American art, Steuben glass, and more in the Rockwell Department Store on Market Street.

As the collection grew, they worked with the Corning Glass Works to create a museum that both locals and visitors to Steuben County could enjoy, and, in 1976, the Rockwell Museum opened. After moving amongst several temporary locations in town, they finally settled in the old city hall in 1982.

Today, the Rockwell Museum features an amazing collection of American paintings, Native American art, and antique riffles inside the beautifully restored city hall building. It is also a Smithsonian affiliate, which offers a clue into how wonderful this museum is.

There are three inside the museum, with the third floor also having a great view of the city. Despite the space being relatively small, I was really impressed with the quality of the museum.

Its likely youll park in the free parking lot at the museum then walk through doors that lead to the gift shop. Theres an information desk upon entry in case you get confused.

But the main area, where ticket admission is, is actually on the second floor. To get there, you just walk through the gift shop to the escalators and go up a level. The second floor is also where most of the museum exhibits are.

Grab A Bite To Eat At The Cafe

The Corning Museum of Glass has a fantastic cafe offering a wide variety of food. The food options are especially great given how large the museum is and the extent of time you will spend here. It was great to break up my visit to the Corning Museum of Glass with a bit to eat for lunch.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. Given that I visited in the summer, I choose to eat outside to get some fresh air.
