    Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project “aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa,” in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.

    The Fantastic Jewelry Exhibition

Some quick research online revealed that the museum was hosting an astounding jewelry exhibition, spanning across 5 galleries, till February 24, 2018. So, rather than just moving around in circles, I decided to visit this exhibition, which had been garnering so much hype in the city.

As I entered the first gallery, a marvelous sight greeted my eyes, almost straight out of a movie! Right before me stood a Turkish styled veil , studded with Swarovski crystals. I thought to myself, Is this jewelry or armor?

This particular piece of art, created by Shaun Leane, for an Alexander McQueen show, in 1999, drew similar responses from curators from all over the world. As a result, it became a part of this exhibition, which aims to find the fundamental definition of jewelry, according to The New York Times. Is jewelry simply for adornment and pleasure or is it an expression of us and our culture? The question certainly provides food for thought. Holding on to those thoughts, I promised I would visit the museum again on my next visit to New York City.

Arts Of Africa Oceania And The Americas

This area covers an extensive history of tribal cultures from around the world. Visitors can view ancient artifacts like masks, ritual accessories, and a significant amount of textile work. With over 11,000 pieces, you’ll get a better idea of the culture of ancient South America, sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, Nigeria, and more.

European Sculpture And Decorative Arts & Medieval Arts

For our first stop, we are going to be looking at two exhibits at the same time! As we walk inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in the center wing is the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and also the Medieval Arts. Both exhibits are insanely close together and the art is from the same region so lets knock out two birds with one stone.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of Medieval art in the entire world. You can find a variety of artifacts in this exhibit. There are plates, statues, carpets, paintings, and much more.

We start by looking at these ancient artifacts along the walls behind a glass window. These pieces that are shown are from the 4th to the 16th century books, stones, pictures, bowls, vases, etc.

Typically Medieval artifacts are not usually vibrant colors, just mostly dull The dull lighting in the exhibit, arched entryways, and a giant choir screen definitely gives the Medieval kind of vibe.

Look at this giant carpet that is hanging along the wall. It gives it that Medieval attraction with the designs and the coloring. Also, many of the sculptures along the walls are very detailed. Most of the small figurines are protected transparent glass to prevent any damage.

Now, lets go check out the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts exhibit! The lighting seems to be a bit brighter over here but the light is reflecting more towards the objects in the exhibit.
