Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project “aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa,” in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.

One suggestion was to try outside the Met Museum of Art or MOMA, does anyone one know if artists sell there in winter or is it just summer only? We will be there mid-December.

According to my favorite art satirist George Moran, he appears on the sidewalk between 77th & 78th at 5th every day barring weather, parades or special events.

So I would say, yes, the artists are still there, but they may not be right in front of the place if the construction is still going on at the Met Museum & , if I remember correctly, there are still artists by

Cow_Buiscuits, we presume you understand that most of the material being sold outside the Met and MOMA is not original art, but mass-produced dreck. The U.S. Constitution makes it very difficult to regulate these vendors with local legislation and enforcement. I’m sure you’re helping to support someone’s hungry family, but you’re not always buying “art”.

Yes, we saw people selling prints both outside the Met on a day it was snowing and the Guggenheim on a day it was raining. As stated in post #3 though, they are not one offs, but mass produced stuff. Still did the job nicely though. You’ll also see a lot of people in Central Park selling them, especially in “The Mall’ section.

Met To Deaccession $1 Million Worth Of Prints And Photos To Make Ends Meet

New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art is to sell 219 prints and photographs to make up for a $150 million budget shortfall caused by the continuing Covid-19 crisis, according to Artnet News. Auction house Christies will handle the sale. The works, all duplicates of those in the Mets collection, will be made available in three tranches beginning September 24, when a raft of Civil War photographs hit the block. The sale is expected to generate roughly $900,000 to $1.4 million and includes works by Robert Frank, Roy Lichtenstein, and Frank Stella. The museum confirmed that private dealer Tobias Meyer, a former star auctioneer at Sothebys, is advising the institution on the sale.

Among those who dont support the Mets eager adherence to the temporary deaccessioning rules are the institutions former director Thomas Campbell, who in March penned a scathing op-ed on the topic. Met director Max Hollein at the time dismissed criticism of the practice, saying Its not as if crazy things are happening. Hollein noted that the Met typically deaccessions $10 million worth of works annually, and that the works being sold are almost always multiples, copies of better quality works the museum already possesses.

Baltimore Museum Of Art Calls Off Controversial Deaccession Plan Hours Before Sale

The museum is taking advantage of a pandemic-era policy change issued by the Association of Art Museum Directors that is set in place until April 2022. The adjustment allows museums to sell art from their holdings to raise funds for collection care, rather than just solely to pave the way for future acquisitions, as the pre-pandemic policy stipulated.

Other museum deaccessions prompted by the AAMDs temporary policy have drawn criticism. Last year, the Baltimore Museum of Art planned to sell works by Andy Warhol, Clyfford Still, and Brice Marden at Sothebys in New York. After a public outcry, the museum withdrew the works at the last minute. That museum had planned to use the money gained from the sale to diversify the its collection, rather than to balance its budget as a result of financial fallout from the pandemic. Also last year, the Brooklyn Museum of Art sold Old Masters works to raise funds for collection maintenance.

Although deaccessioning is a regular practice at museums, institutions typically do not part with works as major as ones sold as of late. The recent sale of works from institutions holdings spurred a tense debate both within and beyond the museum world. Opponents of the practice claim that museums are selling crucial pieces of art history, and possibly landing them in private hands. Proponents allege that doing so allows institutions to radically reshape their collections, possibly in ways that allow for greater diversity.

Christies announces it has been entrusted to sell a selection of photographs, prints and multiples from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. All of the works are duplicates of works within the Museums collection. The Met has shared it will use the sale proceeds to support care of its collection in accordance with its Collections Management Policy in line with the Association of Art Museum Directors policy that enables institutions to direct funds from deaccession sales toward collection care for a limited period of time in consideration of earned revenue losses resulting from the ongoing pandemic. Works spanning the history of photography will be offered beginning with a dedicated online sale of 168 lots of Civil War photography from 24 September7 October. Sixteen lots, including seven Robert Frank images from his seminal book The Americans, will be included in a dedicated section of the 6 October live Photographs auction. Prints and multiples will be featured in the online sale, A Graphic Century: 18751975 from 4-18 November.
