The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is a hot destination for jewelry enthusiasts and buyers alike right now.

Its current exhibition, Jewelry: The Body Transformed, presents about 230 objects from the Bronze Age to present day, showcasing jewelry as an ornamental form of wearable art that can have profound effects on its wearers.

And while the museums shop has long offered costume and demi-fine versions of its jewelry treasures or designs based on the past, it has now expanded its range to include higher-end, handcrafted and responsibly sourced pieces created for the Met by Donna Distefano, a New York designer and goldsmith.

A new 16-piece collection, for example, includes 18-karat gold drop earrings with emerald stones, inspired by the Body Transformed exhibitions richly ornamented Crown of the Andes and priced at $3,200.

With prices exceeding $8,000, the creations reflect the continuing development of the museums jewelry retail division, which recently announced new sourcing and production standards for all its offerings.

The move to add higher-end jewelry could also have some impact on the Mets bottom line, especially as the museum has been working to reduce its financial deficit with such moves as charging admission to out-of-state visitors. The Mets budget for the 2018 fiscal year was $320 million $51 million was generated by retail.

Mr. Pedott declined to be specific, but said that sales of Ms. Distefanos pieces, which began last fall, had exceeded expectations.

The Met Store now carries about 450 jewelry items, including Ms. Distefanos work prices start at $35 for nylon cord bracelets with 18-karat gold-plated sterling silver charms. A 22-karat gold cross pendant studded with Colombian emeralds, another Distefano design inspired by the Crown of the Andes, is now the stores most expensive item at $8,100, though it is available only at the Fifth Avenue museum location. Other pieces, however, including an emerald tassel necklace , can be purchased online.

Ms. Distefanos collections, stamped Donna Distefano x The Met Store, began in November 2017 with three rings inspired by the Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman & Designer exhibition. Her first full 25-piece collection for the museum, including several beaded rosary necklaces in black onyx, arrived in May alongside the Costume Institutes Heavenly Bodies exhibition.

Jewels By Jar Opens At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

For fans of jewelry designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal or JAR, as he is known the exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art next week is big news. Its the first retrospective of JAR jewelry in the U.S. and the first major exhibition of his work since that famous 2002 show at Somerset House in London where flashlights were distributed at the door.

No torches this time. It seems the Met can afford proper lighting. There will, however, be JAR jewelry for sale, just as there was at the Somerset show.

JAR has created a jewelry collection to be sold exclusively at the Met for the run of the show, including eight pairs of earrings and two watches, priced at $2,000 to $7,500. The catalog for the exhibition is plenty satisfying and might be more in your price range.

As I wrote in my first profile of JAR, his jewelry is so rare and yet so recognizable, wearing it has become the ultimate status symbol for wealthy connoisseurs. A handful of celebrities made millions selling off their JAR jewels at auction, including actress Ellen Barkin in 2006 and socialite Lily Safra last year. Barkins sale created such a stir, it inspired a scene in Sex & the City: the Movie.

The poppy she refers to is the brooch of carved pink and green tourmalines JAR designed for Lily Safra in 1982, discussed in this post, its stem twisting around a pear-shape diamond. It sold for $1,273,320 at Christies Geneva on May 14, 2012 double the estimate, which is typical for JAR jewels at auction.

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Is Bringing Collectible Indian And Arab Designs To Its Gift Shop

Ever since Christies blockbuster sale of the Al Thani collection of Mughal jewelry in 2019, Indian-inflected gems have been a hot commodity. That auction, which included exceptional Golconda diamonds and all manner of bejeweled objects from the Indian royal court, became the second highest-grossing sale of a private jewelry collection and thrust the artistry of Eastern jewelry design into the spotlight. Now, to commemorate 10 years of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts reimagined Islamic galleries, the museums store is offering designs from some of Indias leading contemporary jewelers as well as a trove of collectible antiques.

Doubling down on its commitment to Islamic art, the museum tapped celebrated designer and textile connoisseur Madeline Weinrib to curate a selection of modern-day craftspeople from throughout the Islamic world. Weinrib, whos best known for her bygone carpet store and for reinvigorating Marrakechs luxurious El Fenn, has gathered a diverse range of makers who are carrying on the centuries-old artistry displayed in the Mets collection.

Particularly collectible, Ispahani Bartos says, are works with Indian meenakari enamel work, like a particularly stunning table-cut diamond bracelet in her collection, and the spectacular interactions between Western jewelers such as Cartier and the great Muslim nawabs and maharajas of Indian.
