Extension And Preservation Project
In 2002, after a two-year master planning process, the museum’s board of trustees determined that a new wing was necessary to preserve the historic building and to provide improved spaces for programs that continue Isabella Gardner’s legacy. In 2004, Pritzker Prizewinning architect Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop were selected to design the new wing. In 2009, the final approval for the expansion project was given, but there was much debate about the carriage house. The carriage house, originally built in 1907, was argued to be important for the intent of the first owners, yet the building was torn down in hopes of having the museum preserve the main building. In 2016, the new wing was praised for its appearance by the Boston Society of Architects and awarded a medal for its beauty. The design for the new wing is conceived as a respectful complement to the historic Museum building in scale, form, and materials.
Gold From Simone Martini To Contemporary Art
Discover the allure and significance of one of the worlds most precious metals this fall at the Gardner. Metal of Honor: Gold from Simone Martini to Contemporary Art explores how four artists, of different times and different places, use gold as an artistic strategy for innovation and honor. Works by Simone Martini , whose novel compositions and masterful techniques were unequaled in Europe and well ahead of his time, are juxtaposed with works by three contemporary paintersTitus Kaphar , Stacy Lynn Waddell , and Kehinde Wiley . These artists reinterpret the style and medium of devotional imagery to explore the meaning of representation, commemoration, and adoration today.
The exhibition features stunning examples of Martinis skilled manipulation of gold and the sacred symbolism it evokes, including the Gardners five-panel altarpiece and its smaller painting, Virgin and Child with Saints. These pieces are the first two works by the artist in the United States, a testament to our founders pioneering tastes. A new film explores goldwork techniques used in Martinis time and today.

Many of the crucial events of the occurred in or near Boston. Boston’s penchant for mob action along with the colonists’ growing lack of faith in either or fostered a revolutionary spirit in the city. When the British parliament passed the in 1765, a Boston mob ravaged the homes of , the official tasked with enforcing the Act, and , then the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. The British sent two regiments to Boston in 1768 in an attempt to quell the angry colonists. This did not sit well with the colonists. In 1770, during the , British troops shot into a crowd that had started to violently harass them. The colonists compelled the British to withdraw their troops. The event was widely publicized and fueled a revolutionary movement in America.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is an art museum in Boston, Massachusetts, which houses significant examples of European, Asian, and American art. Its collection includes paintings, sculpture, tapestries, and decorative arts. It was founded by Isabella Stewart Gardner, whose will called for her art collection to be permanently exhibited “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever”.
An auxiliary wing, adjacent to the original structure near the Back Bay Fens, was completed in 2012.
In 1990, thirteen of the museum’s works were stolen the crime remains unsolved, and the works, valued at an estimated $500 million, have not been recovered. A $10 million reward for information leading to the art’s recovery remains in place.

Climate Change And Sea Level Rise
The City of Boston has developed a climate action plan covering carbon reduction in buildings, transportation, and energy use. Mayor Thomas Menino commissioned the city’s first Climate Action Plan in 2007, with an update released in 2011. Since then, Mayor has built upon these plans with further updates released in 2014 and 2019. As a coastal city built largely on , is of major concern to the city government.
